    Good job fixing it!
    I've bought the same model from Craigslist recently for $15 in "for parts or repair" condition, it also looked pretty ugly with some stickers and dirt on it. After cleanup and fixing it's one of my favorite receivers now. I had to replace one transistor and capacitor, they've been visibly blown up, probably as a result of using a power supply with reversed polarity. Kit of transistors and capacitors from Amazon are very good, they would have a part you need in most cases and they cost pretty cheap.

    I had a DX-440 back in the 1990’s. Loved it.
    I am waiting delivery of a DX-390. I purchased it last week. 😁
    It’s cool to see these CAN actually be repaired.

    I have a DX-440 bought back in the 1990’s. Love it. I was doing my PhD in a little town, Moscow, ID. About 4 hours from Seattle. We did not have the internet at that time and the only way to get updated news from my country, Brazil, was by radio. I am Still having fun with it. By the way, nice repair. Say hello to Mapple.

    NTE457 is a suggested equivalent for the obsolete MPF102.
    Small tech tip: I have that solder sucker among my collection of de-soldering tools. I have sawn off the 'thumb guide' -- for want of a better term -- so that I can recharge the sucker by pressing it against my other hand, chest or upper arm. Not having to move my thumb off the tool and guide it onto the plunger makes the whole process of de-soldering much faster, especially when there's a lot of it to do.

    I have two of the Sangean version of that radio that I bought new many years ago. Both are in mint condition but one stopped receiving FM a long time ago. I put a loop antenna up a few months ago and haven't gotten the chance to try that connected to either of these radios but when I do I'll be sure to disconnect when I'm done. I keep one next to the bed and often listen if I wake up in the middle of the night especially if there's some breaking story going on. I've always wished the light could be left on or stayed on for a time. That would make tuning around the bands a lot easier in the dark.

    Nice Radio. I have the Universum branded model that doesn't have the bandwith switch.
    The substitute book from the former german company "Jaeger Elektronik" lists BF244, BF245, BFS72, 2N3823, 2N5245 and "++" which means, that there are many more suiteable substitutes. So I think using a different type instead of the MPF102 might not be very critical.

  • @Pootycat8359
    @Pootycat8359 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The MPF 102 is the most common, generic, garden-variety FET there is. You can find them, as well as just about any component, on Ebay. By the way, they're NOT particularly static sensitive. Only MOS semiconductors require special handling..

  • @bstube6535
    @bstube6535 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for the tech tip, it cured my ATS 803. My question is whether you have employed any preventive mods, such as a pair of back to back diodes? Absent that, would a simple wire clip from the negative battery terminal serve as a safe discharge point from my hand before touching the antenna?

    • @SevenFortyOne
      @SevenFortyOne  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't add any protection diodes but should have. I'm not sure of a ground will help here or not but it probably wouldn't hurt

    • @Pootycat8359
      @Pootycat8359 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SevenFortyOne If you connect an earth ground to the radio ground, that will improve reception, especially on the lower frequencies. But it will increase the possibility of static damage. Without such a ground, the radio is connected to earth ground through stray capacitance, which presents a high Z to low frequencies, and is essentially infinite, for DC. With an actual ground, the path for the static discharge is low Z, so, ZAP!

    • @Pootycat8359
      @Pootycat8359 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SevenFortyOne Be sure to add the diodes. And if you add an RF choke in parallel with them, that's even better. Choose an inductor with a reactance of a few thousand ohms, at the lowest freq. you'll be using.

    I bought one of these from a Radio junk sale recently,mine is called the Saisho SW 5000 of which is acturly the DX-440,except mine was made in Taiwan,hence the name Saisho.Supriseingly it acturly works very well compared to my other portable radios arround the same age.But I have one very bad problem with it.The front panel that houses the push buttons is badly corroded.It looks like an Aluminum metal plate.You would think they would have used plastic,but no its metal.I have tried lightly sanding it but it is badly pitted,and looks real bad.So how would I repair or replace this panel? Im thinking maybe have a vinyl plastic transfer made and numbers/names printed on then sticking it on top. Any advice would be very wellcomed thanks.

      Interesting...I've never heard of the Saishow version before. Anyway, I don't know if this would work or not but I saw a local motorcycle restoration guy rubbing household aluminum foil on a nickel plated motorcycle frame to restore the finish - this might work for your faceplate. I'd be sure to test it first to see what happens.

    Well I found a transistor here in Costa Mesa at MarVac Electronics. It was not the Radio Shack MFP 102 but they cross referenced it to a NTE Electronics Inc NET 451. It looked just like the one in the Q 115 spot and fit right in. I did it just as you did and was very careful with everything and did it just as you did except I forgot to clip off the tails on the transistor. i put it back together with no problems, I installed the batteries and the clock came on for about 3 sec and then it went off and the radio never came on at all. i took it apart and clipped the tails, which were now bent over, This did not work.
    to bad, I bought the radio new and only used it a couple of times and has been packed away for 30 years. Very nice looking but no juice. Do you think I shorted it out ? maybe try a new transistor? they still have 2 in stock?
    or do you have a

    • @SevenFortyOne
      @SevenFortyOne  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yup - you very likely shorted something out in another circuit on the board below and damaged more components. I doubt replacing the transistor will help - something else is probably wrong now but I wouldn't know for certain without checking it out in person. If you are looking for something new, check out the radios from Tecsun - they are usually pretty good.
