In the 90’s this is how I would start my locs. Washing with ivory soap (main chemical that breaks down sebum, which straight hair holds into more than coiled) and rub around under a beanie Day after day. Shampooing once a week or so and rubbing in circles. So I couldn’t see the sponge not working… though with straight hair, I think a beanie and hands would make a thicker loc, which could be better for the health of the loc with straight hair.
