    Last night epitomized the pens current situation. Nostalgia above all. Tampa traded Stamkos, they didnt sign him to a long contract and hold hands and sing a friggin song. They made a smart business decision. The fans shouldnt complain because it seems to me the majority wanted this throughout the last five years.

      This is so true. When Hextall didn't want to resign Letang and Malkin, I remember reading some comments made by angry fans who said they want them to retire in Pittsburgh, even if it means no more cups during their careers. Well, I guess people should be careful what they wish for.

      You know they have literally tried different systems right? last night it was a 1-2-2....the players keep making silly mistakes...whether it is Crosby, eller, malkin, letang, karlsson...you name it...the system has been altered throughout the last half of last year and the start of this year....Sullivan is trying different things....in fact he went with a Defence first approach yesterday to minimize mistakes and play the defensive side to create offence.....I'm not saying you don't have a point...I'm saying that your point has some inaccuracies.

    Mentioning about players who “don’t belong in the NHL”…all the guys minus St Ivany that you mentioned were all better players until they came to Pittsburgh, along with a long list of other players in the past 5 years. Sully no longer knows how to get the best out of his players anymore.

      @maczed31 I was more referring to the defensemen Karlsson (101 pts on an awful San Jose team), Ryan Graves, but other players include Reilly Smith, Noel Acciari, Matt Nieto, all did better with their respective teams until they came to Pittsburgh. Bunting, Hayes, and Glass were all well with the top 12 on their past teams, just had down years so that’s not a comparable situation.

      @@Jgardonis Karlsson had 4 below average years before his 101 point season....he is actually performing more like the 4-5 years before that 101 pt season...which can make one think the 101 point year was an anomaly.
      Noel Acciari is playing consistent as he did in Toronto.
      Reilly Smith did underperform. Matt Nieto didn't play in Pittsburgh, but he wasn't a good player before. Hayes has been on a descent for the last 3 years. Why two teams made him expendable. Bunting played 2 good years in Toronto...since then he has been moved from 1st line to 4th line on all the teams he has been on (Toronto, Carolina and Pittsburgh).
      Not to invalidate your point, because I'm sure there is some truth there...but I don't find it entirely accurate.

    • @Jgardonis
      @Jgardonis ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      @ fair enough about Karlsson. Again he was on bad San Jose teams. Graves was respectably decent on other teams until he was terrible in Pittsburgh last year. Accari and Nieto’s points per game stats were all better on other teams until they came to Pittsburgh even if they were smaller sample sizes. Also Gryzelyk was better with the Bruins. I know he didn’t have a good year last year but he’s in the unplayable territory right now. You’re right about Kevin Hayes being not good on other teams. But to me, the last couple of years there seems to be a pattern where guys just don’t work out when they come to Pittsburgh. Is it because they aren’t any good any more? Maybe. Bad fits here? Possibly. But it’s the coach’s job to adjust his system to the players he has and I just don’t see him willing to do it. Sully is a great coach. He just might not be the right guy for this group anymore.

  • @wekkankq6704
    @wekkankq6704 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

    Grzelcyk is a third-pair guy at best. Graves, I don't know what his deal is. Karlsson, every time I watched him in the past, plays a version of "Matador" defense that has to be covered up by another stronger D man who understands the defensive side of the game. Then you have some minor-league-level guys shuttling in and out of the lineup. I understand that you can get value sometimes from a minor leaguer stepping up and stepping in, and the game clicks for them, but again, they need a steady partner to help shepherd them through things at times. Graves is still a lost lamb and hardly a steady Shepperd. A disconnect is going on, and it has been there for some time. The message is falling on deaf ears; the stars are aging out, but they still manage to be the highlight, and I admire them for that. Settle in fans for a long season. There is a little too much to salvage with a quick fix. Fire the coach, and the issues will still remain, but that is always an option. The team is in the twilight, and it'll only get darker in the near future.

    Replacing Erik Karlsson and Matt Grzelcyk would improve the defense by addition by subtraction. Gryzelcyk can be waived and replaced with Shea or Aho. But Karlsson isn't going anywhere, so there is no fix for that other than to wait another year for his bloated contract to expire. A change in system though will help Letang, Pettersson and Graves and maybe St Ivany. So a coaching change would at least help some.

    DK - I guess I can just look it up but since you’re on the inside most of the time maybe you’ll have a better answer than what I can find on the internet - but do NHL teams have any (or at all) cognitive training during the season ? like I know drills during practice & working on the powerplay(looks 200% better than last year’s) & on penalty kill (looks great) & 3on3, etc. are paramount . but how often do they use practice time for making the right decisions with or without the puck in a more detailed or should I say it - analytic approach while at practice or even actually off the ice .
    or do more teams do it more than others ? I think that’s the major problem with our favorite team …
    even one of the greatest players in hockey history (so far this year )
    I’m thinking … “like why’d he do that ?!” - & of course most of the others (defenseman mostly)
    there’s so many tools at these guys’ disposal compared to the Mario Days - I’m thinking a more perspicacious training is in dire need for this team WHOLESALE

    It’s embarrassing at this point how you keep defending Sullivan. He has a hand in players brought in by Dubas. If every D man can’t play defense, and that’s what happening to experienced D men, then it’s on the coach

      The thing is Sullivan preaches hockey that’s positional sound and using a stick, not taking the body or clearing the crease, among other things to get the puck out of the zone. That’s tough to do for a lot of D men. I think another defensive approach would be more beneficial

      It's 'embarrassing' to express a view that might be different than yours? Do enlighten me about this, please. - Dejan
