IIRC, Arnold was the most important monster in 2014 because people didn't knew how to deal with him.
I still remember when i watched my brother play (he started waaay before me) and Double Verdehill, Double Arnold was "cancer defense" because there was literlly no way to counter it except for some monsters, like Ramagos, but even with him it was super hard.
Its not that people didn't know how to deal with him. He was just op. Then they nerfed Arnold and vio.

I wasnt there when this happened but I heard that the reason Luer was used is because Galleon was released later and not because people thought he was better. Anyway I use Luer a lot, and Galleon is just runed for spd lead in a siege def. Luer is so great with Isabelle.

Luer still defense broke. Galleon was actually a new release. Not that people discovered him. I remember reading the new skills of pirate captains.
