    I believe it. I'm an RN and I see what physicians go through. When I was working at Walmart, I would place the nursing profession on a pedestal. Now that I'm in the field, I realize that there cons: burn out, high responsibility, politics and the feeling that were not getting properly compensated for the amount of responsibility were dealing with. Naturally, I feel as though that physicians deal with the same stressors but on an greater level. It's crazy how most folks only see the glamour on the outside without realizing that the world isnt perfect...

    Peace be to you Dr.Webb! This was very insightful! I HAVE met a number of doctors who have regrets abouts becoming MDs. However, I really think that it had more to do with their situations (e.g. divorce, practices losing money, loss of autonomy, over-work, ennui, etc.).

    I guess you can't say anything else than polític play big role here in Iceland where I live where we only have public system. You can have a private office but need to make a contract to the social insurance agency and we co pay the same if the doctors have private office or work straight for the hospital system. But also the education is free. You pay around $600 registration fee a year for whatever you are learning in uni. And you go straight into the medicine as its like the combined degree you can take in few schools in states. B. Sc. Included in those 6 years. And then one candidate year and you are a doctor. Then of course you need to take the specialization. But the downside is there is a test and only 48 out of 300get in and this test is much built on the high school material. So if you after few years out of high school want to become a doctor going out of the country and take out huge school loans is the downside of our system. But can't complain about free education and little copay when going to doctors and of couse the EU works when beeing in another country is huge benefits getting sick abroad. But if you want to be a doctor and makes that decision at age 25 no way to make that happen in Iceland. But overall with my multiply degrees, all free i cant complain when you have free uni. And competitive salary to doctors here in Iceland as in public system's all over Europe. And doctors dont have it bad. Unless they dont know how to take care of their good salary.

      Just being able to understand that you can't be an overly dependent or needy person while he's in this career in general. Medicine is like a mistress essentially. His attention is going to be divided and it shouldn't mean that he's dismissive of everything you say but it is going to mean that he just won't have time for a lot of stuff you might find important like a sibling birthday, ect. Have little check in points every month about how each of you can work on your relationship. Prepare a meal if you can just because you love him not because he expects it because you're a woman.. Make his lunch nutritious. Send him an encouraging text everyday. It's the little things that add up

    • @weekendgetawaywithme
      @weekendgetawaywithme 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, no, no. Medicine is the wife. So I guess that would make me the mistress. I find comfort in that for many reasons. He looks soOoo good on paper and even better in person. I just want to make him as happy as he makes me. Thanks for your suggestions!!

    • @xxxXKPoPXxxx
      @xxxXKPoPXxxx 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@weekendgetawaywithme I suppose if you've only started dating..yeah medicine is the wife. But I would find it alarming if you're a year in the relationship and it still feels that way. If you're super independent and love alone time, I suppose it doesn't matter as much. I'm like that and I would hate weekly dates lol

      From my experience, no. You generally want to do things in high school that will look good for what major(s) you want to do in college. For example, if you want to do computer science, doing STEM extracurricular in high school is great. Since there's no real "pre-med" major in college, doing pre-med related things doesn't really help per se (although showing passion for something is always great). You'll have a lot of time in college to pursue medical-related activities, so don't worry about it too much in high school.

    Hi dr.webb
    So I wanna ask you a question I currently study med school in turkey
    My story is a bit different .Most of med schools in here don't teach medicine in english .. so we study medicine in turkish language .. it is so difficult for me .we study from 8.30 to 17.20 daily, 8 hrs of lesson with tons of slides to recover. I madly study and barely have a time for anything else.And Currently losing hope I don't understand so much in class or when i read because I am somalian girl and turkish lang. Is not my first language... so in some point I try to study only to pass for exams focusing on points that the teacher repeats the most ..
    I feel so bad on how I am studying and I feel it is not the way to became a good doctor.
    What do you think about that point
    + I am considering to switch into another field. Sorry about this long qs but I need an answer about your experience :)

    Thank you! After hearing this, I think I will personally be better suited as to go towards the PA. Hopefully I can find a video that will address the cons of being a PA b/c I always hear about the pros... That way I can make a good decision on which field will better suit me. Thanks again! This was much needed. & if anyone out there know of a video or website that will give factual cons (pros also) of the PA field, please let me know!

    I'm an RN also and agree with all the stressors faced by medical professionals. The most stress creating stressor is that you are constantly being watched and judged. Doctors and nurses are human beings with feelings that can be disrupted by just ONE judgmental person.

      What stress? Doctors sit in a comfortable chair, talk to people for 5 min and then write something on a paper. “Prescription”. What stress are you talking about?

  • @mizterjay2
    @mizterjay2 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hmm that may be true but no one thinks about these things before becoming a doctor. It’s a spontaneous thought, like a desire deep down. If these thoughts are going to deter someone from becoming a doctor, then they’re better off not taking the course. I personally think that we doctors complain a lot. There are worse downsides in almost every other profession. If someone wants to make big money there are always fields like corporate finances and stuff. So if after becoming a doctor you realise that your passion was money and not medicine there’s always time and scope to change professions and become a stock trader or banker or something, suicides are uncalled for..please!!

      Yes, some schools are that way but require you to complete your degree before starting. Every school is different though. The courses that will prepare you for the MCAT include Gen Bio, Chem, Biochem, Org Chem, Physics, Humanities, etc. Check out this video here where I interviewed Lauren Siegel from the MCAT department at the AAMC. th-cam.com/video/WDjazQdB_XQ/w-d-xo.html

    is there a branch of the military that has minimal chance of being active duty or being deployed? I want to join and take advantage of the benefits but am terrified of being deployed because of my animals. I know it sounds silly but they are like my children. lol

    • @alangaldamez7468
      @alangaldamez7468 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kayla Ramos Hi you can actually get into the reserves in which ever military branch you wish to join. And you only have to go do your mos a whole week each month. I got my start with the military straight out of high school my mos is a 12m firefighter in the army reserves and it's the best choice I ever made. If being in the military is something you want to do with your life, then by all means do it. If spending time away, from your pets is an internal struggle for you, you can probably find someone, you trust to take care of them for a whole week. Hopefully I could help out if you have any more questions feel free to ask me.

    • @ThisIsCrazyGamer
      @ThisIsCrazyGamer 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The problem with reserves is you don’t get pretty much any of the benefits you’d get if you were active duty. You wouldn’t even get shool paid for unless you were active duty. It doesn’t make sense for them to give you free education if you only work one day a month

    Hey Dr. Webb,
    I'm having trouble deciding whether to go into medicine or dentistry at the moment and was wondering what your opinion of dentistry is. More of in the sense that if you could go back, which would you choose. I find orthopedic surgery absolutely fascinating, but having not actually lived the life of a surgeon, I can't tell whether I would get burnt out or not. I have heard dentistry is more laid back, but it is a lot more restrictive in the scope of practice.
    I appreciate the informative videos.

    This is no different than any other profession but the money side makes it more manageable otherwise people will not choose this path. Stress at the workplace applies to a lot of other professions which pay a lot less than what a doctor makes over time. I certainly appreciate the sacrifice out forth by doctors but they reap the rewards at the end.

    Hi Antonio,
    I want to go into pre med at USC to be an orthopedic surgeon. Another thing, I heard that you talked about the loss of autonomy but all of the surgeons and family friends who are surgeons that I know, either own their private practice or is head of a department. With a private practice, you can have your autonomy and reduce politics can't you? And why did you go into orthopedic surgery?

      Hi,
      Thanks for the comment and watching! Great questions! I may have misspoken or you may have misheard but doctors and surgeons have a lot of autonomy especially after being done with all your training. It's usually not related to the type of practice you are in. And I chose Ortho bc I loved the types of surgeries and how well patients did after surgery. I loved working with my hands and Ortho is very hands on. Good luck in your studies and let me know if you have any other questions!

    Hi Dr.Webb, great video - but there is a misconception about Engineers as well. We also have to go through almost 10 years of school and training before we can call ourself engineers. Five years of school and internship and another five years of training "Engineer in Training" under a professional engineer. So, it will be 10 years before we can register and call outself engineers. And as you said politics is part of any profession and at any organization.

    In general, I would think going to med school in an older age than those typical medical students is a big disadvantage. When will you graduate? When will you work; or not work " retire"? When will you buy a house? When will you pay it all kind of loans and mortgages with interests?
    I don't mean to disappoint anyone but this is reality. As years go by, it becomes more and more difficult and it's also difficult to step back once you're in. Let alone if something happens like medico-legal suitcase.

      Hi,
      Thanks for the comment and watching! Good point but not always true. A lot of medical schools like older/non traditional students who have life experience. The average age in my med school class was about 26/27 with the oldest being 46. Some disadvantages would be a cut in pay from your previous job, lost time with family which most people at an older age already have, and the transition from the workforce to classroom may be daunting to some.
