What people outside the US should be aware of before buying the new Atari 2600+

  • In my review video for the 2600+ I said that there were no problems playing European 2600 games. But it turns out there are problems. In this video we will investigate this further and see whether this can be solved with a firmware update. Finally, we will do some game hunting in Amsterdam to look for new 2600 games!

    Very interesting! I really enjoy your channel. I wish they made a new version of the 800xl or 130xe.

    Great choice of games you bought from the Retro Shop! .
    The UK Atari Users Club magazine in the 1970s had people writing in after buying systems in the USA asking how to get them working (not a fault of Atari) but now an official product is still a problem 46 years later 🤦🏻

      Even though we have been rid of NTSC and PAL for years, thanks to DVB, it continues to haunt us to this day.

    It's good to see Atari is serious about making improvements to this machine.

      There still appear to be serious problems with the beta version. I hope they can resolve this soon.

    The 1.1 beta version is so good in terms of colors for Pal games, but It has a so much Big problem, games that flicker like Pacman, frogger, crystal Castles, etc, have dissapearing sprites and are totaly unplayable.
    They're working on it

      Good that you mentioned it. I'll try Pacman again after my update.

    Interestingly, I've had an NTSC Atari 2600 VCS, but out of my 17 cartridges, 2 were PAL (one is Asteroids, which I got from a classmate at school who gott it in Germany, and the other one is Moon Patrol, which my aunt brought me from a trip to Germany too). Back then, in order to play them on my NTSC, I would just have to turn the V-sync knob at the back of the TV until the image would stop rolling on the screen (and I could leave it in that position for the TV to still work with both NTSC cartridges and regular NTSC broadcast TV programs). The colors were never a problem for me, at least with those two games.
    Does the firmware update turn the 2600+ into a PAL version so that NTSC cartridges will display the same colors you showed when plugging them into your old PAL 2600 VCS, or does it become an "universal"/"autoselect" system that will work well with both NTSC and PAL cartridges?
    And being an electronics engineer myself (specialized in broadcasting, particularly) I'll just mention that NTSC, PAL and SECAM refer to the color "encoding" method only, with and additional letter (traditionally omitted for NTSC, since basically every country using it was using the same system otherwise, identified with the letter "M") to indicate the broadcasting system itself (60 Hz or 50Hz frequency, 525 or 625 scan lines -though those two parameters tend to be tied together-, 6MHz or 7MHz channel bandwidth, etc.) which was established first when TV was in black and white, before color was added. For PAL color encoding, you could find A, B, N and M systems Brazil for example used PAL-M, which only differed from NTSC in the color encoding method, so you could watch Brazilian shows on a NTSC TV on a neighboring country like Peru, just they would be seen in B&W. Makes me wonder what sort of 2600 VCS they got in Brazil...

      I think the 2600+ can detect whether there is a PAL or NTSC cartridge in it. The 10-in-1 cartridge (NTSC) still works well after the update.
      Interesting story, about the letters added to NTSC and PAL. I didn't know that those letters determine the broadcast system and NTSC and PAL is only about the colors. Thank you for explaining!

    I think the likely problem is that PAL systems are signal converted from NTSC, but not converted to PAL color schemes. This will likely happen again on the new The 400 mini system.

    • @gespy
      @gespy  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don't think the 400 mini will be affected by this. As far as I know there are no separate NTSC and PAL versions of Atari 8-Bit software.

    • @michaelstoliker971
      @michaelstoliker971 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@gespy Perhaps, but there were two separate bodies of software for the 8-bit, those which were written in the US (NTSC), and those that were written in Europe (PAL). There was at least some intersection of those two bodies of software at least in the beginning.

      It's interesting to see the issue with PAL cartridges didn't have more attention from Atari given that Atari is now a European company! (the French company Infogrames bought the rights to Atari and subsequently renamed itself Atari SA)

    That's interesting, because while Atari was an American company, the completely different company now using the name is not American.
    Let's face it. Atari's dead! In today's "crazy" world, other companies license the name and really are not the same companies at all, and often, there will be several different separate companies licensing the same name. Totally ridiculous, and very confusing for the customers. You'll note names like Polaroid, Emerson, and many others are being used by 20 different companies that have nothing to do with each other, and....nothing to do with the original companies. I feel this is ridiculous. And in the music world, the names of famous bands are also licensed out and the original members can no longer make new music or tour using their own name!
    If you enjoy new products fine, but you should really not think of this as being from.....Atari.

    • @gespy

      The current company that weares the name Atari was originally Infogrames. That was a French company, but due to the various transitions it can be considered an American company today. I believe the financialy they are still in Paris, but the head office is in New York and is led by Americans.
      Many people share your opinion that this Atari is no longer the original Atari. But from what company can you still say that about 50 years later? Most companies no longer employ anyone from 50 years ago and have undergone many transitions to keep up with the times. And what is the original Atari? The Bushnell period? The Warner period? The Tramiel period? I think that when a company buys the name of another company, they not only own the name, but they also own the responsibility to continue the legacy. The current Atari indeed neglected this for a long time, also because of the difficult financial situation they found themselves in. Then they have to move on in survival mode. I think under the leadership of Wade Rosen they are back on the right track.

      @@gespy Often companies stem from the same people. Family members, or family members of the key people take over, etc.
      I still consider the Warner Atari the real Atari because they still had a lot of key people there from the Bushnell era such as Ed Logg for example (who went to Atari Games when Tramiel took over). And also, Atari was most recognized and made a lot of their best products during the Time/Warner era.
      I don't consider the Tramiel period the real Atari either. That was simply an opportunity for the Commodore founder to offer his new products using a name people recognized focusing on is Atari ST made by former C-64 people. However, I believe he did keep some of the main buildings in CA and a skeleton crew of Atari's previous workers. And it was also still entirely here in America.
      I hope your right that Atari's on the right path currently, but I'd have done a few things differently.
