    I think Fatal Frame is SO underrated as not many people seemed to talk about it. The franchise is pretty nuanced with its Japanese mythology & gameplay that creates intense horrific atmosphere.

      With the fusion of Koei and Tecmo, the series was hit hard. Project Zero/Fatal Frame was heavily pushed on Xbox systems, yet, none of the games were ever available in Microsofts big Backwards-Compatible programme. On the Wii and Wii U, the series went completely in a Gimmick direction. Now Koei Tecmo is selling the old games again at a full price, to be fair, with optimization and the bonus that Mask of the Lunar Eclipse was never officially released in the West. But it really seems like they will go downward the Remaster route and it will get harder to sell the next 3 games individually at a full price. Hard to say if they are working on a complete new game. But that's still more than we got in the past 10 years from Silent Hill.

    What I Like About Fatal Frame 3 and Silent Hill 4 (The Black Sheep Games*) Is you're at your place, your home, your safe haven, then after time, your home becomes haunted, so you're no longer safe...😱

    • @SoftBoiledArt
      @SoftBoiledArt ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah and FF3 does it better actually. Also impossible to emulate in cinema since you have no agency to spend time in a place that you feel as YOURS, truly a game only narrative device.

    Unironically, the way they depict the ghosts, and how the environment is influenced by the ghosts, and the just the eerie, haunted feeling the games in general do give me a deep sense of happiness and belonging; it certainly feels like the ghosts are authentic, because they are deeply relatable.

    Honestly, I was hoping to see this trilogy announced in the last Nintendo Direct to go with 4 and 5.
    Gets weirder when the Gex trilogy and the original Clock Tower were announced for modern consoles this morning.

    • @maroXUprising
      @maroXUprising ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Can’t forget that the previous direct showed MGS volume 1 collection heading to switch. So yeah, agreed. it’s weird that a FF/PZ trilogy wasn’t announced at the previous direct.
      I’m sure KT/Tecmo must have plans to bring the FF/PZ trilogy at some point, though perhaps we’ll likely see FF2 Wii edition head to modern platforms before we hear anything about a remaster collection port for current gen consoles.

    • @tomforge614
      @tomforge614 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@maroXUprising I mean, I don't know if the original trilogy just has some weirs licensing issues due to being on the Playstation originally, but as you mentioned, there was a Wii port of 2.
      Nintendo clearly wants to Mandela Effect that Fatal Frame has always been theirs, so I don't know why they aren't getting the lead out.
      Kind of like how Chrono Cross definitive edition has been on the Switch for a couple years, but therr have scarcely been rumors of so much as a Chrono Crusade port even for Switch Online.

    • @tomforge614
      @tomforge614 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@maroXUprising And as you mentioned, it'a an MGS vol 1... which suggests that they plan for a vol 2, combined with the fact that it felt like a third of the games in the last direct were planned for 2024, so who knows how long the Switch has to expand its library.

    • @maroXUprising
      @maroXUprising ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tomforge614 Not sure if Nintendo has this mandela effect of which you speak.
      It’s clear though that Nintendo did not see any level of success in co-owning an IP like FF if it doesn’t reach decent enough sales to begin with to where they would heavily market those games…compared to the likes of Bayonetta 2+3 where Nintendo cared enough to fund the Bayonetta IP with Sega to bring us 2 & 3. In which both games resulted in good sales and good marketing behind them.
      Unfortunately I have not played the recent re-release of FFIV & V….
      I’m curious though if KT has regained full control of the FF IP since FFIV & FFV were able to release in multiple platforms.
      Yeah I Never heard of any rumors about a chrono crusade port heading to NSO.
      So that’s interesting to know.
      As for how long does the switch have going for to expand its library.
      Well, It’s only a matter of time. Sure, 2024 seems to have several games heading to switch as mentioned.
      I do think the next generation Nintendo console will probably be teased by the end of 2024.

    • @tomforge614
      @tomforge614 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@maroXUprising By Mandela effect, I was simply referring to how the original trilogy was on PS2, so you would figure Nintendo would have been more aggressive on re-releases their own consoles to try to disassociate Fatal Frame from the PS2.

At just about the 1:02:00 mark, I just felt a gust of wind and flash of white like someone ran to my side quickly. Assuming this was my wife, I turned my head to see an empty corner. Fatal Frame II/Project Zero II will always be my favorite in the series! It was scary, but I found myself getting more & more fascinated by the exploration and the sounds and the lore of "The Lost Village" and the dynamic of twin sisters Mio & Mayu. This franchise is the most underrated in the survival horror genre. Hopefully, we will see a remastered trilogy/bundle of the original 3 games. Please Koei Tecmo? 49:32 I’m honestly glad this scene was cut. I remember reading a document file in game that mentioned the head and limbs were “strangled off”. And I thought to myself “how would that work? How would you strangle someone’s neck and limbs so tight that they would detach from the body”.
    Not seeing the ritual in full and imagining what it would look like and even feel like was a way better scare then what they could show.

    • @MrDark086
      @MrDark086 ปีที่แล้ว

      If its the rope ritual it could be very VERY possible if its strong or very thick rope and has enough force to pull. Medieval era had a similar method in a torture device known as a stretching rack. There was also a similar practice done as a form of execution involving ropes around the limbs and horses galloping off in different directions

      @@Marichainz Right? Especially since the pre order for Maiden of Black Water was that you can dress up the characters as the main characters from the 3 games. It’s like, why must you tease us so??? T^T

    • @Manic_Panic
      @Manic_Panic ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Koei Tecmo owns the rights. That was made clear as water when they released Maiden of the Black Water and Mask of the Lunar Eclipse on all modern platforms under the sun without any mention of Nintendo in the intro logos or credits. I have them both on PS4 and PC.
      The original trilogy never even released on Nintendo systems, so it's only matter of Koei seeing if it's profittable to re-release them.
      Funnily enough, back then both games were the only ones that kept my interest for a Wii and a Wii U, now I can forget about them.

    I love all the games in the franchise but the first one will always be my favourite. It's hard to explain, but there is something pure in it. It's a case of beautiful imperfection. It doesn't feel like a crafted product like the other games that followed due to its success. while playing you always have this feeling of "something doesnt feel right " but you just can't explain it. My first playthrough was something ill never forget. And how the story picked up during the end was just so beautifully wrapped up and mystical.

    I remember when the American version of The Ring came out, I hadn't and still haven't seen anything that scared me more. I still have nightmares about it. It was the psychological horror, just the tape alone and that sound it made when it played, gives me goosebumps. Unfortunately I saw Ringu after so it wasn't as scary but the story explained more, maybe that's why it didn't scare me as much their was more mystery in the American version. Either way, I don't do little girls with hair in their face lol.

    On average, Fatal Frame might be my favorite series and the first ranks among my absolute favorite games. I do think it'd be interesting to learn more about Kei in 3 and how they came to justify his mechanical direction because honestly, he seems like he was designed more for a stealth game than for Fatal Frame's fundamental "stand your ground and fight" combat philosophy.

    I'm a big baby so I can't play horror games. I tried one of the Fatal Frame games, I can't remember which, in high school and lasted maybe an hour before I had to turn it off. It scared the crap out of me! Those damn ghosts getting in your face, being forced to hold them in frame as they get closer and closer, and the chilling sound design got under my skin quick. I brought it back early to the video rental store. Luckily my cousin was the manager and she let me pick out something different for free. She was like, "oh no, is there wrong with the disc?" I was like, "oh, yeah the disc is fine, it's what's on it that's cursed!"

    First than anything, thanks for the hard work put on this. Now, talking about the games, I'm glad they changed some aspects for the final releases of the titles, like the idea of the first game being completely in black and white or the longer introduction involving the car drive with Miku sleeping, that sounds a little bit similar to the opening of Silent Hill. In regards to the second game, isn't Sae the (true), final boss? Because, the Kusabi is the final boss only on normal or lower difficulties but on hard or nightmare is Sae the last enemy and another ending is shown instead of the Crimson Butterfly ending.
    Personally, while I like all the games on the franchise, my favorite to this day its still the first one, I don't know but the premise, the story, the atmosphere, the gameplay (harder than the sequels), the design of the ghost and even the length of the game (shorter than the successors), matched more with my tastes.
    By the way, it's kinda funny that the Japanese people see their own houses like creepy and eerie. I thought that I saw them like that, because, I'm foreign to that architecture but now I know they, themselves, perceive the same thing.

    After finding out that the very first game was a lie to some truth put to it I still liked it's little fantasy it endured but everything else is just meh when you compare it to the latest if not new original games in Japanese.
    The official Japanese versions of these three games in english if not the watered down americanized version of Fatal Frame are way better than they ever were unfortunately.
    I mean I had just always wondered why they hade made more games if not remake some games that were literally the same if not rewritten with new stuff in it but have the same names??? That's tragic but I'm just glad that it got redone for the better if not to save the series.

    Project Zero 2 ghost speed was garbage boring, never a threat, and the camera change still annoys me to this day.... I'll die on this hill!

      Honestly of the three, I find the 1st and the 3rd more enjoyable, but 2 definitely has its moments. I'd love to play the Japan only 2 remake, it would be interesting to see what they updated/changed in the newer version.

      @@Stigmatix666 Third and fourth were not successful in it's time. Granted, The Room is a Japanese Horror Story with US people on top. I know the developers are Japanese. It's the style I'm talking about. FF are pure japanese. The others are Japanese developed but have western settings. Even RE didn't have japanese acting until Revelations 2. But I get it, the title is wrongly written. It should be specific about the japanese setting.

    Okay 2:44 - ITS NOT SHINTOISM IT'S SHINTO. There's no -ism at the end, it's a mistranslation. Shinto is the correct name, adding -ism to it is incorrect. Sorry if I came off a bit aggressive about that, but our history teacher beat that into us since the beginning of highschool.

    • @thegamingmuse
      @thegamingmuse  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the info, I had never heard that.

      @@thegamingmuse No worries! It's a typical mistake in the west...! Technically, Taoism and Shintoism are incorrect terms, instead being Tao and Shinto. Buddhism is the one folks generally agree is correct, and the assumption is that that's where the mistake comes from. Since that one has an -ism, and the other two are of similar cultures, they must also have an -ism. Any practitioner of those two beliefs however would point out it's wrong and just a misconception of the west, as Tao and Shinto are belief systems, not religions by any official categorization - they do not have any religious texts, only guidelines on co-living with nature and one another. Also no one spiritual authority - they don't have a Pope like or Christ-like figure (that's why Buddhism gets the -ism, Buddha is their main holy figure, Shinto and Tao are about the natural cycles of life and death, spirituality, respect towards your ancestors, and balance between man and nature.)
      Sorry for the nerd-out, just yeah, knowing that it's an honest mistake, I feel like I coulda explained the point better! I studied this stuff back in highschool (as our history teacher saw that a lot of folk beliefs and religions shaped the countries he spoke of.) and in Uni I studied Japanese language, culture and history, so I got irked hearing it said wrong >

      As someone who has heavily researched them all, FF was mpre financially successful than SH2 thru 4. And RE4, to me personally, isnt a pure horror exp like FF and SH so it appeals far more broadly and is guaranteed to be better off financially anyway. In pure horror, FF sold well, and wasnt overly expensive to make. That is not the case w SH.

    Only? No. First? No. They weren't even a pioneer of new horror at the time, they were the first to access more historical Japanese nuance in their games instead of the constant western implications or usages. I do notice you used primes to imply what a quotation would, which is fine. I'm being an ass I know. But I watched your video and I didn't see any implications specifying that intention. So I'm just assuming you're leaving out everything *before* December 2001. They had over a year to create games, and Silent Hill 2 was one of them. While not received well at the time, it's extremely successful now, as not just a port and remake, but sought after intensely as the original copies. For the PS2. Released in September. So no, this is not the only 'successful' PS2 horror game. This is the first successful Japanese environment horror game for the PS2.
    Come, flaming angry netizens. I only made this remark because while ' -- ' This was used, it wasn't addressed.

    "Was unable to emulate complex traditional japanese architecture" was never true , 3D programs were always capable of such. Any person with proper research will tell you that..

    • @thegamingmuse
      @thegamingmuse  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well, according to interviews, the dev team felt the console was unable to create the architecture the way they wanted it, and they had to use castles instead. You'd have to ask them about it.
