- Wang Hao's legacy stems from his superior backhand. Amazingly, he went to the Olympics 3 times and lost in the final. Had he won those elusive matches, his legacy would have been immortal. It's too bad!

I am not a fan of rpb it is weak its predictable mid back hand fall on opponent table did you see Olympic games between jpen ryu vs rpb wang hao ryu backhand stronger.current European champion dang qui rpb i still consider just an average.
@@titosarmiento8333 did you see games Wang Hao vs Ryu Seing Mein besides the one on Olympic games? Wang Hao was winning about 90 percent of games against Ryu, and that was almost the only time, when he losed. Wang Hao was only 20 and that was his first Olypic games. The result is compilation of Wang Hao's panic and the fact that Ryu probably demonstrated best performance in his life. But, statistics show that Wang Hao's style was more efficient

anatomically the backhand shot is spinny in various way and situations,
but should be unsteady, not speedy and hard to control directions.

It's not really hard to control... you add more wrist & flick & tricks if you have a good hit at the ball.
Otherwise you can hit it back quite safely.... like Xu Xin & Wang Hao do!

Wang Hao is unique in his ability to use the RPB. Unfortunately, this led to entire generations of new players trying blindly to emulate him but not succeeding in achieving nearly the same calibre of RPB use. The dangers of RPB is that, while it is great for the backhand offensive game, it is not the greatest for defense and also requires a great deal of attention. Often RPB penhold players focus so much on the backhand they lose all the benefits of a penhold game (short game and forehand attacks) just to stand in the middle and play like a shakehand player. As good as a RPB can be, it'll never anatomically be even comparable to a shakehand backhand. My opinion is that RPB is a nice trick to add to the penhold repertoire, but not overshadow the penhold style itself.
almost agree. but if we consider just backhand topspin and not the flat attack . rpb is even more anatomically comfortable than shakehand's attack.
and the part i agree the most is that the penholder must focus on the forehand , not the backhand to be succeed .after all penholder , is a penholder and his advantage is still forhand . rpb should have be just an spice .

I disagree strongly..the RVP is better than the 'traditional' (1 side of the raquet) penhold grip, and I tried every grip there is over THIRTY YEARS, and including (to me) the bazzare 'Danny Seemiller grip'. At 68, I finally 'found it' at the club level, and fortunately I still have quik footwork and fitness for my age. Wang Hao is my model AND the up and coming teenage French sensation Felix Lebrun, who at 17 has cracked the worlds top 10 with the RVP style.. That says something...

From my own experience I will say that in order to attack by reverse penhold backhand as well, one must have strong deltoid muscles, otherwise there will be frequent stretching of the shoulder.

Oh Sang-eun plays a defensive style.
His Blade and Rubber Setup are not the super OFFENSIVE type...but more of a 'CONTROL' set up. This way he can generate more Control and precision with his RPB and have a higher chance of putting pressure to the opponents with his RPB strokes. His RPB is also very spinny cos of the extra dwell time from the rubber to the ball thanks to his equipment 'CONTROL' setup.
RYU SEUNG MIN's super offensive setup is a CANNON....not as spinny as Wang Hao's slower set up...but man...once he unleashes his devastating Forehand...the Ball shoots like a Cannon ball to the horror of so many opponents!
My RPB is the 2nd best after Wang Hao's :D

RPB is potentially stronger because of that extra wrist flexibility one gets with penhold( same reason the penhold FH is stronger) however to be able to use this potential advantage one needs to develop the technique to bring the wrists into play. Most of us Penholders unconsciously do not use the wrists as much as we should.Also it takes time to learn to use the wrists without messing up your racket angle during the stroke.One clear disadvantage of RPB is defence . Blocking and chopping are not great.

Yes exactly! BH Block and chop are better with traditional penhold. So the challenge of penholder player is the agility to choose between RPB or traditional backhand as the ball moves quickly to you. It’s extra decision step in addition to decision on whether to use BH or FH, something that shakehander don’t bother. Wang Hao just ignore traditional penhold altogether and improve his RPB to an unsurpassed level

Wang Hao may not be the GOAT of all time, but to me he's one of the greatest, and his wonderful RVP style. Maybe the young teenage French sensation Felix Lebrun at 17 is the heir appearant, he just cracked the worlds top 10.
Penhold backhand is much stronger and much more flexible, but its harder to grasp it, not longer in time but harder on mental level, there are a lot of penholders whos backhand in low tier tt players just destroy you..
the real hard thing is trying to mix reverse penholder with the traditional backhand push, esentially what Ma lin did. I play this style and it's very hard to plan out your options ahead of time or make the correct choice between regular push and reverse penhold loop in a split second.

if you are talking specifically about physical strength then its clear that RPB is not stronger, otherwise Wang Hao would have won 2 Olymppic gold medals considering that he played against 2 traditional penholders that do not even use backhand at all! it simply isnt as strong as Zhang Jike for example@@TomAndyStripe

Of course Wang hao is the Myth,The Master,no one could play this fantastic style better than him even XuXin ZhengPifeng,ZhaoZihao,XuFei or XuHaidong though I believe the last ones under supervising and coaching by Master Wang Hao might be able to play as well as Wang Hao!But up to now Wang is the myth of Penhold Grip!

SH backhand is more stable, allows for a bit more power and is superior for blocking. RPB is better at service return flicks and side spin rallies at mid and close range.

I play shakehand normally, but I try penhold sometimes for fun during training and RPB is even more powerful than my shakehand backhand and my backhand is stronger than my forehand. My shakehand backhand is safer though, espescially for blocking, and it's strong enough at my level anyways.
I do have a own grip that is a hybrid of penhold and shakehand. It's very good for a backhand dominant player, you can hit backhand far into your forehand side. I have only seen 1 elite player use that grip, but I will try learn to use it effectively and replace my shakehand grip in the future.

Problem with Wang Hao's backhand is that it was not good far from the table. Plus, he tended to always play it in the diagonal, so players like Ma Lin had no difficulty against him, because they expected it.
As a Chinese, I can tell you the actual situation. In fact, Ma Lin has won Wang Hao many times. And Wang Hao won Wang Liqin many times. Wang Liqin Won Ma Lin many times. So, the outcome of the three of them. As a result, Wang Hao did not win the Olympic. Ma Lin did not win the World Championships. Wang Liqin did not win the World Cup.
Actually it was great for mid distance.It's his defense/blocking that was weak.
