I live in Santo Domingo in Zona Colonial I would never live in a barrio if I was a solo traveler for safety reasons. If you know you know. I would live in a tourist area first and get to know the different barrios and see where it is safe. Dominicans have zero boundaries and if your alone you will be a target for harassment and theft. It is just the reality of living in the third world.
