My grandfather used to drive the rolling chassis down to the coach works in Connersville, IN and the finished ones back to Auburn, IN. He figured he drove more different Auburns, Cords, and Duesies more miles than just about anyone as it was about a hundred miles each way. The rolling chassis didn't even have seats so he strapped a milk crate to the chassis and sat on that.
16:18 I think every person watching this show can agree what Dave said was perfect. Thank you Jay for appreciating, understanding and promoting the history these cars are. This stuff is really valuable. We are lucky to have Jay show all this to us around the world.
Jay could sell a Duesenberg any day. He loves them you can tell. My dad ( like Jay he was a car guy's car guy) used to talk about them but I never really knew about them really til I discovered Jay and his garage. Thanks Jay. I'll never afford collective cars but you have helped pass the torch. Since dad died I don't really have anybody to talk cars with. You are more of an older brother but you help with the void. Thanks for sharing all these pieces of unique history with us.
I love the way Jay brings a car to life, putting them into perspective against their contemporaries and showing his passion for them all rather than just showing one as a well preserved ol' car.
Oh man, this is so badass. The Ford/Duesenberg hybrid was featured in a "boys fiction" book from 1952. I never thought I would see one. Thanks, Mr. Blake and Family for saving it, and thanks, Jay for featuring it.
That thing is incredible. Perfect mix of 'oddball' and 'traditional hotrod'. Jay says "I'm not a hotrod/custom car guy", but the hotrods/customs he features are top tier. More early rods like this, Jay. This stuff is why this is TH-cam's best car channel.
What a great episode. Sometimes the more things change, the more they remain the same. In this case hot rodding's past is still the future. Now this is a real doozy!
Jay you are thee most enjoyable host of a Car Show than any other; because your heart is in it all in. This car is interesting because you leave no stone unturned about it's history. In my opinion you are the Best (clean joked) living comedian in the World. You find every little thing you can turn into a joke and making people happy. Thank you Jay Leno for being "The Best!" We NEVER get tired of you OR Your JOKES!
Jay's worth $350 million, 50 of that in cars, so yea, there's no car he can't afford, but this is a family heirloom, so unless they fall on hard times they will never sell it, and Jay knows that.
Jay was salivating over this car the whole time, just as I would have been. This is one of the coolest cars I’ve ever seen, thank you for preserving AND DRIVING IT.
What a nice bloke! Real mutual appreciation of the history and significance and the need for preservation of old gems like this. Excellent episode, Jay! Thanks so much.
I think Jay's Garage is far better than his comedy or late show work. His passion, appreciation and broad understanding of cars such as this gives us so much insight that we might not otherwise have about automotive history. Greatly appreciated, I just wish I wasn't a poor Kia owner, haha.
Lavon Watson I used to watch him all the time back in the day. I even went to a taping of the Tonight Show when Jay was still there back in Oct. '13. He even sent me an autographed picture once. Speaking of Kia's, I'm going to go look at (and probably buy) one today.😄
Thanks Jay. Certainly a rare one. I enjoyed watching you guys sharing the appreciation for this piece of automotive history. Obviously a lot of folks just don't get it.

New favourite car on the channel so far, that is just awesome!! Love the way Jay looks over at the guy after he offers double jokingly but deadly serious at the same time. The guy doesn't even flinch!!
What a beautiful car. I never really appreciated old cars, I always focused on late model cars and hot rods, until I started watching Jays videos. Now I really enjoy the old vehicles, and the stories behind them.👍
I watched parts of it again to see if Jay was distracted when the guy was talking to him, I've read comments that Jay is a bad listener, I guess they weren't just trolling, weird.
I noticed it too, kinda funny. I wonder if they were thinking the audio of the questions asked during the drive might not come across so good with the open cockpit and roaring J, and ran the same q&a afterward to be sure they had it, then just included if because they had it for filler
That was great fun ! I love when significant old hot rods are preserved. That being said, I'd like to say that was great fun! I love when significant old hot rods are preserved.
Great piece! When I was writing my book, Time Traveler, I used the Duesenberg SJ with the supercharger option (1932 on). In researching the various cars of the era, I was floored when I saw the specs on the Duesenberg's engine with double overhead cams, four valves per cylinder and 320 horsepower! By comparison, a Mercedes 540K (k = Supercharger) of the same era, put out 180hp. The "State of the Art" Mercedes 540K was capable of 110mph, while the supercharged Duesenberg could actually do 137 mp!. No knock against Mercedes-Benz at all, it's just that the Duesenberg might have well been from another planet in the late 20's and 1930s! Totally amazing!
This series will become a piece of history by itself. Got to say Jay Leno is remarkable. He brings great humour, insight and warmth into the already colourful world of the classic motor car. His interviews and treatment of guests and their vehicles has taken more than a step up, its taken a blinkin' ladder. This has become the internet home of historic and classic cars, and everyone is invited. The experts, the owners, the dealers and the men and women who like to be entertained and educated with a bit of engineering and history. I love this channel. I hope it will become as familiar to people the world over as (er soft toilet roll)? EDIT: or spaghetti. If that was enough arse licking, Mr Leno, I need to find work....any chance? I am an artist, engineer and a friendly chap )) Available now.
This car is so awesome. Duesenberg's I think are the greatest American cars ever produced. They were literally decades ahead of their time in the 1920's and 30's. They had a Straight 8 engine in 1928 that made 320 horsepower. A 1932 Ford Flathead V8 had 85 horsepower. That is just so amazing. One of the coolest hot rods I have ever seen
Jay has spent a lot of time on concourse and at auctions. This particular model is a no-ceiling car. My opinion is worth less than a pro appraiser, which is worth very little, and I'd say this is a $400k car easy. If the right old guys show up on the right auction day, it's a 7-figure car. He clearly would love to have it but he doesn't want to bid against it. He's also buffing the value for this guy cause that's how Jay rolls.
Blake Machine knows its craft; their 36 Buick Century fits with a normally aspirated straight eight has made it to six high speed runs at the Bonneville SpeedWeek, and captured four high speed class records. It's a pleasure to know Mr Blake, and his insight to American racing history.
i dunno how this gets through the edit, but this isn't the first video where the same stories, explanations, and questions get repeated. I enjoy the content, but seriously, it just drags on when the same stuff repeats
Probably just a coincidence but it seems that from the moment that Jay started wearing the t shirts, the quality of the videos went from excellent to very bad.. With this one being the worst of all. Isn't there any quality control before they bring the vid out? To dark and very bad editing.. What a shame!
yeah you are correct!! heres one more documentary on this lovely car brand!! Spain emperor and Indian maharaja's loved them too!! th-cam.com/video/Lb-bhhUyrQc/w-d-xo.html
Jay is polite enough to ask Duesenberg questions, considering his expertise. Probably using techniques learned from years of interviewing. If there is room on the production team, I'll take the job making sure questions and answers are duplicated in the video :). Great way to start the week. Thanks Jay.

It's apparently something behind the car, not the car itself. It doesn't show up in any other scene, even when Jay steps on the pedal. The two in the car don't mention it or even pause in their conversation. You can bet that if such a rare engine started unexpectedly emitting any smoke or steam they would immediately notice and stop the car.
E.L. Cord bought the Lycoming engine company in 1927 and made it part of the Auburn-Cord-Duesenburg manufacturing company. Auburns were using Lycoming built engines even prior to that.
You are right Lycoming did manufacture engines for Duesenberg but it is fully a Duesenberg design. It was probably a wise decision to have Lycoming manufacture their engines as Lycoming was a well known engine manufacturer after WWI, but just about any willing engine manufacturer could have produce the Duesenberg design. It's the design itself that makes that engine so spectacular.
Lycoming produced engines for the 50 Tuckers produced also. They used helicopter engines because they were overengineered. Another groundbreaking Tucker innovation that the big three couldn't compete with.
Is it just me, or did they repeat every thing at least twice? Two different days of filming? Was the editor drunk off his butt when he put it together?
They drove by that casino at least twice and the light was different each time. I thought all those cameras on the top of the glass were some kind of weird decoration when I first saw it.
Hey Jay and crew, I love this car . This is one of the best. I wanted to tell you that I have a friend here in Florida that told me about a farmer that had 2 duesenbergs that were turned in to farm flat beds. It was in the 60's and he got to drive them on the farm . He said they "ran like hell" hahaha . I enquired what happened to them but he didn't know..
Hey JLG - Love your videos, but the last few videos are still just way to dark and look weird. I dont know what changed, but the previous format/videos were much better.
I'm sure Mr. Leno knows but possibly not so many others know the Duesenbergs and Ettore Bugatti were collaborating on an airplane engine at the end of WWI. They have one of these engines at the Udvar-Hazy Center of the Air&Space Museum in Va.
C'mon editor. It's a great video but it could of been put together better. I know it must be a lot of work to edit them. Just keep in mind of all the people that contributed to it and the fact that it will be documented in the internet forever.
Man I've been waiting for Jay to put up a video with a Duesenberg in it and that is one beautiful car that's for sure thanks to Jay for putting up a Duesenberg on here much love to Jay Leno
I keep coming back to watch this video again and again. The car's proportions and color are just so right. I love the way the shape of the radiator shell is almost a perfect offset of the straight-8's cam cover. It looks like the car was designed to show off the engine, so why have a hood to hide the mechanical sculpture?
I do, too. But his encyclopedic knowledge on the topic makes up for it. Makes me wonder how long he reads up and studies for each interview. He can't possibly remember all these cars & their details all the time.
...Jays been a student of the auto since he was 8 years old...getting every magazine, not just looking at the pictures but reading them front to back several times over. from what I understand he still does it to this day.
Yeah but to know the cost of a chassis in 1930? It seems like he might have to brush up some before his guests come. Some of the info it just seems like it would not be in just magazines. I did that a lot when I was a teenager and 20 something but I wouldn't know the cost of a rare car chassis in 1930s money.
My grandfather used to drive the rolling chassis down to the coach works in Connersville, IN and the finished ones back to Auburn, IN. He figured he drove more different Auburns, Cords, and Duesies more miles than just about anyone as it was about a hundred miles each way. Is it just me, or did they repeat every thing at least twice? Two different days of filming? Was the editor drunk off his butt when he put it together?
Even at his garage, I notice him asking the same question twice. That's what you get without a script.
You mean, the, uh, former editor ? lol, it's ok with me I love to hear a good story twice.
Two men of a certain age.
They drove by that casino at least twice and the light was different each time. I thought all those cameras on the top of the glass were some kind of weird decoration when I first saw it.
Matt Shuey I noticed that. Odd they both act like the questions are being asked the first time.
Man, this is the history I can relate with! She is so beautiful!!
14:07 Overheating 14:20 "It seems to cool OK"
i think it was steam evaporating because these engines didnt have any fan propellor!
This Duce' does, listen to the Video again, the Owner added a fan propellor = desert temperatures.
what a true piece of history,i,also have read about this car all my life.i can imagine how jay felt driving this beautifull car.great video.
Family Duesenberg (Düsenberg) was German familiy. The Brothers where Born in matorf-kirchheide.
Shure they build a Magnifisent Engine 🤗
Its not a German car relax
❤❤❤❤❤
Now i know why Jay Leno loves Duesenberg's. That hot rod is beautiful and the lines on the body are seemless, awesome.
Il give double that right now... Kidding not kiddding...you can tell leno wants it
Rabit Le Savage Show ..... kidding on the square.
There is indeed a lot to love about this vehicle... But my eye keeps going to that glass window on the driver side cam cover. Love it...
That window in the valve cover is about as dumb as a screen door on a submarine!
I was waiting for him to say he has the original cover back at shop safe and sound.
Love these classic cars that Jay looks at, glad to see them around, stilll, & to see people still keeping up on 'em.
Can’t believe he didn’t cover the origin of the term “a real duesy” in that historical old man ramble. At least twice ;)
Some young millennial getting too fancy with After Effects. They think these videos need a ton of filters and effects and it just ends up ruining it.
Wow! Nice-looking hot rod. Sounds marvelous, too!
just when you think you know everything about cars...
Now that is a Duesy! Great view of hot-rods start.
SENCILLAMENTE HERMOSO!!!
Will it do a burnout?
You can hear the tires squeal a little when he gives it a bit of gas while already driving down the road at one point. :)
Easily.
Yes, yes it will. th-cam.com/video/eu4Een3Ms04/w-d-xo.html
+jason wow
I can verify, yes, it can and has "Boiled the hydes" LOL
I keep coming back to watch this video again and again. The car's proportions and color are just so right. I love the way the shape of the radiator shell is almost a perfect offset of the straight-8's cam cover. It looks like the car was designed to show off the engine, so why have a hood to hide the mechanical sculpture?
Hey jay, that's not Johnny Pascucci's Duesenberg is it?, kidding, I got to ride in Johnny's Duesy back in the late 80s
Nice custom hot rod. That Duesy engine has the horsepower to move it down the road with ease. I like the long front end. Thanks Jay.
I miss the days jay showed his own damn cars
Ratt Rodd he's only got like 200, let them last.
Really complaining about him showing cars like this?
Absolutely stunning 😎
