    The problem with Haaland is even if he has the size. He isn't a targetman. He needs space. if you put a good physical defender on him like Rudiger for example, it throws him off his entire game. Because once he can't use his physicality he is nullified and he isn't like an Mbappe who is also fast like haaland but he can also still create something out of nothing because is so technically gifted.

      Not saying he is on their level but he can literally be a playmaker with a decent level whilst vini and especially Haaland wouldn’t be able to
      Mbappes dribbling is second to none
      And obviously he uses is pace

    In games with friends and classmates, I used to play like that. If I had the ball, I'd try to keep control in front of a defender and not run away from him immediately. Once you get the ball like that, as Henry explained, you can look around. You can have more control, and so you have room for a pass or quickly try to shoot forward if you're in the box. A tall guy like Halaand shouldn't feel insecure about it. He's not using his physique when he tangles with an opponent.

    And partially because Haaland has always pretty much been a ball-in-behind kind of striker since he started playing the game, only in his late teens did he get a growth spurt, acquire his frame, and show elite athleticism. Only later, like in dortmund, did he have to improve his heading and target man side of the striker game, but still he was primarily a transition, in-behind, and finisher type of striker. This is probably the first time in his career he’s being asked week after week to play like Heskey, and in even physical battles (Rüdiger) he lacks some fundamentals. Compare him to Lukaku or other physical specimens and Haaland doesnt know all the fundamentals to that side of the game when it comes to backing into the defender. Its another reason why city isn’t a good fit for Haaland unless they help him develop more in this area. City have to play to Haalands strengths more and Haaland has to improve at playing to city’s strengths.

    This is the reason Pep would almost always go for a nifty and technically gifted striker over a big tall one…They just fit better into his gameplay.

    • @JarrettMehldau
      @JarrettMehldau หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think Pep wants Messi to play as his false 9 and David Villa to play on the wing and have them interchange positions.
      Other than that I'm not sure Pep knows what he wants. Zlatan was tall AND technically gifted and Pep didn't want him. Pep didn't want the tall Mandzukic, but was fine with Lewa, who is a classic "9" himself, yet a very refined one. But then did Pep ever like Aguero, who is short and nifty? Gabriel Jesus and Sterling weren't good enough for him either. Then Pep bought Haaland, so he wanted the tall technically limited striker in this case to finally win him an UCL for City and it somehow worked out in Haaland's first season. But now he's probably thinking, if this is still the best fit. But is Pep really full on convinced about Alvarez being the solution to his problems? I doesn't look like it, because Haaland gets more starts.

    • @ilooiseomohinmin5430
      @ilooiseomohinmin5430 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@JarrettMehldau You raise some very good points, Pep did love aguero though - 124 goals & 29 assists in 182 games is quite impressive and that was Aguero under Pep. Sterling was great at first but kept missing extremely easy chances - one of which cost city an important UCL game if I remember correctly & he’s only gotten worse at Chelsea- Jesus just never met the high demands of a Pep centre forward- even at Arsenal he’s not meeting the demands there either. Lewa is the exceptional exception because He’s an exceptional talent. For Haaland I think he’s style of play has now become predictable to defenders and he seems to have no back up, whenever he is fit he’ll always start ahead of Alvarez because even though I believe Alvarez is more peps style overall - things like contract clauses would see Haaland in the first 11 more than any striker at City - plus Alvarez still has a few more years before He gets to Aguero levels but once he’s there he’ll be unstoppable.

      @@JarrettMehldau Oh yeah definitely! Every player gets a level of importance at every club. A lot of this is basics, but so many people do wrong. If you ask for the ball as a striker, ask it deep. If you come running towards the guy youre asking it from too hard, you lose gained space AND your momentum is running towards your own goal, not towards the opponent's. Stay deep, so you create space AND an opportunity for your team to run op and help you.

    The speed and physicality of the game have gotten more attention/priority over ball skills and body awareness. Larger modern players, in general, will be less agile than the "smaller" players of past decades.
    The ideal combination nowadays is like Mbappe or Ronaldo with speed and some decent dribbling skills but the ball dribbling skills and accurate touch passing skills of the Latin American players are not as well valued.
    It is definitely a unique presentation where none of the 3 were joking around. Must be a subject that is close to former player's heart.
