DEAD MALL- Owings Mills Mall 5/16/16

  • A trip to my old mall. I practically grew up here.
    The auction company selling off everything inside held a public preview this day. So I spent about 90 minutes walking around inside. It's an absolute mess.
    The mall interior closed in September of 2015, with Macy's shortly after, and then JCPenny after that. I'm not sure when it will be demolished, since bidders have until the end of May 2016 to pick up anything they've won in the auction. I assume it would be sometime over the summer.
    UPDATE: Demolition has begun on the interior of the mall as of July 2016. Please do not go visit the mall expecting to go in! It is SUPER dangerous as they are doing controlled detonations inside the building. I don't want anyone to go and end up getting hurt!

    Outstanding job Carrie! Thank you for your stories about this mall in its final days. Like you, I grew up in mega malls, so their passing is like loosing a good old friend.
    Hope you make more of these. Your voice and pacing are awesome. 😆🖒

      Thanks! I don't know if I'll make any more of these. I'd like to visit the Westminster Town Center just because I love how it looks - very 90s - but I'm not sure what their policy on filming is.

    Fantastic video. And what a shame. I worked at the Britches Great Outdoors in ‘’87-‘88. It was at the bottom of the grand staircase. There were actually four Britches stores (2 casual, 2 dressy, for both men and women).
    The Gymboree location was a Benetton when the mall first opened. I can still smell the Benetton cologne.
    The three original anchors were Macys, Hechts and Saks Fifth Avenue (my best friend worked there). Lord and Taylor was not an original anchor.
    A Ruby Tuesday was at the entrance to the Conservatory, near the exit doors.
    Other original stores were Abercrombie & Fitch (which was preppy and sold big shirts back in the day), an old school Banana Republic (when they mostly sold safari type clothes), Liz Claiborne, Ann Taylor, Rainbow Salon (I used to get my hair cut there).
    I remember working Black Friday in ‘87 and the mall was packed. It took me 20 minutes to make my way through the Conservatory to get to work.
    There was the occasional fashion show on the grand staircase, which of course was right outside my store. I remember hearing Roxette “The Look” and Sheena Easton “Strut” while women in overly-shoulder-padded suits and dresses walked the runway.

    This sure brings back memories. Moved to Owings Mills for Kindergarten in 1985. By '87, we were skipping school, crawling through the sewer from Painter's Mill apt's to the mall and stealing from stores all day. We were terrible lil latchkey kids :)) Wish I could've made it back before it got torn down. Haven't been there since '91 :( Thank you for this! Brought me back more than any other OMM video has. Narration is great as well! You sound chill af. Cheers FF!

    Excellent video, I always think people who film inside dead malls are so brave, I would be afraid of falling through the floor or running into shady people. Thanks for sharing!

    • @supitscarrie
      @supitscarrie  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh, there were definitely shady folks wandering around by the time I went back a few weeks after I shot this footage. I had won a couple of the auctions I wanted so I went back in. Lots of reports from the guys running the auction pickup of people coming in and stealing things. Some of the stuff out of one of my lots got stolen, actually. Nothing I was desperate to get, but it was disappointing. The place was totally structurally sound, though.

    This is a brilliant tour of this mall. It's sad to see it has wasted away from its former glory. I guess I am lucky that both of my local malls here in the Atlanta area are still doing well, though you can tell that things have changed over the years. Record stores are gone, gift shops are gone. One still has the GameStop and a Brookstone.
    Thanks for shooting and posting this. Sorry to see the place in this state. Hope you scored a few good items in the auction.

    • @supitscarrie
      @supitscarrie  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks dude! Appreciate it. We have some real choice malls in the greater Baltimore area, but they aren't "my" mall as much as this was, you know?
      I did get the signage I wanted, for what it's worth. Both Wizards signs are in my house right now!

    • @ngtflyer
      @ngtflyer 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's very cool, that you got the signs you wanted from Wizards! Awesome, really.
      I totally get this being 'your' mall. We all had them as kids I think. I know I had a couple. Worked in a few, too. Managed an arcade for a little while.
      That being said, around 16 years ago I got into my hobby which was inspired by those years in the 80s - I have some classic arcade and pinball games. It's expensive and challenging at times, but hugely rewarding.

    The sadness is so obvious here... very different from Dan Bell: it's hitting close to home.
    It just struck me that any plants that aren't already dead are surviving due to leaks in the roof...

    • @supitscarrie
      @supitscarrie  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It struck me as so odd that they just let so many of those plants to die. Palm trees especially are so expensive! Why wouldn't they try to sell those? Blows my mind.

      Thanks! I'm also pretty obsessed with Owings Mills Mall. I'd spend two or three days there every week playing Pokemon at the Wizards of the Coast, and I really got to sort of see it go downhill over the years. It's so sad. I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with the property, but it's a huge part of my childhood that'll just be gone.

    • @supitscarrie
      @supitscarrie  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      As I mentioned in the description, the auction company selling everything off held a public preview, so the mall was open to whoever wanted to go on the day I shot this video.
      I strongly recommend against going at this point, as basically the whole building was auctioned - stairways, escalators, railings included. By the time I picked up the lots I won a lot of stuff was already gone and it was just wildly unsafe to be in the building. They're going to tear it down this summer and start building a new development on the land.

    • @SimplyAS10

    • @supitscarrie
      @supitscarrie  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was like 9 months since the mall had closed at that point though. Some graffiti and smashed glass isn't too terribly much as far as vandalism is concerned.

  • @meily2004
    @meily2004 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    all the Brocken glass,mold,and died plants reminds me of rolling acres mall.

    • @zacharyclough8953
      @zacharyclough8953 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unless it's demolished soon, it will be in the same condition as Rolling Acres Mall in no time. The owner's of Rolling Acres Mall kept delaying the Sheriff's sale by filing bankruptcy at the last minute. I'm not sure if Owings Mills Mall has similar foreclosure sale issues.

    • @supitscarrie
      @supitscarrie  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Zachary, they've announced what this will be redeveloped into as of last week. Plans are to demolish it sometime over the summer. The only holdup in getting an exact demo date (according to the people on-property handling the checkout of the auction items) is that BGE hasn't yet been by to turn off all the power to the building.

  • @jaxcas2132

    I was over here a few weeks ago and I couldn't get in so I just took pictures from the outside. if only I had gone earlier this week to see it on the inside :( maybe if i'm lucky it'll still be open tomorrow or so. it's amazing how similar the interior looks to columbia mall, it's basically the post-apocalypitc version of that mall

    • @Goctagon
      @Goctagon 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      This mall was very similar to the mall in Columbia. I remember when I was a kid I'd get the two mixed up a lot. The Columbia mall is a bit bigger and better tho. I guess everyone just migrated to that mall and left this one to rot. Last time I was here was about 3 or 4 years ago and it was pretty dead. I saw the end coming. Pretty sad.

    • @supitscarrie
      @supitscarrie  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Nah, Columbia had nothing to do with it. It's way too far away to make an impact on Owings Mills.
      The mall's reputation plummeted in the early 1990s after that woman got killed, and then in the mid-2000s you had a one-two punch of Towson Town Center remodeling and expanding and then Hunt Valley Mall reopening as the Town Center with Wegmans as the primary anchor. Those two things on top of the financial crisis killed OMM.

    • @Goctagon
      @Goctagon 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Carrie Wood Damn. I didn't hear about the woman getting killed. But I see. I've always lived in Sykesville, MD which is sort of between three large malls. Westminster, Columbia, and Owings Mills. Not to mention the Carrolltowne Mall which closed down like 10 years ago. I grew up with all of them and never really knew why the Owings Mills one went downhill like it did.

    • @supitscarrie
      @supitscarrie  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Goctagon I actually heard while I was at the auction picking things up that the people in charge of the building had started missing bill payments and all sorts of other stuff. Seems like there were problems from top to bottom.

    Sure this mall was extraordinary and primarily Jewish, but once it turns into a lifestyle center or a retail park, I imagine fountains and towering trees over the parking lots. just like the nearby Foundry Row. Also don't forget to mention all that was Owings Mills is now hills and mounds of dirt and rubble.
