    Opened up a whole new world. I am kinda new stress relief coloring adult. I am in dialysis and found that with needles in one arm and a auto cuff on the other for 4 hours every other day it not only is a de-stresser for me but something beautiful comes out of an otherwise not very pleasant part of my life. (Bare in mind that I am a very avid thread crocheter and can get pretty creative with duct tape but am not able to do either of those and am not good at all at napping, watching TV, much less sitting still). I had only been using gel pens. Thank you for the new and beautiful idea!

    Cher, thank you so much for making this great video. I feel like I've just taken an art class. I actually viewed it once before when I was just starting out in my journey with adult coloring books and I think I've gotten quite a bit more out of the video this time, what with being more familiar with some of the terminology.I also watched your video about 12 blending methods and I was blown away. I have tried several of the techniques you discussed but with a kind of hit and miss application. Seeing you demonstrate as you explain has made all the difference in the world. It's late tonight but I can't wait till the morning light to try out what you've taught me. Another art class - two in one night and you can't beat the cost of admission.Thanks so much for freely sharing your talent and your expertise. You're super!

    The sakura gelly roll moonlight are amazing!! They are so smooth and nice i love coloring with them. If you let them dry for a min they wont smear.

    • @CherTheFire
      @CherTheFire  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +c derubeis Yes, absolutely, letting all gel pens dry a bit will prevent smearing if that is what you want - a clear color of the gel pen. But for those who want to play a bit with moving the glitter or the color around, learning a fun way to move it on purpose can be helpful! Happy coloring (btw, those gelly rolls are awesome pens).

    Me 2 years ago: Man I wanna color. I'll get these two books. (literally the 2 your hold up)
    Me a week ago: I've never colored with gel pens. Let's try it out. eeeeehhh.. I don't much like this.
    Me today: Well it looks like I'll be giving gel pens another shot.
    Also thank you very much for the coloring books! It really helped me to feel like I accomplished something while I was pregnant with my twins since I couldn't do much else.

      So glad to hear it Brianna! I had to giggle, because isn't that exactly how it goes?! We get curious, we get an idea, it might not work out, but then something shows up that inspires us to try it again. Thank you for giving something a try - that shows creativity and a willingness to keep learning! Something I'm sure your twins will benefit from immensely! Happy coloring!

    I'm an artist, and this video was very helpful. I have some Pentel dual Hybrid pens, and I mainly used that dry application for accents and areas I want to draw the eye to (also bullet journalling, those things absolutely rock for accents on lettering). I really need to try some of these techniques for myself: this is a great excuse to dust off my beloved old pencils and give those a shot in combination with those pens. I have a set of Bruynzeel Colour design pencils that I love to death, but I barely use them because my water-based markers got closer to the quality of my digital work (I mainly draw digitally). Happy to get back to them, it's kind of getting back to the roots of my artwork.

    • @CherTheFire
      @CherTheFire  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I love when artists can bounce between old techniques and current ones out of curiosity or to spark back inspiration. I am just learning digital techniques this year (can you believe that??). All my work has always been straight to paper, the old fashion way. I'm loving learning how to combine my tactile work and digital expressions together!

    I really like that you explain all the different tools you can use for painting. I have a 24hrs trip to do from Australia to london and I already bought one of these types of book from kaisercraft to paint on the plane to keep me busy. I will try to apply what you have showed today. Thank you also for explaining what is a blender pen because I was always confused by it.

    Hi Cher! I really am enjoying my new coloring book I received as a gift recently and it has brought a renewed interest in art for me. Thank you for sharing your time, talent and skills here. You are a good teacher who makes learning easy. I'm on the lookout for some pencils, markers, or gel pens that are clear or white but can add a pearl, metallic, iridescent or sparkly wash over color that is already on the paper, and also ones that can add just plain solid shiny or glittery "bling." I'm open to using a blending medium like water or mineral spirits, but want to keep things simple so I can color without needing to sit at a table.
    A container of water or mineral spirits on the end table next to me is about as far as I want to "spread out" while keeping the rest of my coloring tools in a shallow, open, smallish box in my lap.
    I like to put up my feet and color on a book or clipboard resting on the arm of the recliner. I'd also like to add another effect which looks as close to gold leaf or metallic foiling as possible. Would you please suggest some brands of gel pens, markers, or pencils (regular or watercolor) for me? Thanks so much ~ Janet

    • @CherTheFire
      @CherTheFire  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Creative Planet Janet I know exactly what you are talking about. There is a great brand, Sakura, that makes a CLEAR gel pen called Stardust Gelly Roll pen. Look it up, Sakura Stardust Clear Glittering Gel. You might start there and see if the brand has more items you are looking for :). Also, they make a wonderful white gel pen. the Sakura CLASSIC white gel pen is a good one.

    • @creativeplanetjanet
      @creativeplanetjanet 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +CherTheFire, Thank you so much for replying. I have heard them mentioned in a couple videos but haven't been able to catch much demo. Some Stardust pens are in my Blick shopping cart and I will buy now because of your confirmation. Also will add some glittering ones too. =) Getting back into this art stuff is fun. I even pulled some fabric from my stash today to paint or dye. Not from the recliner though - ha!

    Thank you for sharing, I am new to your channel and am enjoying your tutorials. I am new to colouring and trying to learn some blending techniques but noticing many of the colouring artists are using Prismacolours or pollycromos pencils which I do not have as they are a lil out of my price range at this time but I have been gifted a 36set of Derwent Studio pencils and wondered if your blending techniques both with pencils and with pencils and gel pens would work using the Derwent Studio pencils or does it make a difference using the higher quality pencils? Does it matter if the pencils used are wax based or oil based? Am interested to learn the answers please, and thank you in advance ❤️

    Very helpful video. It will definitely help my coloring. One thing that I would like to ask is your recommendation for coloring larger areas like in coloring books with figures with fashions. Do you have any suggestions for coloring these larger areas. Would you use the same type of techniques. I feel I really need help with coloring larger areas. Thanks

    • @CherTheFire
      @CherTheFire  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Bonnie Shapiro HI Bonnie, good question.
      If you are askign specifically with gel pens in mind, I would use colored pencil as a base color and use gel pen to add highlights and definition to the fashion design.
      If you are interesting in looking for large areas that are similar to backgrounds, you might be interested in exploring this : th-cam.com/video/Z2JcWepKxeM/w-d-xo.html. Also I have some short quick videos on topic specific on areas for general coloring. here's the playlist: th-cam.com/play/PLR3fjYG6-wMCrGxlLnGT2uhIKC87nRlaP.html
      As a general answer for large areas you can cover them with any way you use coloring but just taking your time and having some patience. Using a solvent to spread areas of color and blend them together is a nice way to extend your color (both practically in saving your medium and literally as in it spreads color). Check out this video for ideas on blending, but especially the ideas of gamsol in this video: th-cam.com/video/luC6GMVBlbw/w-d-xo.html. Happy coloring!

    I like the affect you get from the gel pen but I don't like the harsh lines you can get from the gel pens if you don't get them in the right spot with that said how do you get rid of the harsh lines from the gel pen.

    • @CherTheFire
      @CherTheFire  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Angela Restad Hi Angela, in my experience, there can be a couple of reasons the hard line shows up and stays. First it can depend on the gel pen and the paper. It can also depend on if you let it dry for a few seconds before moving them around with a brush. Sometimes I can do a correction by working on it a little bit more or I can add a bit more gel to increase the amount that is spread around (this can basically soften the line a bit because you are taking gel pen over the area and blending it a bit).Other times the line shows up (perhaps to a forementioned reason) and I can decide if I'm going to just let it be or maybe add a little pencil after it has dried all the way to soften the edge. It takes a little practice...after a while you'll get to know your pens to the point when you can *feel* it connect to the paper- it's like you'll know if it's going to be a harder line or if it's going to move easily. have fun!
