    Every stanza of the song lists things that are destroying us as a society and as a species. The line that really grabs your attention here refers not only metaphorically to the treatment of blacks in America as second class citizens, but also literally to Eric Garner being suffocated, as the video for this song points out. In between this litany of societal ills he throws in the chorus, I'd love it if we made it. In other words, in spite of all these things I've listed, I hope we somehow make it through all this shit as a species.

    I definitely think he knows more than what you're giving him credit for. Yes, he said that he doesn't know everything, but not everyone can know everything about a subject. And I agree, if he doesn't know a lot about a topic like this then he shouldnt be writing and singing about it, but from following him on social media and listening to his interviews you can tell he's in the process of learning about it. And I don't think u can blame him for writing this song when he did. He may have been early in his journey of learning about all these issues, but that shouldn't mean he isn't allowed to write about it when it's poignant and relevant at the time. That entire song is just essentially him talking about what makes him angry in the world, he's not trying to have an in depth discussion about it within the context of the song. I think someone should be allowed to state what angers them. I totally get where you're coming from, but for someone so removed from learning US history, especially black history, like he is since he's from the UK, you can't expect him to off bat know all this stuff about the topic when he wrote the song. Like I said, I do feel as though he is definitely trying and I can guarantee that he knows a lot more about it at this point in time then he did when he wrote the song which I think is great. Since he put those lines in there, people called him out similarly to how you did and that forced him to learn even more about what he was talking about. He is a very smart guy when you listen to other interviews of him so although he may not know everything about the topic, which most people don't let's be real here, I do believe he let this be a learning moment for himself as well as his fans. He has a giant UK audience, more so than in the US, so if by him mentioning these issues in a song means more people around the world learn about these issues then I think that's important. I totally get where you're coming from but I do think you were a little harsh in your assessment of his knowledge level as well as his intentions.

    Though I agree with your outlook on how the 1975 handled this situation. This song is more about all the messed up things in the world and the title and the lyrics “love it if we made it” said many times throughout the song is mocking the fact that we are utterly screwed. Phrase is in direct contrast and it emphasizes that the artist believes we won’t make it. He reinforces this by putting all theses incredibly messed up and important topics on the table.

    To me this song is like the modern “We Didn’t Start the Fire”. A comment on current events.
    The song also plays with irony in the way it states lyrics with no context.
    Like when he says “I moved on her like a b*tch”, it’s a Trump quote. Matty found it ironic that the song couldn’t be played on radio with that line in there but could be publicly known as a quote of the US president.

  • @redbandita020

    I think you completely misunderstood the gist of the lyrics. It's a sarcastic view of headlines and slogans they collected off the internet in 2018, Trump quotes, etc. The video that comes with the song will put it into better context, I guess.

      Thanks for looking into it on a more profound level. It what the song deserves, I feel,.and you seemed to be getting the wrong end of the stick. So I appreciate your going back to it, and also responding to my comment.
      They love to juxtapose beautiful, happy boppy tunes with lyrics that then carry "dark" messages.
      "Ugh" is about cocaine, "Chocolate" about weed, and "It's not living if it's not with you" about the singer's heroine addiction.
      Their lyrics are what's keeping me from playing their tunes loud in front of my kids... I don't want to expose them, just yet, to their commentary on casual sex ("Sex" is about loving somebody who is already in a relationship who uses you for casual sex, "Girls" ("she can't be what you need when she's seventeen...") and "Settle down", similar.)
      However, I just turned 47, yesterday, and their lyrics regularly catapult me back to my teens and twenties, where many such stories played out with and around me.
      It makes me reflect on what my kids will be facing when they grow up, and how much of my past I will be sharing with them when they need solid advice to respect themselves and make good choices.
      And yes, the music is so, so good to ears that developed a musical taste in the 80's.

    Artist can only platform and bring awareness to issues. So, the world can then protest and put pressure to the system. Apartheid was dismantled by protest that led to pressure and sanctions... by no means is it one person's job to have solutions to social and systematic issues. Cut him some slack, he means well, no ill intentions, he is the most left artist I know and says things other artist are afraid to say, and speaks up against all forms of discrimination, he is a good dude.

    I prefer sincere reactions like this, as a lot of reactions channels just lick up an artists ass just for views.
    The meaning of a “first reaction” video is to literally show the first reaction to the music, raw & & unfiltered. Of course songs with topics like this are not gonna be taken well in a first reaction video (or at all even). People don’t understand the premise of first reaction videos & thats on them. I love this reaction!! I’ve been listening to a couple songs by them ever since I was a teen and this is truly my favorite song by them. When I heard the lyric I was taken aback too like ... wai wha? 😳 but when I actually watched the video and read the lyrics I realized he was talking about things that are fucked up that happen. And this was BEFORE the George Floyd situation! Which made it even more crazy because it was almost like he channeled something prophetically.
    Look I’m not here to tell black people how to feel. You’re justified in your reaction and you have a right to feel how you feel.
    How I feel is, he may be from the UK but almost every country was involved in protests for the whole George Floyd situation and I’m sure it’s no secret to the rest of the world what’s been going on with us in this country. I dont think someone has to be a scholar in a subject to know that something is clearly happening. Ask any black person about black history and the melanin market and i bet you they won’t be able to tell you either. I think what he was saying is that he’s not going to get up there and claim that he’s the most woke person ever and now he’s an activist and he’s a leader for the revolution like no, he’s an artist speaking his peace. He’s not going to act like he knows it all , he was just being humble . There are a lot of white people that are really doing the most just to “not be seen as racist” and it looks like he doesn’t have the same conviction of “oh I better not say anything about black people or else it’s racist because I’m white” which is good. I trust him more than the one whose overdoing it trying to get invited to the barbecue. 😂 all in all I loved this reaction and this was definitely thought provoking and I love your passion. It’s a complex situation regarding race in America, because literally everything has been designed strategically to make our lives unbearable in this country, but that conversation is for another day. Regarding this song, my goal was just to show the natural progression of what I was feeling throughout the process, and I could have edited out the parts where I got emotional, but I think you definitely got where I was coming from so I don’t have to explain that :) I respect his creative freedom, I just wasn’t used to such shocking delivery. Ok so I feel like after watching your reaction and reading through all the comments, no one has really been able to point out how the song was misunderstood. The song is not taking a stand for anything either way. The point of the song is to just display a lot of current events that Matty Healy (the singer) believes are problems and that show the current state of things “modernity has failed us” but the songs job in the context of the album was not to share Mattys opinions on the important topics it was him bringing light to them on putting them on display in the song and the idea is that any sane and reasonable, educated person will react in the way you originally did. Like “wow, that’s fucked and shocking” because these are things actually happening in the US and the world right now. So it’s up to the listener to form the opinions on what is talked about In the song. The band have other songs where they actually share THEIR OWN political opinions like “People” for example.

    • @StiloReacts
      @StiloReacts  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      So hindsight is always 20/20 correct, It was the intention that was unclear at the time of recording. I knew it was meant to be shocking, but simply bringing attention to it and not actively helping doesn't do anything than stroke your own artistic ego. Especially when you benefit from the structures at hand. I could have taken it out, but its the natural progression of the reaction that I felt was valid to share. After reading all the comments, I see I misunderstood. But I should be expected to misunderstand nuances on a first listen. Especially on complex topics. This wasn't a surface level song. And since many artists have pillaged our culture, taken from our genius, and directly have profited from our people and have been compensated far more handsomely for it (as said in the record), it wasn't enough for me just to point to the obvious here. What are you doing to change it? When I saw the quote "Im just an artist I don't have any solutions" that didn't sit right with me. That's what initially angered me. You should want to be an ally or don't bring any attention at all, cause then it looks like you are trying to be provocative for different reasons. And you get to say those things log out and live your life as an English man, while people who look like me have to deal with this day in and day out. We can't turn this off.

      @@StiloReacts I get the misunderstanding for sure just trying to help clear it up! But Matty healy has went on record advocating and being an ally for many including BLM, supporting women’s right to choose, lgbtq, the climate movement and many others. He is almost as much an activist as he is an artist but sadly a lot of times his quotes are easily taken out of context because he strives to still be very human so he isn’t always thinking about how his words will sound as a headline or in an article.

    First of all I want to say that I really enjoyed this reaction. This song is actually one of my favorite songs ever, and out of all the reaction vids I've seen, this one stuck with me the most (which is why I decided to leave a comment on it).
    Like many others mentioned: to me, the song is about the singer listing all the horrible stuff going on in the world today (people saying controversial things for attention, making a 'business' out of crime (the prison system?), the 'fuck your feelings' crowd, "hardening positions based on miscommunication" ...and then expressing his hope for the future with "I'd love it if we made it" in the chorus. This also has a double meaning because it can be interpreted as, 'he would really really like his band to be successful', but personally I think he's talking about the state of the world we live in today and how he wants humanity itself to pull through and make it to a better future.
    I really liked your response to the tone switch in 4:24 when you said, "You're lucky the music is good, I would have been cut this sh*t off!" That part always catches people off guard and your reaction is my favorite of all time. I don't know how to explain this properly, but in a world where people are so quick to press [X] on the stuff they're not so sure about, I appreciate the fact that you went through and listened until the very end.

    1. i think you missed some of the tone especially in what he was saying about the song because he was being sarcastic for some of it
    2. I think he has done research and knows more than you were giving him credit for (from following him on social media he definitely tries to use his platform for good) so I think he was just trying to reiterate how he's not perfect and his privilege although it could have been worded better on his part
    3. yes it's shocking, and it's shocking on purpose, but I think sometimes it has to be for people to listen? but I completely understand your point on that part because black trauma is often commodified and I think that part when he was talking about how he's just an artist was kind of insensitive

      Hi! I hope you didn't take it as I was dragging you for making the recommendation, I was just a tad bit caught off guard. I do wish I would have taken that into account--tone wise of how it could be sarcastic. I asked my friend about this song, because he's a 1975 fan, and he'd never heard this song. He was the one who sent me the quote. And since I never really listened to this band before, I had no idea about the lead singer's sense of humor. While I was recording this, I knew it was something I was missing. And I'm glad you and his fans will probably share that he is using his platform and is trying to help change the way things are. It sucks because I do believe I, (and a lot of people) put way too much emphasis on artists and celebrities to lead the change when it is our system that has failed us. It's not his fault. It's just a sensitive topic and an open wound that I don't think will be healed in my lifetime. Nonetheless, it was a good suggestion because it's opening up dialogue and I want to thank you for that.

    I think you took one line out of its context and made a big assumption about it my guy.
    I mean the whole song is pulling observations and issues from around the world, not necessarily going for or against any of them.
    I also don’t think you need to know everything about something to made a basic observation about it, such as ‘glamourising black culture while simultaneously demonising black people is wrong’.
    ‘like context in a modern debate I just took it out’ Matty spitting facts
    .
    He’s also quite a smart guy so I don’t think he was as blind to the situation as he sounded. I think he said ‘as a Englishman I don’t know as much about the topic’ (which made him sound completely clueless) to avoid the game of 21 questions he would’ve gotten in response if he’d said he’s fully researched & educated himself. Or to also avoid the argument of ‘this privileged white Englishman is trying to tell us about our history’ that people would’ve had because in these situations no matter what people often times just want to start a fight, call someone racist, cancel them and not actually listen to anything outside of their immediate thoughts.
    Him responding and sounding kind of naive was probably the best way of handling peoples responses.

    I know this reaction is older and I do not know how you feel about it now but my interpretation as a white man in his late 30s who has witnessed the struggles of black America first hand growing up around them most of my life ( Detroit area ) I feel as though the lyric itself can be interpreted in a negative manner on first listen. However if you actually think about it deeper and break it down word for word it can be understood better.
    Selling melanin - Our country sells black culture, eats it up and loves it. White people emulate it and try to understand it and use it for their own self righteous benefit but then we
    Suffocate the black man - We sell their image as a whole but then we suffocate them and bring them down and leave them to struggle. We act as though we care on a surface level and love all people but in reality our country does not give a shit. Even the organizations meant to help them.
    Basically I feel the lyric points out a major hypocrisy in our system. One that we overlook way too often.

      Most who comment on this video have not chosen to inquire why I felt the way I did… they have been set in stone in their views on my reaction… like my FIRST reaction to something as jarring as the subject matter was completely unjustified… of course I lacked context it was a first listen.
      So since I cannot expect a productive conversation from most of you who comment on this video, I’ve chosen to agitate and troll.
      In response to your comment , I understand far more what he was going for in the aftermath, and I still feel the same way about an Englishman commenting on what happens in our backyard. And I’m standing on that.

      @@StiloReacts I went through the whole video and whole heartedly understand why you felt how you did, you basically told us. I am not blaming you for your reaction. Like I said. I have witnessed that struggle first hand and its something that has always saddened me.
      I am definitely not trying to argue and meant my comment as a productive one and how I interpreted the lyric.
      As for the last portion, everyone is entitled to feel how they feel. Only thing I want to kind of point out is I think everyone is guilty of looking on the surface of something in another area they know nothing about and speak on those things. Its human nature to be judgemental.
      I think if you had watched the video along with the song on your first reaction you might have felt less the way you did though. It would have put it into context for you. Did you get a chance to do so if I may ask?

    They were making a sign of the times. The commentary on black America being fetishised while simultaneously being incarcerated for profit is relevant to the conversation. The entire song is filled with statements calling attention to the sins of the modern age. Hence the line 'modernity has failed us.' Cmon man. You're being a bit rash in deciding that this song is saying something negative about black people when it very clearly is holding up the continued oppression of black people as a definite example of modern society's failings. They are on your side, dude. They may not be black or from America, but you don't need to be black or American or do months to years of research to understand something is fucking wrong with what's being done to black people in America. The song isn't there to offer solutions. It's there to point out hypocrisy and highlight problems that are far from being solved.

    • @StiloReacts
      @StiloReacts  ปีที่แล้ว

      Idc what he wants to comment on, as I cannot police what he says… free to express however I am free to say I am offended and I remain offended. He has no business speaking on our issues as an English white man. Nothing you can say that will change my stance.

    • @OMNIhydra1
      @OMNIhydra1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @StiloReacts listen dude, shutting down the conversation because the person speaking is white isn't helping anything. If you want this problem to actually get fixed, you need other people willing to stand up with your community. That means you're gonna have to accept that there will be people of other skin tones trying to express that this shit is fucked up in an effort to convince other white people to stop being so apathetic about the problem. I get that this is offensive. How could it not be? Innocent people are fucking dead. That should offend everyone. That's why those lines are in the song. They're trying to shake the listener into actually fucking doing something about it. Instead of getting mad at the problem, though, you're getting mad at the messenger. Someone genuinely wants to help and you're telling them to shut up and do less to try and solve the issue. They're apparently not even allowed to verbalize that they think the problem is a problem. In what world does that lead to positive change? Telling the only people outside the community most affected by these problems that actually want to help to shut up and stop trying to help is only going to leave that community more isolated and more vulnerable. You don't fix societal problems by silencing any discussion of those problems. That's how they fester and get worse over the course of decades.

    Haha, I'm a huge fan of theirs but I also reacted the same at first because the "suffocate the black men" caught me VERY off guard. The video definitely puts it into a better perspective, and it's crazy but not surprising how relevant this song still is in 2021.... humanity needs to do better. This is one of my top 5 songs by them honestly. Overall, I don't think you should find this insensitive in my opinion - as an Arab woman myself, I found the lyrics realistic and important... they talk about what's happening to us as well (surprise, black Americans are not the only minority to exist) so honestly I respect your views, but I don't agree with them as a POC myself. 🤷🏻‍♀️

    • @StiloReacts

      I mean I wasn't really expecting anybody to agree with me. I said it to have a difference of opinion. No, Black Americans aren't the only minority to exist, but many times we stand alone without any allies and have to take it upon ourselves to defend ourselves. It may not be as insensitive as I thought initially, but that doesn't mean how I FEEL about it is invalid.
