With living in Idaho and my family owning quite a bit of property I can go on almost any hunts I want if I have a tag and i truly don't think I'd rather live anywhere else we have such a wide variety between a deer or a turkey to a wolf or a moose and it's honestly amazing and I wouldn't want it any way else
Thanks for sharing another one of these strategy videos Randy. As you know by now my Dad, my youngest brother and I went out to Idaho for a mule deer OTC hunt. I didn't have the $$$ for a tag, but went for the experience and I am glad that I did. My brother got his first ever mule deer buck, a 3x3 with his .270. I got to help him do the gutting and gilling and pack out from 1400 vertical feet and a couple miles back in. We also went after some ruffed grouse and they were delicious in a wrap with potato slices and onions and cheese. I would definitely go again when I can. Good luck on drawing the moose tag. I know that you and Corey are doing an OTC archery hunt for elk as well. Since you are doing the OTC elk you can still do that and apply for moose. Best of luck.
I live in Idaho, I must have really bad luck I've applied for controlled hunts the last 5 years and the only controlled hunt I've been able to draw in those 5 years is an either sex regular deer tag in unit 39 and ended up shooting a buck that year during the general season buck only. I'm keeping my fingers crossed this is the year. I put in for a deer elk and antelope. I really want that antelope tag.
Im from Idaho to.I drew a tag about 12 years ago. Even if it was 100% draw rate the previous year I don't draw. I know some people who consistently draw tough units. Others don't draw at all.
Everything he said is wrong. If you want to come to Idaho just get over the over the counter tag and maybe you will get one but it’s always rough. Really hard to get the draw tags for out of state. Good luck tho. Last year a bunch of people left idaho trashed, so maybe this year we can clean up a little bit better even if it was not our mess.
@@jimmy137losser hey Jimmy, we are coming in from out of state. If you don't have a tag yet you are out of luck for this season Idaho tags sold out a while back. Idaho is a fun good place to hunt but they are pricing this hunter out of the game there.
@@jimmy137losser yes most all states you can do online. Idaho tags for elk and deer will go on sale this December for the 2021 season. Just go the idaho's fish and game website and they have a "Hunt Planer" button you can select, then just pick what you want to do and it walks you along with hunt options. Idaho's rules and licensing is pretty straight forward.
Randy, You overlooked or didn't mention how in Idaho if you draw an elk or deer controlled hunt antlered tag you are ineligible to apply the following year for antlered elk or deer. Unless it is unlimited hunt area. See controlled hunt eligibility page 108.
Sort of true. If you drew last year you can't apply in the 1st drawing. That rule goes away for the 2nd drawing and even if you drew last year you can now apply in the 2nd drawing.
Moose draw in Idaho must be darn near impossible. I don't even bother with that draw, as a non-Res, the percentages just aren't there to make it a worthwhile proposition. I will look into the OTC stuff though. No points is a good incentive. I'll look into archery Elk and Deer.
Idaho did add $200 to each elk and deer license. They also sold out of general elk tags in many units for 2020. I’ve been guiding in southeast Idaho for 6 years, and one thing about controlled hunts is many take place in regular otc units, but the season is before the general hunt. There are millions of acres of public ground, and big bucks and bulls are seen and taken every year. But Idaho can be very rugged! Be in shape and practice the longer shots if you want to bring home a trophy.
when you said you have to buy and then pick up your permit/tag for controlled hunts by August, does that mean you have to physically travel to Idaho from wherever you live and collect that piece of paper or will they send it to you if you purchase it?
Over here in Washington the whole system is B.S. and planting wolves with the deer tag money we buy is not conservation. Wishing I didn't live here right now
I received an email last Thursday that stated they would once again be on sale to non residents at 10am local on Saturday. Bought a license and a deer tag that morning.
I'm going for my first hunt in Idaho this year. Hoping this year is a successful hunt, even tho even if I'm not it will be a good time. Plus next year I have about 20 people that want to come with me.
@@42N8_1 they are all veterans or service members and brothers of mine, that like me have never hunted elk before. I'm going this year to get experience so that I can help them next year. The hunting is a bonus, the main part is for us all to get out in the woods and enjoy nature. Some haven't hunted before, others this is their 2yr hunting, others are seasoned hunters. I apologize you feel that way, but the best time I had hunting was this past season when I took a friend who never hunted before to where I hunt and watched him get his first deer (it was a nice big body 6 point buck). The look on his face was priceless and worth it to me, the bonus was it was also on his birthday. Thank you for your thoughts though.
Big game populations in Idaho have changed drastically over the last 10 years because of the wolves. If your interested in wolf hunting come on over! Another factor we have had is a major increase in people moving here so the number of resident hunters has really impacted things. More elk and deer hunters along with more wolves is not a good combo. A few years ago we had record breaking snow fall which also had a negative impact on the herds. In the Bible it mentions how every 7 years the land was not to be planted so it could rest (Lev 25:4). I sure wish we could focus on thinning the wolf packs and leave the big game alone for a year or two. Seeing wildlife while driving through the mountains used to be very common but not anymore. One last thought... if you don't plan to use the meat for your family then bring a camera and not a rifle.
@@wildernessoutdoors6875 anywhere in the frank. Personally I get mine near challis. Please kill our wolves. Between them and our winters and out of staters it's harder to provide for my family. A lot of us locals don't go to the grocery store lol
some non-res tags are capped. you can look on the Idaho G&F website and see the "capped" areas. Also, overall non-resident tags are limited. For 2020 is 12,815 non-resident elk tags, some are for capped areas. Here is the website idfg.idaho.gov/tag/quotas-nonresident

Never once put in for a draw. I have shot a buck every year since 2008. Same unit too. Just gotta go to the spots your grandpa took ya too.
Idaho is easy. Buy a license. Buy your tag and choose which 3 days you want to be able to fish and GO!
I love love Idaho. My heart is in Idaho. Thanks for the advice!
Ready for the next one. OTC elk is my goal this fall
You can apply for a deer elk or antelope if you put in for moose sheep or goat only if the deer elk or antelope hunt is unlimited
Idaho is on its way out. I'd try NV or CO.
Definitely do not hunt Idaho. We all out of 5 inch droppers

You also need a archery class in Idaho to hunt Idaho archery
Already have my elk tag for Idaho in my pocket. One last time before they raise the prices. Then moving on to another state. Thanks Randy!👍

Dumb question guys but I’m sure it’ll get answered, but if I buy and otc tag what units does that mean I can hunt?
Did you know that disabled veterans from out of state can get a great discount

Would you rather have 10,000 Wolves or 1,000,000 Coyotes ???
Your odds are best if you wait till June 6th.
Why do you say that?
Last I heard Idaho wasn't selling non-resident hunting or fishing licenses because of the virus...
I bought one yesterday afternoon.
I received an email last Thursday that stated they would once again be on sale to non residents at 10am local on Saturday. Bought a license and a deer tag that morning.
They only stopped spring bear if you had not bought before April 15 .. now all tags left are for sale however OTC go fast in dec only few left
We started selling them again on May 15
Not anymore. Now its only Californians who are not allowed.
