The helmet camera in this game is flat out perfection that other sim games need to take notice. With Need For Speed claiming to start over this needs to be on their board of reboot.
Just checking this again in 2020 ....man this game aged GRACEFULLY ..my best moment is still entering the Nordschleife series and hitting 340kM/H .....INTENSE
The handling isn't the game, to be a good NFS Shift 2 driver you need to start at the bottom, and slowly go futher on and don't hop right into the fastest and most agressive cars, you need to make the skill. Also it's the way how you set-up the car in 'Tuning'. This is defenitly the best game I've ever played and had so much fun, but also so much intens stress while I drive around the Nordschleife in a maxed out Mercedes SLR with a Huayra on my tail. Plus the costumization in this game is so simple, but you can do so much with it... You have to play this game at least 6 months before judging, a 10/10!

Jase Diehl Well, because you can pick it up for a few dollars/euros, it is worth it. But yeah, you can drift, you have GT3 and GT1 cars, it is between arcade style and realistic style and the customization is awsome, but you can only do the rims and livery. Spoilers, splitters etc. are not to choose. Realise that it is a 2011 game, so don't go too hard on the graphics...
The reviewer complains about lack of control, but the truth is that the handling is actually MORE forgiving than real life. Many console gamers got used to Forza and GT handling where the cars grip even when you steer too much(otherwise they'd be unplayable on a gamepad), and throttle control is sorted out for you behind the scenes. When you do a lot of track days or play actual racing simulators(the games that put realism above "fun" or accessibility, like the many great sims by Simbin) you'll know how forgiving this game is. Engine and tire wear is a nice touch though, especially in the 20 lap endurance races. You can wildly dance on the throttle mid-corner without spinning, and overspeeding leads to a bit of understeer that can be sorted out with a weight shift, it should result in a complete loss of active traction. Shift2 with all assists off is a GREAT game(but not a sim), really fun and immersive, except for the helmet cam being a bit... ADHD-ish. Seriously, drivers don't wildly look around in the middle of a tough corner. You don't LOOK at the car next to you, you feel it, see it in your rearview and hear the engine and the tire squeal. The cockpit cam is much better tbh. I like this game because it feels great, but it's still a GAME first and a sim second. And while a few more cars wouldn't hurt, I think it's better to focus on good driving feel over car collection porn. The game could use an auto-setup feature for tracks though. I don't really want to faff about with tuning options for 10h, getting my car set up for every track and race type. It would be nice if the game could do that for me(just like a mechanic would do that for you IRL), while still retaining that option for tuning enthusiasts.

To anybody saying they want a Shift 3: Look up Project Cars. Made by the same studio and runs on the same engine. It will be a full on simulator, but that means better FF for me.
Driving at night in this game reminds me of that top gear episode where they build a race car and race for 24 hours and one part is at night and the camera is placed in the cockpit
There was never Shift 3 BUT the Studio went on making a much better games, The new one called "Project cars 2" and its miles ahead of Forza, GT or Shift

The soundtracks in this game are ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL! Especially Gladiator Remixes. Epic! I know there are better sim-racing games like Assetto Corsa and Project Cars but the adrenaline rush in Shift 2 is sensational. I'd love more games like this.
The important thing to remember when playing Shift 2, for me anyway is simple: It's not trying to recreate driving a car like Forza 3, it's trying to capture the essence and viscreal feel of racing at daft speeds inches from other cars. When you accept that the odd handling makes sense; this is about being on the edge alllllll the time :D

This game is hard even on easy XD. I took me 45 minutes getting used to the controls and trying to get 1st place in the practice race with all assists on.
I've been a Gran Turismo fan since I was 5 (I'm 15 now), but you've gotta admit, the sound engine in this series is x1,000,000 better than GT5. Also a huge fan of sim racing, and the physics don't look that bad. It's like a perfect mix of casual arcade and hardcore sim. Plus the camera adds immersion that GT5 and iRacing don't have.
Been playing Project Cars for the last few days and found it amazing all be it like most games it does comes with some flaws. Had Need For Speed Unleashed 2 PC for a few years and have to say this game still holds it's own even today. Never really been into Gran Turismo because I've found them to be far to linear with a complete lack of atmosphere, sure it must appeal to some people but when it comes to a game having you on the edge of your seat Unleashed 2 still does it for me, I do have one gripe about it in that when you crash you almost always end up facing backwards so by the time you turn round your usually at the back, that said love this game I just love it.
This game is way better than GT5 and forza. Way more realistic forza and gt5 aren't real sims they're in between like the shift series although with shift 2 they shifted more towards sim. Only problem was the steering but with a simple mod and adjusting the wheel settings it finally had some weight too it now it's just epic.
I remember this one race my brother and I had in Underground 2 ages ago...Such a good game. We were both in Hummers, right, long story short, I ended the race upside-down, scraping across the finish line on my roof while my brother was, if I remember correctly...0.118 seconds behind me. Badass it was.
Loved this game. Still do. Can't wait for project cars (sledgehammer games made it) it's more of a hardcore sim than anything else and looks amazing. Comes out later this year.
@videoshirt I was actually referring to Shift 2, because I already have GT5 and I've adjusted to its handling, (yeah it kind of sucks but at least I know when the wheels will spin out). But for Shift 2, I've heard it's way more realistic than GT5 and that a slight turn can spin you out of the track.
true, but still very crap compared to games like midnight club, forza, test drive, other NFS games, juiced, juiced 2, TER/import tuner challenge, SRS, come to think of it... when it comes to customizing both shift games have the worst camera controls of any game I've ever played lol
no numbers? haven't really messed around in the vinyl editor that much aside from just painting the cars a diff color or trying to put racing stripes on 1 or 2. was scared off so to speak by the camera angles, lol

Cars still dont handle as cars, sry cant play a driving game where steering wheels seems to be the back wheels, garbage. And input lag is horrible, i never felt like driving a real car, never felt in control. ProStreet was better in every way
I loved the first shift, they struck the balance right in terms of realism and arcade. It really made you feel like an awesome racing driver. It would be interesting to see the same mechanics employed in an open-world Need for Speed title.

I think Need For Speed should go back to the days of tight city racing and crushing cops, like Carbon and Most Wanted 2. With today's graphics and all of the new possibilities, it would be spectacular. Just in case you're going to say, "But the new games have cops in them too!" I reply: I have Need for Speed Rivals, but I have several problems with it. 1. Graphics, let me explain. With how complicated they've made the scenery, it makes it difficult to focus on the actual point of the game: driving, (unless you have a TV the size of a wall). 2. The police. They're just way too hard to beat and evade. And you have to buy "equipment" which, again, distracts from the driving. 3. Road layout. All of the roads are just single roads with intersections every 5-10 miles or so. It adds to the difficulty in evading the police and eliminates the fun of creating your own paths and finding hidden shortcuts. Go ahead and argue if you wish, but I will back my points.
Actually, its pretty close. I've not driven too fast, but I've been out on a runway with the fuel and cargo crew in a rental car barreling down the runway from one end to the other, and even on such a wide road it feels exactly like in Shift 2, scary as hell. You feel every tiny microbump in the tarmac and the "loseness" of the physics described in the video is pretty accurate, because every movement of the steering-wheel punishes the G-force elongated tyres as they hit every microbump.
Was planning to pick this up, but there's no local muiltiplayer (aka split screen) which could be a deal breaker for me. Was planning to play this with roommates.
hey. when you steer is there a delay from when you move the steering stick until the car turns. like a 200ms- 300ms delay? is that wat the steering is meatn to be like to make it harder? or just me?
The big problem with both Shift 1 and Shift 2's handling, is that it's made to work mostly with a standard controller, rather than a good racing wheel. I played both mostly with a controller, and yes, the cars were all sliding over the road. But after some time, I decided to get a steering wheel. By surprise, both Shift 1 and 2 handled much more realistic. I actually managed to do some races without any sliding in Shift 1. They're not sims, but not that bad either.
How hard are the controls. I'm comparing this to GT5 and I'm not sure if the controls are better or worse. I like sim games but only to an extent. Can someone tell me if turning in this game is a pain.
The only thing that still bothers me about this game and many other FP racing games is that the rear view mirror doesn't actually reflect. It doesn't show the backseat of the vehicle. It just shows another camera view. :(
I think the "loseness" of the physics add realism, anyone can drive a car at the very limit of its capability for ONE round, but after that it takes professional racing driver stamina to keep it on the road at the limit. I still play Shift 2 today because its such a challenge.

Traction control (it's function) is designed to ensure that all drive wheels are applying torque in the proper amounts. When one of them does not the system takes steps (one or more depending on the vehicle) to fix the issue, such as applying brake pressure, reducing spark or fuel input, reducing boost pressure, etc... If TC is kicking in heavily when you hit a corner then you're obviously doing it wrong. And the fact that you are also explains why your car spins off for "no reason".
Shift 2 actually has amazing physics, the rival or surpass GT5 and Forza 3. Now, the reason the cars feel floaty is because the developers did a bad job of setting up each car's tuning. The cars generally have a tire pressure of about 50 PSi. That's way too much, so drop it between 32 and 40 PSi. Rear camber needs to be more negative. Suspension is also generally too soft. Put the steering lock around 10 if you are using a pad. These general settings will make Shift 2 behave more like a
i forgot to mention all the tuning which i love aswell. what do you mean by clones? like two different cars race the exact same way? cause if thats what you mean even if they werent clones, with so many cars the differences would be so small between similar cars that you wouldnt notice it anyway.
Finally, a head-cam that actually looks at turns. I actually sent Sony a message to include that on Gran Turismo 5 when I played Prologue. I hope all racing games follow this trend. Likewise, I'm now hooping that all FPSs will have the alternative (note that I wrote alternative, not "default") of having a lowered aim reticule so that you have to look a bit more upwards to aim at the stright at horizont... Why? You would fill the screen with more awe than 50% looking at the ground.
@SVENKARDEL I'm loving the helmet cam and drifting is my favorite. I just hope I can adapt to the drifting mechanics here. My only concern is cornering in the game, because this review and a couple other walkthroughs still gives me the chills when they crash to the walls after breaking. Just tells me that it may not be fun when I'm racing for long laps and a mistake like corning can get me to last place.

@3iMi5 The origin of NFS is street racing in exotic cars without tuning and on different tracks all around the world. I highly recommend you the first Hot Pursuit or NFS2.
Thanks! :D I havent played Dirt games exept Showdown demo and I were not impressed by it. I agree, many of the cars from Forza are meant to stay on the track. Kinda argee with you there. But i love the way you can make you'r car ready for the track, It really looks like a 100% race car. In Forza you only put a smal front spoiler and a normal spoiler in the back, so they still kinda looks original.+Shift have awsome turbo noises, i love turbos.

@Kloutair so what should you be banned from xbox live for driving aggressive? Or do you mean that the car should controll itself so that the player cant crash into other cars? doesent sound like a very good idea, if you want realistic car experience you should get one or test drive in real life...

I think Need For Speed should go back to the days of tight city racing and crushing cops, like Carbon and Most Wanted 2. With today's graphics and all of the new possibilities, it would be spectacular.
Just in case you're going to say, "But the new games have cops in them too!" I reply:
I have Need for Speed Rivals, but I have several problems with it. 1. Graphics, let me explain. With how complicated they've made the scenery, it makes it difficult to focus on the actual point of the game: driving, (unless you have a TV the size of a wall). 2. The police. They're just way too hard to beat and evade. And you have to buy "equipment" which, again, distracts from the driving. 3. Road layout. All of the roads are just single roads with intersections every 5-10 miles or so. It adds to the difficulty in evading the police and eliminates the fun of creating your own paths and finding hidden shortcuts.
Go ahead and argue if you wish, but I will back my points.

Actually, its pretty close. I've not driven too fast, but I've been out on a runway with the fuel and cargo crew in a rental car barreling down the runway from one end to the other, and even on such a wide road it feels exactly like in Shift 2, scary as hell. You feel every tiny microbump in the tarmac and the "loseness" of the physics described in the video is pretty accurate, because every movement of the steering-wheel punishes the G-force elongated tyres as they hit every microbump.
Is this worth buying if I already have the first game?

Was planning to pick this up, but there's no local muiltiplayer (aka split screen) which could be a deal breaker for me. Was planning to play this with roommates.
This or GT5? I have GT5 Prologue and the first Shift and I enjoyed the first Shift more...

The big problem with both Shift 1 and Shift 2's handling, is that it's made to work mostly with a standard controller, rather than a good racing wheel. I played both mostly with a controller, and yes, the cars were all sliding over the road. But after some time, I decided to get a steering wheel. By surprise, both Shift 1 and 2 handled much more realistic. I actually managed to do some races without any sliding in Shift 1.
They're not sims, but not that bad either.

How hard are the controls. I'm comparing this to GT5 and I'm not sure if the controls are better or worse. I like sim games but only to an extent. Can someone tell me if turning in this game is a pain.
The only thing that still bothers me about this game and many other FP racing games is that the rear view mirror doesn't actually reflect. It doesn't show the backseat of the vehicle. It just shows another camera view.

I think the "loseness" of the physics add realism, anyone can drive a car at the very limit of its capability for ONE round, but after that it takes professional racing driver stamina to keep it on the road at the limit. I still play Shift 2 today because its such a challenge.

Just bought this like it but the wheel in game isn't matching my logitech wheel inputs any way to solve this
Traction control (it's function) is designed to ensure that all drive wheels are applying torque in the proper amounts. When one of them does not the system takes steps (one or more depending on the vehicle) to fix the issue, such as applying brake pressure, reducing spark or fuel input, reducing boost pressure, etc... If TC is kicking in heavily when you hit a corner then you're obviously doing it wrong. And the fact that you are also explains why your car spins off for "no reason".
11 years later, no other game matches Shift 2's sense of speed.

Shift 2 actually has amazing physics, the rival or surpass GT5 and Forza 3. Now, the reason the cars feel floaty is because the developers did a bad job of setting up each car's tuning. The cars generally have a tire pressure of about 50 PSi. That's way too much, so drop it between 32 and 40 PSi. Rear camber needs to be more negative. Suspension is also generally too soft. Put the steering lock around 10 if you are using a pad. These general settings will make Shift 2 behave more like a

i forgot to mention all the tuning which i love aswell. what do you mean by clones? like two different cars race the exact same way? cause if thats what you mean even if they werent clones, with so many cars the differences would be so small between similar cars that you wouldnt notice it anyway.
Finally, a head-cam that actually looks at turns. I actually sent Sony a message to include that on Gran Turismo 5 when I played Prologue.
I hope all racing games follow this trend.
Likewise, I'm now hooping that all FPSs will have the alternative (note that I wrote alternative, not "default") of having a lowered aim reticule so that you have to look a bit more upwards to aim at the stright at horizont... Why? You would fill the screen with more awe than 50% looking at the ground.

I'm loving the helmet cam and drifting is my favorite. I just hope I can adapt to the drifting mechanics here. My only concern is cornering in the game, because this review and a couple other walkthroughs still gives me the chills when they crash to the walls after breaking. Just tells me that it may not be fun when I'm racing for long laps and a mistake like corning can get me to last place.
@ThisxisxGaming why do you buy a game? to have fun! when i used to play most wanted and undeground i had lots of fun playing them. i dont have fun playing these simulation games.
@3iMi5 The origin of NFS is street racing in exotic cars without tuning and on different tracks all around the world. I highly recommend you the first Hot Pursuit or NFS2.

I agree, many of the cars from Forza are meant to stay on the track.
Kinda argee with you there. But i love the way you can make you'r car ready for the track, It really looks like a 100% race car. In Forza you only put a smal front spoiler and a normal spoiler in the back, so they still kinda looks original.+Shift have awsome turbo noises, i love turbos.
