Yes the importer plants a few youtube vids a couple of years ago and youngsters and the internet being what they are the next thing you know its the only surface lure that will catch whiting. The thing about whiting on surface lures is that they seem to respond to a very aggressive surface disturbance the best. I can get more than some of my mates get with their sugarpens when I use a proper cup faced popper that creates a huge "bloop" when you stab the rod tip. If theres any wind the difference becomes even more magnified because the poiny nose on a sugarpen just doesn't doesnt have enough water resistance so the lure gets"lost" in all the surface chop. And I dont have to fit a secondary lure in the form of "assist" hooks for the fish to strike at (not the lure) either. I get the fish to stike the lure (with trebles) and my hookup rate is fine. The only thing assist hooks assist is the bank accounts of people that sell them. So there's my little rant over sugarpens. Yes you catch fish on them. Is there anything special about them?. Not in my experience fishing with some of my customers. You have to be really careful drawing conclusions about any aspect of fishing from what you see on the net. Every week serving customers I have to correct absolute dis information in their heads because theyve been on the net.
Hi there, I wonder how you would go on those yabby banks that are about 600 metres before the Jerseyville bridge on western side, also good banks in that shallow section up from the trawlers on eastern side..
Good stuff mate! Congratulations on ticking off some new species on topwater. Surface fishing is the most addictive way to fish by far. A little advice...from my experience, you get better footage of topwater action from a kayak if you use a headmount instead of the chest mount. Your hands and the rod/reel obscure too much of the screen when you are seated and you lose a lot of the action. Great to see you keeping it reel 👍

Youre right about the hype bit. You dont need expensive jap lures to catch fish. Surface lures are the least sophisticated of all lures in terms of their action and function. This is what we call in the trade an "internet lure". Its actually not as versatile as a proper popper. Because it doesnt create as much noise as a popper its less effective if there is a fair degree of wind. So yes you will catch fish on it but there's plenty of other cheaper lures that will work as well or better. Ive taken two of my customers fishing and both days ive caught more than them with the original rebel popper that started the surface lure craze for whiting.

Yeah so I don’t really have the right set up for longer casts yet. Reelistic fishing though haha not everyone has the right gear, but you can still catch some fish. I’m keen though to upgrade some of my gear
Long casts definetly the key, particularly for consistency with surface fishing. Try 4lb braid and a slim knot.also have the lure dangling 1-1.5m from the rod tip on casting, not 1ft💪

hi all sugapen lures are very expensive i hear tailor like them and are prone to biting them off
Great lure but the price of these has been going up in recent years. Can find similiar stuff at better price points now.
I don’t find sugarpens catch the numbers but I get better quality fish on them
