I made one a year ago. It uproots trees in a minute and leaves no holes.
You can download the blueprints in the description below the video.Print them out on a printer. Glue them to the metal.

Where there are larger trees, I recommend putting a board underneath.

I just tested mine out. I didn't do all of the reinforcement because i made it out of 1/4" and 3/8" plate. I regrettably made my base plate too narrow, but the ground im using it on requires a board underneath for EVERYTHING 1/4" or bigger.
It yanked roots up that were way bigger than i was expecting, and took no more time than it would have to cut them to the ground with the loppers, only to have them grow back year after year. I have water oak, Laurel and china berry trees that are constantly dropping seeds.

I thought about building my own, but when I figure-in the time and cost of materials & required equipment, I realized it's much better to buy one. I decided on the orange-handled version because it has easy-to-use features, and it looks much more durable than the white one. For $160(usd), it's DEFINITELY worth the time/effort saved. Plus, I like the idea of supporting a small business.

They rent those locally here in Minnetonka Minnesota for $75 a week, I'm on the search for a used one, in my mind I came up with a dingo attachment that could rip out acres worth of them mechanically, but no such thing

I'd recommend finding someone with one of these and asking them about it. I just tried to pull up a less than 1" trunk Weed Tree (Tree of Heaven) with a comealong (1000 lbs) It wiggled the base but didn't budge any of the root. Of course root structure... but this lever wouldn't have done any better. I"m a sailor, physics teacher and I was a framing carpenter... so I think I know leverage. If it does work for your situation and your ground conditions - great. (The ground conditions in my neighbor's yard is it digs very easy, nice top soil. What really needs to happen is the roots need to be exposed and cut, or just ground up (but that might just replant it))

Very interesting. It looks like it would do a good job of uprooting trees. I'm struggling with pulling long horizontal roots from the ground here at home. Some of the roots are 20 feet long, maybe an inch to an inch and a half thick. Since the roots run horizontal, getting the jaws attached would be harder. An interesting modification would be to replace the "jaws" end of this with a curved section similar to what's on the other side of the tool. You could slip that part underneath a section of the tree root and pull it up a section at a time. I don't know if that idea makes sense, but I thought I'd pass it along. Thank you for posting this video. I enjoyed it. Unfortunately I don't have the skills to build it.

Could an old steel car wheel be cut up for the radius section?
That could save some cutting and welding
I thought the same thing! I was trying to figure out a way to make this without a welder and a wheel makes sense.
Just keep in mind, the curved part of the “foot” doesn’t need to be strong as steel. A flat bar could run the length of the foot with some wood under it, cut into the curve if you even feel it’s necessary.
That’s what I’m going to do with what I have built so far.

Secondly:
A) I'm disabled with 60% L-side paralysis and no functional use of my left hand, arm, and left ankle which acts like nothing more than a ball joint after surviving a massive stroke.
B) I have no welding equipment, and quite not so coincidentally - no welding experience - which not so surprisingly gives me no desire to purchase such equipment.
C) My only option if I want one is to buy one!
