Surah At-Tahrim Overview
Surah Name: At-Tahrim (The Prohibition)
Surah Number: 66
Total Verses: 12
Place of Revelation: Madinah
Key Themes:
Prohibition and Personal Matters:
The Surah begins by addressing a personal incident in the Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) life, where he made something lawful forbidden upon himself to please his wives. Allah corrects this by reminding him that only Allah has the authority to make something lawful or unlawful.
Arabic:
يَا أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ لِمَ تُحَرِّمُ مَا أَحَلَّ اللَّهُ لَكَ
Ya ayyuha’n-nabiyyu lima tuḥarrimu ma aḥalla Allahu lak
Translation: O Prophet, why do you prohibit [yourself from] what Allah has made lawful for you?
Warning to the Wives of the Prophet (PBUH):
The Surah addresses the Prophet’s wives, warning them to be mindful of their behavior. It emphasizes that, as wives of the Prophet (PBUH), they have a higher responsibility and must avoid behaviors that might displease Allah.
Arabic:
إِن تَتُوبَآ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ فَقَدْ صَغَتْ قُلُوبُكُمَا
In tatuba ila Allah faqad saghat quloobukuma
Translation: If you two [wives] repent to Allah, [it is best], for your hearts have deviated.
Believers and Their Families:
Believers are instructed to protect themselves and their families from the punishment of Hellfire. They are reminded to instill righteousness in their homes, as every individual will be held accountable.
Arabic:
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا قُوا أَنفُسَكُمْ وَأَهْلِيكُمْ نَارًا
Ya ayyuha allatheena amanoo qoo anfusakum wa ahleekum nar
Translation: O you who have believed, protect yourselves and your families from a Fire...
The Hypocrites and Disbelievers:
The Surah warns the hypocrites and disbelievers about the severe punishment awaiting them in the Hereafter. Their lack of sincerity and rejection of faith will lead them to a terrible fate unless they repent and turn back to Allah.
Arabic:
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا لَا تَعْتَذِرُوا الْيَوْمَ
Ya ayyuha allatheena kafaroo la taʿtadhiru al-yawm
Translation: O disbelievers, make no excuses this Day.
Examples of Righteous and Unrighteous Women:
Allah provides two contrasting examples:
The wife of Prophet Noah and the wife of Prophet Lot: These women were married to prophets but betrayed their husbands by rejecting the truth. Their husbands could not save them from Allah’s punishment.
The wife of Pharaoh and Maryam (Mary): These women are praised for their faith and righteousness. The wife of Pharaoh, despite her husband’s tyranny, believed in Allah, and Maryam is honored for her chastity and dedication.
Arabic:
ضَرَبَ اللَّهُ مَثَلًا لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا
Daraba Allahu mathalan lil-latheena kafaroo
Translation: Allah presents an example of those who disbelieved...
Encouragement to Repent:
The Surah encourages the believers to turn to Allah in sincere repentance (Tawbah). Allah promises to forgive those who repent and correct their ways, encouraging people to strive for purity and righteousness.
Arabic:
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا تُوبُوا إِلَى اللَّهِ تَوْبَةً نَّصُوحًا
Ya ayyuha allatheena amanoo tooboo ila Allah tawbatan nasooha
Translation: O you who have believed, repent to Allah with sincere repentance.
Main Message:
Surah At-Tahrim discusses personal matters involving the Prophet (PBUH), family responsibilities, and warnings to the disbelievers and hypocrites.
It highlights the importance of sincere repentance, faith, and righteousness, and provides examples of both righteous and unrighteous women to emphasize that faith is an individual responsibility.
The Surah also emphasizes that no relationship, even marriage to a prophet, can save a person from Allah’s punishment if they do not believe.
