  • Basic get start guide for KiCad. This tutorial is enough to get you going. I am not a kiCad professional.
    One more thing about the footprints. Be sure to keep in mind the polarity of your devices. When I was talking about the microphone you want to make sure that the pins and position of the pins match the polarity of the microphone. For the silkscreen and the circle tool, make sure you check the radius as kiCad handles it as the center point and a point on the circumference.

    Very good tutorial and a good starting point for a novice like me. I like the tutor stumbling a little and experience program flaws. A lot easier to learn from that compared to quick polished tutorials. Thx!!

    A good introduction. A bit of feedback: the microphone footprint circle was, as you noticed, huge -- because the diameter was specified on the mechanical drawings, and you set that dimension as the radius.

      I just did a test; the coordinates specified in the dialog are the centre (which is obvious) and a point on the circumference (which is not, unless you maintain it in line with the CL axes). So, if you have the centre at (0,0) and one point at (1,0) then the radius is 1; but if the point is at (1,1) the radius is sqrt(2).

    Hi. Very nice tutorial, clear and at the right pace... and no music - great!. Like you I am new to pcb design software and am just getting started on KiCAD.
    I can make a circuit symbol and component footprint in KiCAD and I can make a 3D model in Wings3D. But how do you bring these three things together to make them all into one 3D component for KiCAD? Any help at all would be much appreciated.

      Jim Taylor I never messed around with the 3d models, I assume that when you are editing the PCB footprint you can import them there

    What i do is use the measurements shown in the status bar at the bottom screen from correct placement. Say you want to put two pins at 2.54 mm from each other, than just set the grid size at 50mil or 1.27mm, put the first pin at one dot left to the center on the X axis, put 2nd pin at the first dot at the right side on X axis, than you can peacefully draw the circle from the center and set the radius up to any point on X axis you like, very convenient.
    I have switched to KiCAD from Proteus (for its open source ecosystem of-course) but these small nitty gritty things were lot easier on proteus (e.g. after placing a component, you don't need to click on the wire button to activate the wire drawing mode, click a pin and it automatically draws wire).
    Too bad they don't focus on the open source community.

    how do you move the ref des silk screen of each component?

    Nice tips in there, thanks!
    But, for god's sake, please learn (and teach) using the keyboard shortcuts... saves a whole lot of mouse-moves ... especially for the wiring ... ("W")
    also a whole lot too much wire action, you can just place a component pin on an existing wire or existing pin to connect them ...
    As for the Mic footprint, you've used the diameter as the radius ... a sanity check of the size by comparing the size of the OpAmp chip (which also has a pin pitch of 2.54mm) would quickly make that clear ...

    kicad is a broken mess in my opinion it has shit default design rules and is buggy as hell even though it is not a full release it should be more stable also a pain in the neck to use as it doesnt follow standard cad/cam software rules also grabs my mouse and wont let go without ALT+F4 goddamnit i dont want it to grab my mouse

      Yeah I agree that it is not the best software but of the free ones with no size limits it does pretty good. Hopefully it will get better in the future, I think it has been in development for 4 years now.

    Im having trouble trying to create a ca3046 tranny array. Would i be able to import a pinout image and add this to a custom component creation ?

      Adamski A. Its not complicated part. Just make it the way that I did for the schematic and then find the package you are using either pdip or soic
