I ordered “The Star and the Blackness Between them” yesterday because of your recommendations. Again just wanted to tell you how much light your videos brings me❤️
The Parable duology was such an incredible journey in many different ways. Two books as recs are: 'The Summer We Got Free' by Mia McKenzie and 'Jam on the Vine' by LaShonda Katrice Barnett. They are two of the best books I've ever read and have very strong LGBT representation. 'The Summer We Got Free' is about a black family living within a community that is against them, especially the local black pastor. One day a young black lady turns up on their doorstep and her arrival shakes up the household and from there we get to know the family, and why they are such outcasts. 'Jam on the Vine' is about the first ever women-run newspaper in the US. Ivoe is the main protagonist and you see her journey from a very tough childhood, thru her schooling and on to her journey to get the newspaper up and running. Such a good, good story.
@@LEFTONREAD The other day I came across a book by chance. Now I haven't read it but it won the Lambda award for Best Debut Fiction in 2015, yet only has 28 ratings and 16 reviews on goodreads. The Lambda's are the big awards for LGBTQI+ books and authors, so amazes me so little have read it. The book is 'A Love Like Blood' by Victor Yates.
So many amazing titles mentioned: The Stars And The Blackness Between Them has been on my radar so I need that ASAP. PET was amazing. Enjoyed it so much. It definitely did read like middle grade, but anyone can read it tbh.
HERE COMES THE SUN was one of the best recommendations I've ever gotten. Dennis-Benn's building of character in it is phenomenal. I hadn't gotten to PATSY yet, but after hearing you speak of it so highly, I'll definitely be moving it further up on my TBR!
Thank you for this video 😊 And yes the stars and blackness between them is so good , one of my fave reads of last year. Don't call us dead is one of the first poetry books i ever read and one of the best still. Can't wait to read Patsy , "here comes the sun" was amazing so i know patsy is gonna be great too.
Nice rec video! I really want to explore Jacqueline Woodson more. Red at the Bone sounds good. So does Patsy. And so many countless others. Thank you for the video
definitely wanting to read the stars and the blackness between them as soon as I can get it from the library!!! and im gonna get to a Danez Smith's poem collection this month for sure. an unkindness of ghosts is sooooo fucking good that book opened my mind to sci-fi as a genre. loved this video
Always watch but don't often comment ❤️Really need to read Alyssa Cole , I don't normally read romance but recently been craving something lighter xx One of my fave books is The Black Flamingo by Dean Atta ❤️🏳️🌈❤️I think that's relatively new out in the U.S ... I think XXX
You are keeping my favourite bookshop in business, Jourdan. :D Your recs are usually spot on for me, so I can't wait to read Pet. Also, I finally got around to picking up Friday Black (which you talked about a couple of times in the last months) after I stumbled upon it at the library. I started reading it right away and hoooo boy, it's seriously good!
Loved this video and I have purchased and read many of these works because of your recommendation. Thanks for highlighting booktubers that I can follow!
I read Parable of the Sower for a class and I hope I can do Talents next. It was so INCREDIBLE. The Stars and the Blackness Between Them, Unkindness of Ghosts, and Red at the Bone are def on my reading list now. Don't Call Us Dead is on my favorites shelf! Everybody in the world should read Danez Smith. Thanks for the video, now I'm extra excited for some of the books I'd already heard of + I have new ones to check out
The Earthseed books (Parable of the Sower) is so good! I remember when I read them last year and I was just SHOCKED by how relevant and real it was. Especially when a character was using MAGA as a slogan... I died inside a bit. So prophetic, Octavia Butler was so insightful. And Danez Smith. 🖤🖤🖤 My favorites from that collection were dear white america and dinosaurs in the hood. I found An Unkindness of Ghosts to be a difficult read in a lot of ways, but I think Rivers Solomon could be on the way to revolutionizing what science fiction can and should be. They’re incredible, I really need to check out The Deep.
Thank you for these recommendations! I'm planning to read The Stars and the Blackness Between Them this weekend, along with A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry. 💜
Ouhhh I really want to read Parable of the Sower! I'm waiting for my library to open back up so I can get Patsy!! I need to read more by James Baldwin, I've only read If Beale Street Could Talk.
Hi, Jourdan! I’m new to your channel and I hadn’t heard anyone recommend The Stars and the Blackness Between then, but I looked it up and I can’t wait to read it. I’ve also recently subscribed to Luxurious Blu’s channel, but I’ll also be checking out Capri’s because she sounds amazing! Love from Argentina! 🇦🇷 ❤️
Thanks for the recommendations! Several of these have been on my radar and I loved Once Ghosted, Twice Shy! Some other good ones are All Boys Aren't Blue by George M. Johnson and the Broken Earth Trilogy by N.K. Jemisin
Hi Jourdan! Im glad you mentioned James Baldwin. I hate how he’s always looked over like Malcolm and Garvey. James Balwin has always represented the most oppressed community even when he was a preacher before he started writing. He has always stood his ground. Kept that Blackness level at a solid 9.0 on em! (Just finished Finkelstein Five) lol. Im gonna add Stars and the Blackness between them to the TBR! Are you guys gonna bring the podcast back? Its so dope when you guys let your thoughts out without worrying about time constraints etc. Love!
Whew! The first story is the hardest one [Friday Black], promise it gets less intense from there! But I also miss our talks/ lengths of time! I think our last one took a lot out of Duane so he’s taking a break until a topic/ book really strikes his interest. Hopefully soon 🤞🏾
Lovely recommendations, I definitely want to check out everything else from Akwaeke Emezi, I've read Freshwater and need to read more from them. I also read Giovanni's Room for the first time during June, it blew me away. I need to pick up more from James Baldwin. I listened to All Boys Aren't Blue as well, very enlightening. I'll definitely be picking up something from Jacqueline Wilson, Red on The Bone has been on my TBR for a while but hearing you talk about her here, let's me know I need to pick up her work ASAP.
I love Jacqueline Woodson, I hope you enjoy Woodson’s work too! James Baldwin is really the blue print. Amazing the work he was doing decades ago and how relevant and easy it still reads.
It's been a while since I read Parable of the Sower. I've wanted to reread it, but I don't remember being it LGBTQ? Granted, I've forgot most of it which is why I need to reread it. I'm going to read Patsy this month, and I order a collection of James Baldwin's early works which I am excited for. I have several books I've ordered, and you make me want to order An Unkindness of Ghosts really bad. Thanks for the recs!
thank you for your video! i got a bunch of books to my radar, hopefully i get to them soon. i've just finished Real Life by Brandon Taylor and it was incredible, one of the best books i've read this year. the writing is to die for.
Did you mean Octavia Butler's Parable of the Talents ( Earthseed #2)? I may have missed it but I don't think there was an emphasis on queer relationships in the first book. Nice recs.
Can I read "once ghosted, twice shy" as a standalone or do I have to read the other books from the reluctant royals series because I really want to read it but am currently not interested in something other than a standalone?
I want to.diversify my book shelf im so tired of reading white authors and Ive hardly ever read any queer novels. I finally decided to pick up Maus but I want to read more diverse povs.
Hey Jordan! Awesome channel! Have you heard of an American Author who's self published? His name is Rashid Darden. He writes LGBT books. Check him out. I strongly suggest his series: Lazarus, Covenant, and Epiphany.
is it just me who is suddenly getting tons of diversity in my recs all of a sudden? did TH-cam make a change or did the BLM movement actually created a change in the algorythm? anyway it's nice to see some new faces and not just white!

Anything by Kacen Callender is also good to read for pride, Felix Ever After just came out 😊

Yaaay! It started off slow for me and was one I ALMOST DNFed. So glad I didn’t. I LOVED that book 💛

I almost fell out when I saw “make America great again”. I was like is my mind playing tricks on me? Was this edited? So crazy/ prophetic.
I found your channel as I was looking for a review of «Speak No Evil», and I am so happy I did. Can't wait to watch more of your videos!

I love it 🏳️🌈🗣💯
Love it!
All Boys Aren't Blue, How We Fight For Our Lives are not novels, but they are amazing reads.
Just finished “all boys aren’t blue”. Spoiler, I loved it 💛
@@LEFTONREAD Lol, I'm going to re read it cause Bowties and Books is having a discussion about it on their ENBY Bookclub on July 7th.
I've just got my hands on a James Baldwin book and am desperate to get my hand on An Unkindness of Ghosts. My list of books to buy is FULL :-)
An Unkindness of Ghost will stay with me forever.
So good! I agree.
I’ve been waiting for this! ❤️❤️❤️

Can I read "once ghosted, twice shy" as a standalone or do I have to read the other books from the reluctant royals series because I really want to read it but am currently not interested in something other than a standalone?
I read it without reading the others in the series and it's totally fine!
Yes I agree! Each book, you are able to read by itself/ without reading others. Especially this one.
Hey, where did you get that shirt?

how we fight for our lives by Saeed Jones is a very raw memoir by a gay black man. I'd recommend it
Not related but I like the braids in the thumbnail it's like a bronze/blue ombre.
