(1-question-aswer) Use set object, get random number insert and check if not inserted call again random number repeat the process hence you will get random numbers in set for required size. Convert to list or array. That's it. You cando the same for normal array too. But loop thru the size developed by array and find duplicate, re generate random and try to fit the element in number.

What if you now want to remove the element which was swapped earlier ?!
Lookup will still say, it's position is towards the end of arraylist but its not, So you have to update value of that integer in hashMap everytime you remove an Integer.

yesterday only I tried to solve this median problem on leetcode it's difficulty level is hard. I also tried insertion sort while adding it to an array. that doesn't help, I think we need to use to priority queues

Make sure that arraylist is better for only Retrieval operation
For modification purpose we won't go for arraylist , it decreases the performance
