Martucci is another of those underrated/overlooked composers (in the UK at least), along with Casella, of whom I hadn't even heard, let alone listened to, until, probably, the mid-1990s. The Nocturne is beautifully meditative while the Novelletta, my favourite of the three pieces, includes a highly romantic surge at the centre of its gently playful canter. Lovely strings as well. The Giga is delightfully mercurial. A welcome upload!

The Nocturne is, quite frankly, one of the most beautiful pieces of music that I have heard. I was first aware of this piece from a recording (late 1980s?) by the ECO under Bonavera (coupled with 'Il Tramonto' by Respighi) and then, again, from a series of Martucci's works recorded by the Philharmonia under d'Avalos on the ASV label in the 1990s. The transition back to the original theme, at 03.40, is just perfect.
Muti takes the piece slightly more quickly than Bonavera (I think that's in Muti's nature!) but his reading is every bit as moving. A strong contender for inclusion in Badinage's own, personal, "Desert Island Discs" (it probably wouldn't make it but, damn me, it would be close!).

Talking of "echoes", Tony, there is, at about 2:07 (repeated elsewhere), a melodic fragment which sounds, to me at least, as if it's from Kalinka! Brings back memories of the Red Army Ensemble......

Yes, I can see that, Max. I love those old Red Army Ensemble records.

@@tonyobadinage6647 , Saw them, live on stage, as a kid...very early 1960s. Their shirts, I seem to recall, were olive/greenish colour, not red. They did a brilliant dance number based on the famous Cossacks painting that was used as illustration for Jarvi's Rimsky set on Chandos. That's stuck in my memory for at least 55 years now!

@Max Merry - I would imagine that there performance was quite something to see. I can remember seeing them on tv and my mother was a big fan. I had a couple of LPs of their choral pieces. This was always a favourite th-cam.com/video/loqrTHgsYMI/w-d-xo.html
I also loved their version of the old Scottish song, "Annie Laurie"; sung much more slowly than usual making, for me, the song more moving, more poignant.
