Hello, Being interested in the realization of the model of this ship, (by the way, I would appreciate a lot to also find a comparable model of the Normandie and its after-market components), I am in phase of studying and gathering all the possible elements to improve this model.
By looking to improve the issues related to C-deck, B-deck and A-deck, I discovered a solution provided by a part designed by Elixander Chamoun from Scale The Titanic. In the meanwhile, I cannot find an active website and I read your confirmation here.
Do you have any news about a re-issuing? An alternate solution?
      Thank you.
      All the best

I received my set a few weeks ago and it's just delicious!...delicate yet tough, detailing sublime I am going to take extreme care when I reach the installation stage of my model.

On the glazing, I think this would be a great project to use microscope slide cover glass. They come 24mm x 24mm and are only 0.13mm thick. It would give you crystal clear windows and portholes. They usually come 100/box for around $8 US. I would think anyone going to the trouble of installing this set would want glazing that looks the part and isn't hazy or scratched. It would be quite a project in its own right installing all of it, for sure. Just a thought. Great review as always, Nige!

Just search Slide Cover Glass. Amazon or any of a dozen other places have it. Not too hard to find.

Looking forward to your video of how you add this to the main hull and paint it. Having seen the instructions for the 1/200, the superstructure builds itself almost like the Academy 1/400 making the painting easier, though now adding this photo etch kinda scraps everything and have to attach the sides first, then like the old Minicraft 1/350 and Revell 1/400 kits paint them which are a headache to paint. Looking forward to your solution before jumping and getting this for my kit since that detail my gawd...its beautiful.
It's a pity K.A. didn't contact you since I had originally purchased their detail set, but had other expenses and asked for my money return, and they quickly responded. Oh well. Their loss.

Glad you got this part Nigel. Will be interesting to see how much of the original you leave behind. I'm thinking of cutting out large sections in the side of C & B deck leaving more or less a frame to hold the deck floors.

How will you be attaching these thin, rather large sheets to the plastic model? Looks like the brass sheets are "warp-prone". How will the "backer sheets" be attached to each other?
      Level of detail is impressive!
      Is "CANOPY GLUE" a possibility?
CA glue seems dangerous to me when trying to "line up" the overlapping large pieces.
Looking forward to seeing how you attach to the plastic! THIS WILL BE VERY INTERESTING!!!
      Re: ANNEALING.
I've seen a TH-cam that suggested (as a way to gauge the amount of heating required) marking the brass surface with a "Sharpie" marker and then heating with a torch (moving torch back & forth for even heating) until the Sharpie marks "cook off". What do you think?

    • @NigelsModellingBench

Great video Nigel. I would have got this straight away but as I am converting my kit to the Olympic there is no point! I have ordered the stern plating and detail though. I agree with you about the thickness of the plastic. I am committed to thinning it down wherever possible which is hard work and prone to warping if taken too far. At the rate that we are going there wont be much of the original kit left that's usable, what with the Pontos bits and other add on's that are becoming available now!!! New rudder, better anchor chain etc etc. MiniBrass do some good stuff too but it can be fractionally oversized for the Trumpeter kit in some areas. However there is nothing that a good file cant sort out! :-)

I receive my set a few days ago, and jumped right into it without reading every word of the instructions (typical guy, right).
I started with the B and C pieces from sheet 1, because they only have on backing piece each. When I cut the front pieces from the sheet they immediately curled into almost a full tube. The backing pieces stayed virtually flat. I was able to tape down the front pieces and get the backing glued on, and the assembly stayed pretty flat after some pressure from "Titanic the Ship Magnificent" which is also a great reference:)

It's difficult to get your head around just how beautiful and exquisitely detailed these tiny parts are. I take it you are going totally detail crazy and considering the 3D printed set that contains all those resin grand staircases, and hundreds of tables and chairs too? This one kit is turning into a lifes work with all theses extra details sets - and that might not be a bad thing !

  • @Yves95128

Hi Nigel, this looks really tempting, but the scale of trumpeter is too big for me, I have a 1/570 Revell that I'm building slowly, on the side , (the detail is honestly not so bad, at least it's got the radio antenna and so on) , I'm detailing it (using laser-cutting for, of course the deck but also replacing some of the crude walls, with "glass" on the back,...), removing "walls" where there should be railing etc. it's a fun project but very time consuming due to the CAD work and "calipering" everything, It would be great if Alex scales down his p.e. to 1/350 Minicraft and 1/570(?) Revell. I think that the 1/350 is a good compromise as kit, not too big, not too expensive, decent detail and some aftermarket parts available like railing, benches, chairs...from Tom's model (I'm intimidated by expensive kits that I'm afraid to screw-up). It's amazing that nobody is able to reproduce an accurate kit of this iconic ship, there is tons of documentation.
    Regards, Yves.

Great review. I'm sold. This should keep the Rivet Counters busy for a while. I wish Alexander had a 1/400 scale set for the Academy Titanic. If the 1/200 scale set improves the Trumpeter kit that much image what it can do for a 1/400 scale kit.

I'm a bit worried about the seem when the different parts are mated side by side - the underlying backing plates seem to have the same seem line, so how to get them to be in plane with each other, looks like a challenge - as you can't putty them together.

    • @scalethetitanic3711
      @scalethetitanic3711 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Seems was a necessary evil. The kit is huge and even split into four sections these parts are very big. Any bigger than this and they would have been very difficult to work with. There are two ways of approaching the seems. If you use the kit plastic behind you will have an even bed for the PE to attach to which means they will be in level with each other. If you omit the kit plastic, a simple piece of plastic or scrap PE behind the seam will also align the pieces perfectly from C-deck up to B-deck 😊

@@NigelsModellingBench I'm going to buy the trumpeter kit soon, but I'm confused as to what I would need to get on the side to improve it, I saw an updated detail box set that sells for over £300 which is a a lot on top of the £350 kit you need to get with the hull.
Like you said, I heard they worked with a team to make it accurate and changed it three times before settling with the kit.
When I see what you are doing with the hull, it blows my mind, wouldn't be easier to make a new 3D digital model and have it printed??? haha
