Great video from the 60's. Spent 17 summers on these beaches with my family while camping at Buxton Campground..back then, no hot water or electricity in the camp. We caught more flounder and blues from the beach with lite tacke than I could even begin to guess...loved watching this; many great memories. The outer banks have changed a lot; the fishing isn't what it used to be for sure but still beautiful...nice post!
This brings back good memories for me too. My family visited the Outer Banks for several summers back from late '60s to mid '70s. Stayed up around Kitty Hawk and visited Hatteras a few times. Great fishing back then! Can remember many days on piers and along surf catching so many fish it was not even funny! Fondest memory was a "flounder blitz" along beach in front of Hatteras lighthouse during Thanksgiving week, 1973. Everyone was hauling in nice flounder...affraid we will never see that again.
Damn, I so wish I could go back in time and see Hatteras Island at that time. I can only imagine the beauty of the place unspoiled by over development and over-regulation. Must have been heaven on Earth. Still love it today, but back in those days....damn.
I absolutely adore this video, cape hatteras holds a special place in my heart, I was wondering if i could use this footage for a music video, for my music :)
Must have been early 60's...the other film of the ferry, if that was Oregon Inlet, it would have been pre-1963, as that was when the Bonner bridge opened. I believe the temporary bridge shown was at Buxton after the Ash Wednesday storm in 1962. As for the Cape Point campground, still cold showers and no electricity. Except that now apparently the NPS wants to let it drown rather than drain the water off as they have done for many many years...and you can't even walk to the beach pretty much the whole time it is open due to the stupid birds...
Wesley, Thanks for commenting. I think the ferry video is from the Ocracoke Ferry. I agree with your assessment on the bridge being the one near Buxton. The time-frame of 63 is on target.. Mom and Dad met and married in 63', and this trip might have been a sort of initiation/intro to the group for Dad as the new son in law - My Grandad did not date and label his films all the time with much detail. Last week just visited Buxton again for the first time in 10 years. Feeling heavy...Damned NPS and their scapegoat birds!!

the natural film burns just can not be produced by modern cameras, truly amazing
Love it. Still stay at the tower circle a couple times a year, I’ll never look at it the same.

@bcask 61 - I feel the same way. It's why I felt like I had to put this out there.

@Belvedere3834spd Thanks for the comment. If the Park Service does not ban us from the beach forever, we may see it again someday I pray.
