Shoutout to my own 9-year-old self (and friends) building the euthanasia coaster on roller coaster tycoon 2; we called it "Passport to Heaven" and it was just a vertical launch that went straight up and ended. We set the speed as high as the game would let it go - we had to weigh down the left mouse button with a book and left the room for a little while until it maxed out. Then we came back, put the roller coaster in first person rider mode, and pressed play. There was a sound like a gunshot and then screaming. Endless entertainment.

Actually, I went to Action Park as a kid. The mountain 'coasters' were just concrete tubes n little wheeled carts with a handbrake. U could shoot off n land in the path of someone else n get run over, or have the skin ripped off ur limbs. The teens that worked at the park figured out that u could jam a tennis ball into a specific part of the go kart engines n over rode the limiters. There was an electrified water ride that killed people. The wave pool killed people. They had a jungle swing into a pool that nearly killed people. Anything u could think of probably killed someone.

I remember that ride Wade talked about at 44:32! That ride traumatized me thanks to my older brother. I was like 10 at the time. I remember trying to rationalize it thinking the alien has red eyes. It's not in front of me because I don't see the red eyes. When the ride ended my dad had to pry my hand off my mom's because I had her hand in a death grip. Her rings left imprints on her hand from my grip. Once I was pried off of her the waterworks exploded. My dad carried me out. The rest of the trip I was paranoid about the red eyes following me.

In Pigeon Forge TN there is a Titanic Experience museum where you get a "boarding pass" with a brief history of one of the actual passengers of the Titanic, from 1st class wealthy to 3rd class immigrants to the ship's crew. It walks you through nearly every aspect of the ship including the grand stairs, the 3rd class bunks, touching an iceberg wall and feeling how cold the water was that they sank in. At the end of the experience is a chart where you can find out if your passenger survived. Mine was a 2nd class mother traveling with a toddler and a newborn baby, I was so happy to see that they survived at the end.

The decapitation Bob is remembering is from a European (I believe German?) slide called Verrückt in Kansas, not Action Park, but I would heavily recommend watching Class Action park! It was actually from Texas and called Schlitterbaun (there was a lot of German and Czech immigration into Texas in the 1800s). The original park is still operating in New Braunfels, Texas (between San Antonio and Austin), and is nowhere near as dangerous as the Kansas City one became.

    • @brookerice7554

The loop was removed because they started using lighter trains which didn't carry enough speed to make it through the loop. The supposed head injury Wade said about was only rumored, no official reports of said injury were actually made. The original company paramount hired to build son of beast was fired before the ride was finished being built and another company was hired to finish building it and fix the first company's mistakes.
If you want more information on it I'd recommend watching GP to Enthusiast's video:
What Really Happened on Son Of Beast Kings Island July 9th 2006

    • @EddheadAce
      @EddheadAce 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Kings Island, 2006: A total of 27 people were injured when a car on the Son of Beast ride hit a span of track that had separated where timbers splintered on the giant wooden roller coaster in July 2006.
Also Kings Island, 1991: A 32-year-old Toledo woman fell from a ride called Flight Commander in June and died.

@@kaylinosprey3306 I don't think "far fewer deaths" makes it any better though? Like, if you saw that advertised somewhere you'd still not go "Oh I wanna go there." A parks goal should be 0 deaths over their operational period.

    • @kaylinosprey3306
      @kaylinosprey3306 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@sevse7en256 yes, but the safety of the rides and the training of ride operators at Cedar Fair parks, like King's Island (as well as almost all amusement parks in the US), are regulated by IAAPA (International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions) so safety is held to a very high standard. Because of this, most amusement park incidents which result in serious injury or death are caused by negligence and/or human error. Take the Smiler crash at Alton Towers for example. That was caused by running the ride on a day with wind speeds that were too high for the ride to be running safely, miscommunication between maintenance staff and ride operators, and VERY poor decision making. But even still, after all the stupid mistakes that were made on that day, all 16 people on the train involved in the collision survived. Granted they were seriously injured, as well as traumatized, but they survived none the less. GP to Enthusiast also has a video explaining it in greater detail than I did.
The coaster war era was a lot different as well, because every park wanted the absolute best rollercoasters as possible, which in the case of son of beast, left them to hire a company that was ABSOLUTELY not equipped to make such a large scale ride, and because of it the company that was tasked with fixing the mistakes had an extremely hard time finding out exactly what corners the other company cut.

Completely unlocks and lifts away from up as we're almost parallel to the ground. Mom freaks out and quickly pulls the bar back down, but it won't lock. I went on that Alien Encounter ride as a kid. They did a LOT more than just breathing on your neck. There's a point in the ride where an engineer is sent to rescue the ride-goers. The alien eats him, and riders are sprayed with warm water to simulate his blood splatter. That ride had absolutely no chill, but there was a lot of dark humor throughout the run.
As a side note; the likely reason why the ride was shut down was because it featured noteworthy Hollywood actors, including the legendary Tim Curry. Unfortunately, it also featured Jeffrey Jones, who was arrested for possession of child pornography in 2002. I'm fairly sure that was the biggest cause for why the ride was retooled into a Lilo and Stitch attraction.

We start going and the dang vest unlatched and I spent the entire ride literally holding on for dear life. I haven’t ridden a roller coaster since then.

When I was growing up, my Dad had Kidney failure and while waiting for a transplant, he had a dialysis port, which is basically a tube in your stomach area that you plug into a machine so it can flush out your kidneys. So he had this port and he didn't go swimming with it, but we still went to Hershey Park to ride roller coasters. I was terrified of roller coasters, so I would hold everyone's bags and wait by the exit while they rode. My sibling and Dad decided to go on the Great Bear, and I waited with their stuff. When the group that they went in with came out, everyone looked so freaked out and I remember watching people run out of there. I didn't think much of it, until my Dad came out holding a towel to his bloody stomach. Apparently, when they pushed the safety bar down, it hit my Dad's port, and he noticed it started bleeding, and he and my sibling were trying to get the people's attention, but they couldn't so they went on the ride with my Dad's port bleeding the whole time. We did get Fast Passes for the rest of that year though, and my Dad's good now.

I rode The Beast at Kings Island and it’s one of the worst coasters I went on. Not only does it feel like it’s about to fall off the track, but they also jam the lap bar into you hips so your hitting your head and cracking your spine on this coaster, BUT your hips hurt afterwords.
A weird thing about Kings Island is that THEY STILL SELL “The Son Of Beast” merchandise. Like stickers and a pin that says “I survived Son Of Beast.” Which I guess can be explained since the ride shut down earlier than most and they probably had a back log of merchandise, so they continue to sell it.
One last thing on Son Of Beast is that (I’m guessing. No research done it whatsoever I’m just assuming) there’s a new coaster on the plot of land called the Banshee (which is a sick coaster). The whole thing with the Banshee is that it’s a ghost, so they have generic gravestones, and stuff like that. BUT they have a pretty large tombstone paying tribute to the Son Of Beast. It’s pretty tongue and cheek but I think it’s kinda cool.

18:13 that's actually a thing! Kids love to jump off thing and to get thrown onto soft things. It's because doing that is the best way to develop proprioception and balance. What better way to get a feeling for how gravity works and how to understand how your body movies in relation to it that to fall and collapse onto things a bunch?

To be fair you guys covered a lot of not roller coasters, which solidifies the idea that they are actually very safe. But like with wooden coasters they are just as safe as steel ones, the bolts do not loosen the way you think and their structures are engineered to flex and sway for months. They are designed to feel dangerous and whip around, but you are actually very safe. They do close from time to time for maintenance and replacing wood beams and preform re-tracking during the off season. However, I did still really like this entry though, things like Action Park are always pretty interesting to hear about. And I especially liked the story about the sketchy Scrambler Bob rode at Kings Island. Also glad you guys started uploading this podcast to TH-cam. The Beast gave me my fear of roller coasters. When I went on it, I was just barely above the hight limit. On the way down the hill, the bar disengaged and I started to fly out of the seat, luckily my dad grabbed me and pulled me back down. I almost died because of the tunnel with the low roof. A couple weeks later there was another issue about someone loosing their hands on the Beast.

TL:DR Im from New Braunfels where Schlitterbahn originated. The decapitation was in the Kansas park. I wish it stayed local. However it isn’t “small” it’s 70 acres and one of the most popular waterparks.
I can tell you. I am from New Braunfels, where Schlitterbahn originated. (Hence german name) If I remember correctly that happened at the Kansas park. We all hate the Kansas park. The tallest waterslide had to be built there because it was outside of Texas state safety guidelines, and for good reason. If you watch interviews before it happened, they literally say they talked to mathematicians and engineers and told “the greatest minds they were wrong”because they were constantly told “It is impossible to make a ride this steep and safe.” No matter how many hills you added to slow yourself down, you’re still fighting velocity largely increasing with gravity. You would have to have the ride so much more elongated to counteract it. They basically blew it off and said “ah fuck it. Itll take too long and too much money to rebuild and extent it.” especially because it has already had its closing day moved 3 times for safety changes that clearly did more harm than good. The New Braunfels park is the original, the best one, and the most well known. Our city is rapidly expanding because of our rivers and Schlitterbahn. It’s cool it’s getting recognition but kinda wish it was still local. It was normal for 15 year olds to get their first summer job at Schlitterbahn, where friends still work as lifeguards now at 20. However, it wasn’t/isn’t small. It’s 70 acres with 3 separate parts with buses take you in between different attractions, but it was our thing. Now they’re appearing over the country, doing things like decapitating kids.....

It speaks to my generation that, despite everyone in the tri-state area knowing how dangerous it was, they still went every summer, to the tune of a million attendees per year.
There are folks on film saying stuff like "I'm going to action park! Hopefully I'll survive."
Makes sense though. Most of our generation's childhood was unsupervised. We played in constrction sites for fun. So what if you might need a tetanus shot? What's the big deal?

When they were talking about wooden roller coasters, it reminded me of the Timber Wolf. It's a wooden roller coaster at Worlds of Fun. It's fast as coasters normally are. Yet it shakes exactly how they described it. Every time I have rode it, I am clutching for my life cause it feels so much faster than the other roller coasters in the park and the shaking as it goes is so unbearable for me that I brace my whole body to withstand all that shaking and rumbling movement. And maybe it's just me, but roller coasters that go fast I can't keep my eyes open during it. I don't know how other people can watch as they ride without their eyes getting irritated. So yeah I've never was posed for any roller coaster photo ever. I swear if it goes a little slower than maybe I could see the ride in action while on it.

My dad was a bit to big for it, so the harness hurt him when we went around the loops.

My mom was fine. She fit the harness perfectly.

I was fully locked in with the shoulder harness down and as we rocketed up to the top and began the first downward bounce, I felt the shoulder harness give with my weight and click loose about 2 inches. Not enough to let me slip out, but enough to scare the piss out of me.
Needless to say I was gripping the damn thing the whole way down and it was still loose when I got to the bottom. I haven't ridden on a drop tower ride since.

I like to imagine of a coaster ride based around the Brass bull. Wherein people would go inside bull like trolleys with only two transparent eyes for them to see through. The whole ride has boiling hot fire going throughout the track, making the brass of the trolley extremely hot to the touch as it goes on. The ride itself isn't as fast as many coasters, though the uprise ramp does lead to a swirling track that symbolises the pain and suffering brought onto the man trapped inside it, as well as him repenting for the scenes he had committed.

At one time, many years ago, my older sister and her husband worked for about a year on a traveling carnival. Her husband told me this story about an accident that happened on a ride called "The Zipper". Basically it was a cage you sat in and it went up the track, got to the top, and came back down and the cages could be spun on their own axis. Anyway, one evening one of the cars, while on the downward side, came off the ride and slid quite a ways down the midway! it has landed bottom-side up so the guy was unhurt. Several workers came around, helped him out made sure he was alright, which he said he was fine, no problems and he went on his way. Later that evening this guy came back and had several friends with him and they all got on The Zipper. This time nothing fell off and the ride went smoothly but when this guy got off he was upset and complained because it wasn't as much fun as the first time he'd been on. Apparently he thought the cars were Supposed to come off at the end!

The Disney World ride at the end is called "ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter." It was replaced in 2003 by a Lilo and Stitch ride because of complaints and falling popuularity. I went on it in 2001 as a 3rd grader. It was, in fact, quite traumatic at the time. I can laugh about it now and wish I could experience it as an adult.

That was me, I was the kid screaming in Alien Encounter. I was in the 3rd grade and kept seeing the commercial advertising it, so I begged and begged the whole week we were there. Until my parents finally gave in... then the creature escaped and started running around. I was terrified and pushing up on the harness trying to get out. Then it happened. That moist breath on the back of my neck. I was convinced it was right behind me and for the rest of the ride I was screaming "LET ME OUT, LET ME OUT"! Until it was finally over and the lights came on. I was in such a panic I never heard my mother next to me trying to tell me it's OK, it's just the show.
Although this is now the second most terrifying thing I've ever experienced in my waking life. I don't regret going on, because what an experience it was.

I remember hearing about the kid getting decapitated on the waterslide not too long ago here in the states. I think it was over the past couple of years ago. I think it was something like it was a super steep waterslide and he essentially "fell off" the slide. If I recall, it wasn't a full blown "his head was completely removed" decapitation but it caused enough of an injury to his head and neck that it was basically an internal decapitation that he died from.

so, we have a low grade amusement park that's fairly run down, and there's a ride called The Hawk. it was a pendulum where the seats rotated upside down and stuff. I was riding, and the big part that goes over your chest broke, and the only thing keeping it attached was the seat belt, like you would find in a car, that was buckled, and when i went upside down, i fell a foot until the buckle stopped me. It was terrifying, not to mention i was still really young, and terrified of heights to begin with so getting on was big for me anyways. I never went on that ride again, it finally got closed a few years later cuz too many seats were out of order
In the same park there was a ride called the X-Coaster. It was a giant loop, 150 feet, with a spiral at the top. So you were brought up to the top, and free fell all the way down and around, until you couldn't make it around and went backwards, then got stopped after a few minutes. Every time i go to the park, it gets stuck at least once, for maybe an hour, with the passengers sitting 100+ ft in the air waiting to be let down. One time it got stuck on the upside down part, and they just had to sit there until the problem was addressed

My main memory from it is how cold cold the water was in the Tarzan swing area, and how you can just swim in that area where people were jumping off cliffs and stuff. I remember being really little and trying to dodge everyone landing in the pool. I really have to watch that documentary I keep meaning to and then forget about it.

There are wooden roller coasters at Kennywood near Pittsburgh PA and they're all super fun. None of them hurt to ride and they don't feel like they're going to fall apart. The Thunderbolt was my favorite but there's also the Jackrabbit and The Racers. The Racers is two coasters on separate tracks, and they start at the same time and the speed each time the coasters are run is randomly varied so sometimes one wins and sometimes the other wins and you pick which one you wanna ride and root for it to get back to the station first. You can see the other coaster as you go and you can see if they're falling behind or catching up, it's super fun.
