      Note the look of approval from Wellington, Wellington was from a family of poets in Ireland, bankrupted his family sent him to military school to avoid paying for his education. Against all odds he excelled and the rest is history.

    A shilling that five pence in modern money. Not much for soldiering. But then a loaf of bread and a pound of tea were a tiny fraction of what they are now. Our purses and wallets, would make us very rich indeed, then.

    • @BufusTurbo92
      @BufusTurbo92 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      According to the inflation calculator on the bank of england's website, 1£ in 1804 is around 83£ today. Being that a shilling was the twentieth part of a pound, a shilling today would be 4,15£, and 1 shilling was the daily pay so monthly wages would be around 125£ in today's money give or take. To that you must add the initial bounty of £23/17/6d (in 1812).

    • @thomasvanner1170
      @thomasvanner1170 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      A shilling is 12 pence. So if this is set in 1804 and is been over 2 centuries of inflation how has it become equivalent of 5 pence today. I understand that the decimalisation of the pound occurred in 1971 and that may have Impacted values. But how did you reach the figure of 5 pence?

    • @julianaylor4351
      @julianaylor4351 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@thomasvanner1170 A shilling was made the equivalent of five pence in the literature published at the time of decimalisation. No idea why they decided that. I learned that at school, when I was 10. The process of decimalisation was utterly crazy like quantum physics. Another example 50p is half of a modern pound, but 10 shilling notes, also known as ten bob notes were worth 50p, yet a guinea was deemed to be around one pound ten pence. Then there's the decimal half pences, of which I lost five pence worth, before they were scrapped. Another one, the old sixpence was worth two and a half pence. 😆

      @@BufusTurbo92 But then you must deduct all the cost the soldier owed to the army and were docked from his pay and not much was left according to the books (I seem to remember something around £7 at the end). The bounty was promised upon recruitment, but as soon as the men were sworn in, they had to sign a paper that the bounty was spent in ale, food and lodgement on the way to training camp (mentioned in the book 'Sharpe's Regiment)... so one did not get rich in the King's service
