I asked in my last vlog if you guys wanted to see a dark academia recommendations video, and you said yes, so here we are!! Here are my favourite dark academia themed books--these are books I think you'll like if you liked The Secret History by Donna Tartt. I did also include TSH on the list JUST IN CASE anyone hadn't already heard of it.

I just finished If We Were Villains by M. L. Rio and really loved it. The Secret History is one of my favorite books ever and this had similar vibes with a lot of Shakespeare woven into the story.
Have you read A Lesson In Vengeance by Victoria Lee? I've heard a lot of good things about that book too!

Interesting, TSH is my favourite book of all time and I despised IWWV.
Personally, I would definitely put Possession by A.S. Byatt on this list as a must-read. Not sure why this book is not on most dark academia reading lists, but it soooo belongs on there. Highly, highly recommend!
Also, of course, all of Salinger, but both Catcher in the Rye and Franny and Zooey for dark academia specifically (at least in my opinion).
Perhaps The Dante Club by Matthew Pearl too? In particular because it deals with literature (and it goes very dark indeed, haha), as do many of his other works, by the way. It has a sequel I haven't read yet as well.
And finally, as other people have already recommended, Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo. It has a very strong female lead.
Edit: I feel silly for even editing this comment that no one's going to read anymore, but I totally forgot about Brideshead Revisited! And it is right up there with Possession as far as I'm concerned, dark academia-wise Can't believe I didn't mention it the first time around...

I second both your recs! Possession is such a wonderful love story, too. Also about the love for research and knowledge. I wonder why no one talks about it? Perhaps because the movie was unfortunately a bit bland (the trailer is good.
I would also recommend a biographer‘s tale by the same author A.S Byatt.
A book I think it's a Dark Academia is "A Natural History of Dragons" by Marie Brennan. This story is writen as a memoire and tells the life of Lady Trent, a woman that became the first female dragon naturalist on the world (in this world, dragons are just another animal species). It's really good and the story sets on a "Regency like" period, which is also nice 💕
That is one of the most underrated and under talked about books on BookTube.
Ishiguro is such a talented author. Everyone should experience his books. Same with Murakami.
Frankenstein is my favorite book. I reread it often. Always get something new and different out of it. And the Creature reads Milton’s Paradise Lost, which is another must read.
Reading Frankenstein made me read Milton. , and I am glad I did. ^_^
I recently read Piranesi and was pleasantly surprised by it. It is so beautifully written, I was really impressed.
Your comment when you finished the secret history - “I feel dead inside” really made this book jump up on my tbr, I’m not sure what that says about me 😂 I love all of your recommendations and all the ones I have picked up so far have been big hits for me, I have recently finished The Priory of the Orange Tree and loved it, already looking forward to a re-read. I wouldn’t have found this if it wasn’t for your videos so thank you. Your channel is so brilliant and you are such a ray of light ❤️

i dont really know if it qualifies as dark academia but Bunny by Mona Awad has a female MC and it has that dark speculative vibe and it also has the "small exclusive group of students in higher education" trope. ones i haven't read but are also dark academia-y are Sleepwalking By Meg Wolitzer and Picnic at Hanging Rock by Joan Lindsay.

I've read 3 of the books recommended, and enjoyed hearing your thoughts on them! I think Norweigian Wood is next on my TBR---I've been wanting to get into Murakami's books, and have heard a *lot* of good things about that one in particular. Great video!
Oops, forgot to mention in my comment, but I wanted to ask you if you've read Vita Nostra, by Marina and Sergey Dyachenko? I think that that book had a lot to say especially about the nature of fear control and the power of words (particularly deceptive words). I'd recommend it!

I think you really need to read The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern. It has fantastic dark academia vibes, but also has some fantasy elements mixed in. It’s a beautiful novel.

Hi Christy! A book I've read recently which I think would qualify is Daphne by Justine Picardie. It's about Daphne du Maurier when she was researching Barnwell Brontë to write up his biography. I loved it, it was so moody and fascinating
Before I knew about the dark academia genre I read The Hidden by Tobias Hill. It's a great book that effectively builds suspense and I now realize it completely falls within that genre as dark academia on vacation. Imagine if the insular group of friends with a dark secret were scholars in the archaeology field and had gone to Greece to work on a dig on ancient Sparta. Highly recommend.

This year I returned to studying as a mature student. One of the course texts was Frankenstein and I am so fascinated by Mary Shelley and her life. This book has SO MUCH social commentary running through it and I could talk about it forever!
I read Never Let Me Go for my British Fiction class in college and my instructor asked us to go into it blind, which is DEFINITELY the best way to read it !!!
I am thinking of starting up on this genre with all the hype it has been getting and this has been a great guide. Thank you

I don't know if this would be considered as dark academia, but there is a book that has always been one of my favorites since I was a kid called When JFK Was My Father by Amy Gordon. It's about a young girl who gets sent to a boarding school and imagines that JFK was her father instead of her real father. And there is a boy who has a profound influence over her. It was very good and very influential to me. I love it to pieces. I would also say Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson is also kind of dark academia because it has a lot of dark themes and is set in a high school. That book also really inspired to me as well.

Piranesi is fantastic! I was so happy Clarke won Women's prize for fiction this year. I really need to muster the courage to pick up the tome that is Jonathan strange & mr Norell😅. I'd recommend Ninth House. It was a pleasant change from Bardugo's usual work. Some really interesting plot twists and magic system there and it features a strong female protagonist at the forefront :))
I am halfway through Ninth House now and loving it :)
I would also like to suggest "the perfume" which is an incredible book and i think that fits with the aesthetic

I love Looking for Alaska to pieces and some female orientated dark academia novels are Ninth House, and Legendborn, haven't read these two but heard some good reviews ❤️ gonna read them soom

Thank you for this! I have 3 on this list. I love, love, love "Looking For Alaska" and "Perks". Both left me feeling hollow for a bit but made me think, too.
I'd add "All Souls Trilogy" by Deborah Harkness. It is historical romance/fantasy, but the main character is an academic named Diana Bishop who descends from witches. The books are set in Oxford and the Elizabethan age, etc.
Loved the All Souls Trilogy! My favorite series of all time!

I would consider The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss dark academia. I haven’t read it in 10 years and the trilogy still doesn’t have a third book but it’s definitely a good one for fantasy fans!
I haven't finished it, so I don't know if I still will recommend it when I do, but The Likeness by Tana French has major Secret History vibes! The friend group reminds me so much about the main characters in The Secret History, with them all living together in a big old house, and being mysterious and the main character Cassie being drawn to them and their lifestyle, very much like Richard in The Secret History. But again, I've only read about a third of the book, my opinion may change, but I hope not! Oh, and yes - a female main character!

I think a classic play that would qualify as Dark Academia would be Ibsen's Hedda Gabler. There are academia connections in that Hedda's husband and her former lover are intellectuals vying for the same professor's position. She is playing a very dark game, indeed.
For Dark academia books that have women as main characters and that are more « classical » dark academia (like secret societies in elite schools) I would recommend Catherine House and Bunny !
I loved perks of being a wall flower.
Here are some DA books with female protagonists on my list -
(i) The Truants - I am reading this now, and its writing style is reminiscent of the Secret History and is set in England. I am loving it so far.
(ii) The Ninth House - Set in secret societies of Yale and with magic, I did not finish, as it felt too quick-paced and gritty/bloody for my taste, but maybe I will return when I'm looking for a fast thriller.
(iii) All These Beautiful Strangers - I liked reading the sample first few chapters, and it's on my list too. It sort of goes between 2 storylines - one about an initiation into a secret society in a boarding school, and another about a personal family mystery in a gothic house.
I'm not sure if these are counted as dark academia but I hope you'll check out The Likeness by Tana French and The Raven Cycle (series) by Maggie Stiefvater 😊

A book i would recommend for Dark academia is The Maidens by Alex Michaelides! I highly recommend it. The twist and turns, the thriller atmosphere. Everything about it is amazing xx :3

The Historian is a great dark academia book!!
Tam Lin by Pamela Dean is wonderful dark academia story set at a liberal arts college. It's also a retelling of Tam lin/Thomas the Rhymer. And the main character is a young woman.
I would love to know your comments on Shea Ernshaw's books. I haven't seen any on your videos yet cause I'm a new subscriber but I will keep watching to find out ❤️ I've read Winterwood and The Wicked Deep. And they've got under my skin.
If you are looking for more female characters, I'd recommend Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo. It's a quite dark novel and it is set at Yale. It has several dark fantasy elements (murderous ghosts and dark magic), and heavy real-world elements (racism, sexual assault) 💀🎓👻🖤
Middlegame by Seanan McGuire. Sort of urban fantasy? Lots of morally reprehensible alchemists trying to be gods by making gods. It has that element of unbridled hubris and vain confidence dark academia usually enjoys.
I've read all but 3 books on that list. I wonder if *that scene* in Norweigan Wood is the same scene that annoyed the heck out of me.

Christy, have you read Amatka by Karin Tidbeck? I seem to remember you recommending the author, but don't remember which book specifically. So curious to hear your thoughts. It was the most standout fiction novel I've read in the last 5 years, at least.

I read A Lesson in Vengeance by Victoria Lee last month and it was awesome! YA, dark academia, spooky - all female/non-binary characters, all authors and fashion designers mentioned in it are women, there isn't a single he/him pronoun in the entire book.
Vita Nostra by Marina and Sergey Diachenko is also a fantasy, dark academia book with a female protagonist. It's weird, and slow, and very Russian. I recommend it, it was a totally unique experience, but... it's weird.

I memorised it like this: the pursuit of knowledge is normally associated with light, clarity, enlightenment, etc. Dark academia is basically the opposite, when the pursuit of knowledge takes a dark turn.
