Murph Gribble wasn't playing clawhammer, he played in a rolling three-finger up-picked style. Albert York is accompanying on guitar, though he never changes chords on this tune.

Better, more complete and extensive recordings of the Lusk, York, Gribble band are now available at this wonderful web site box5770.temp.domains/~gribble1/ along with abundant documentation and history about them and their families. Murph Gripple is clearly playing the banjo 3-finger style in banjo rolls. This is what banjoist and folklorist Stu Jameson who made the recordings said at the time, and whom I have discussed this with directly, and what all the literature on this says. This band is really the only extant Black string band we know of. Frazier and Patterson who are on the other side of the original Rounder Recording did not know each other until John Work III put them together for a celebration of Fisk University's anniversary,

There's nothing at that link anymore I'm afraid, nor was it saved to the Wayback Machine. Is there anywhere else this material can now be found?
