    An absolutely amazing overview on a truly underappreciated toy line. It seems almost insane to think anyone could find this cartoon offensive considering the OTT allowances given to kids today. Excellent job looking at the toy line and historical retrospect. Excellent video.

      It's amazing how people say this is an under-appreciated toy line and I completely agree with them! I actually think it was one of the best toy lines of the eighties!

      Kids better play with Rambo figures than using smartphones.

      The bigger figures were a bit pricey for us. At the same time I really don't see why this wasn't around longer.

    These take me back to Christmas of 86, I got a huge haul of these guys and vehicles, coupled with the karate kid figures and ring playset. It was a good year

    To be fair these toys never hurt anyone by themselves. Also what was up with the U.K. in the 80's. They changed "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" to "Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles". Also i had a plastic Rambo Knife toy and Bandana. I didn't lead go around killing cops or anything.

    Some of the best action figures of the 80s!! I remember watching the cartoon and then as fast as it came, it was gone. I still have both versions of Rambo and Colonel Trautman figures. I love them!!! They still look great even by today's standards. They were very detailed for their time.

    Here in Brazil it became a fever all these toys in the end of the 80's. I had both versions of Rambo, Cel. Trautman, Black Dragon, Snakebite and Sgt. Havoc. My old friends had other collection that was awesome to my childhood. Good video!

    Very well researched. I remember this figures and i loved the vehicles. I had Rambo and the main bad guy. Had a lot of fun playing with them. Could you do a documentary on Dick Tracy? those figures are so ugly that they are great lol.

    Argentine here. It's true about the popularity of later releases. They were all the rage back in 90/91. Expensive as hell too, I only managed to get one of the second production for my 10th birthday in 91, that Jackson dude, which was a couple bucks cheaper, I imagine because it wasn't as popular as the other characters perhaps?
    Dunno, but man how I envied my above average friend that had the plain Rambo, the commando Rambo, the Rambo with parachute (that was a real treat to use with it really working little parachute)... and more vehicles and "accessories" than I could count... Ah the memories.

    Thanks for another great vintage toy review. I was a big fan of the Rambo movies and I had a lot of the figures from this line including the helicopter. They were made for older kids and not the younger ones, if they had been marketed that way they might not have been so much controversy, there was a lot of that in 1980’s Reagan America. These Rambo and the Centurions were the last figures I bought in the 80’s because I was getting older and starting high school and I was growing out of toys, I didn’t start collecting again Star Wars was re-released in the late 90’s, but I kept a lot of my figures and I still have the Rambo First Blood Pt. 2 and Trautman figures.

  • @TeslaDRay
    @TeslaDRay 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    one of the greatest lines. you can basically tell firepower rambo and standard rambo were based on the first two movies, as was trautman. general warhawk and sgt havoc were based on the two main villains in the 2nd movie, as was the girl was loosely based on the girl from 2.

    • @usamazahid3882
      @usamazahid3882 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, but the charisma of the character of General Warhawk, was influenced by Adolf Hitler, who was also portrayed by Steven Berkoff in Herman Wouk's War and Remembrance Miniseries in 1988. Havoc's physique is based of Yushin from the second film, as well as their fight in the chopper.

      was i wrote this 5 years ago? Oh anyway yeah i think i read that too. but even as a 6 year old back then, i could tell who the 2 villains were based on. all of us then-kids could lol.

    Great video. I was 10 when First Blood was released and by the the time Rambo: First Blood 2 came out, every kid in my area had a Rambo knife with the unscrew-able compass on the handle. These films also inspired us to try survival skills from Lofty Wiseman’s book, camping in the woods & having a great time.

    Excellent video! I got the Rambo action figure for x-mas back in the day (the first blood pt. 2 version); and to me, its still amazing how detailed this figure was (the accessories, the scars, the jade necklace) by 1980's standards. The playset and some of the vehicles were so wickedly cool, but unfortunately never got the chance to play with any of those. That Rambo figure was one of my fave toys back then; aside from the limited articulation on its arms, it was pretty awesome.

    Ive still got a few of my old rambo toys, and i scored an unopened rambo figure off ebay.
    I think another issue that brought these down was that they were too big to play with the GI Joe line. I believe if they were the same size it would have gained lot more popularity.

    Great review!! Never had any of these, nor had any of my friends. I wish they had gone with making Rambo a Joe, I know none of this would have appeared in the GI Joe line, but all of that in this toy line would have made a great sub-team in GI Joe. And those villains would make great Dreadnoks and Cobra agents, well maybe not those last two...Doctor Hyde and Trap-jaw..errr I mean X-ray. Later!

    I grew up in America in the 70's and 80's. I do not remember anyone complaining about this cartoon or toys over here. I personally believe it simply lost to Gi Joe who had a jump on rambo here. The Gi Joe toy and cartoon lines were more popular here in the US. There were more characters and better writing in Gi Joe. Not saying that the Rambo toys were bad at all,I just picked up a few carded figures. But as an American child,Gi Joe was a more fleshed out universe and more interesting to collect. Just my memories of a far better time without political correctness or as we know it as,bullying with manners.

So sharp my older brother pretended to slit my throat with it and ended up giving me a nasty scratch on my forehead. Troutman had the best weapon set including an m60 with ammo belts, an M16, Colt 1911 and the Kbar. Very cool figure. Probably the best one from that line.

    Was the Sergeant Havoc character based off of Yushin (big russian baddie from First Blood Part 2)? They look a lot alike, are both Sergeants, and maybe cause he was such a memorable bad guy in the movie he was in. Never had him, but did have Rambo, Trautman, Mad Dog and the Savage Cycle. Also, the Firepower Rambo is wearing the necklace he took from Co Bao after she died.

    Good review. While I think the cartoon could be cheesy (especially with Rambo doing super human things at times, like righting cars that were flipped over), the show was good. Sometimes Warhawk reminded me of Miles Mayhem. The toyline was excellent, and I liked the vehicles.
    The one thing I have to disagree with you on, is the argument that the religious right were the ones who were pushing the "war toys are violent" narrative. While it's true that they did this, at times, the group's main gripe was with was "evil/satanic" influences (in both toys and cartoons). They loved to whine about toylines/shows like MOTU, D&D, ETC. The left were the ones who mainly whined about "violent" toys (including Rambo, G.I. Joe, and plastic hand guns, machine guns, etc), although they also complained about D&D. Anti-war protestors were known to stand outside toy stores and hand out pamplets/lecture parents, and try to get toys banned.
    While I do think the idea of making a toyline/cartoon off an R-rated movie (like they also did with Police Academy), probably wasn't the best idea, most parents here were really not as offended. It was the whining activists who CLAIMED to represent the parents, and complained to toy companies, show producers, congress, etc.

    I rather liked the Rambo cartoon. In some ways it was way better than G. I. Joe, but it lacked the articulation by either Hasbro's G. I. Joe or even Galoob's The A-Team. Still, it had its good points. Had the John Rambo & Col. Trautman figures. A shame religious zealots were so ignorant that they do far more damage than the series they were protesting about.

    I think Rambo and other larger figures could have done well if they had a 3 3/4 line too, to interact with the Joes ARAH, AM Action Force in the UK, SW, and every other line in 3 3/4 scale. More imagination, more vehicles, playsets etc.

    I’m only now just realizing that in some of the art, Rambo is wielding a M60 machine gun with an RPG round inserted into the barrel. I reckon they didn’t have a knowledgeable artist on staff like Larry Hama.

    Didn't the Rambo figures take caps? You could load them in the back and set them off to emulate gunfire sounds.

      The Kenner Robocop figures had the caps that go in the back. That was a great toyline.

    I don't think you could sell these toys now days. People don't want there kids playing with toy guns or any violent toys now days. Didn't do me any harm.
