A Pandemic Quarantine album project from this Montreal, Québec native. I believe Francis Nothingwater is the best thing that happened to underground music when the global lockdown was happening. I played the entire album, while I followed a list of ritualized operations before I decide to give a critique. First, the most obvious thing I do, is to take a look at whose been writing any previous reviews already (if there are any) but here, I was blown away; immediately, noticed a flurry of recognizable music critics who divulged a plethora of positive reviews. The second, is to look at how many different channels have featured different songs from this new release. And lastly, I'll skim over what the "general air" is like from different people because, no matter what - The listening public is always right.
Then I ignore everything, I just did, so I'm freed to formulate my own conclusion.
Francis Nothingwater, format is that pressing dramatic synth-based deep grumble, which sometimes emanates an 80's analogue Dark-wave emotive quality; having a kind of a Depeche Mode, Mœnia like provenance. Then he pendulates in the opposite spectrum with Industrial-pop imaginations, so very reminiscent of the stylized And One, Covenant like vocalization. Sometimes the vocal's are pushed back, allowing more instrumentation; however, in different areas they're have an overexposed nature, which delineates from the cohesive collection of songs. Without looking before hand, I instinctively found the album has a sensual nature and that's not because of Nothingwater's French vocal's. It's a combination of his stylized base, ghostly floating synthesizer treatments, and such a relaxed but pure vocal's.
Overall, this album has earned my respect even with the occasional deviation; but, I would recommend any one of the German audio engineer's to master his next work, just to tighten everything up.
