It really sucks how California just isn't really a feasible place to live for a lot of people because it's just so damn expensive. I love living here. Santa Rosa I have lived in my whole life and I've occasionally moved to neighboring towns here in Sonoma County. I don't want to leave here, but it's getting frustrating how it just keeps getting more expensive. I'm managing but I'm still scared of that chance that I'll end up being priced out anyways. I luckily landed what is called an affordable apartment which is actually considered different than low income apartments. I wish I was in a low income apartment because then the rent would be significantly lower but ultimately the rent is most definitely lower than the average for my area.
Two things to add: 1) Chicago is one of the most important financial hubs in the world hosting the CME, CBOT, and CBOE. 2) Texas is of course important due to the Permian basin the Bakken field, but let's not forget the Port of Houston, the 2nd busiest in the country.

Which is why people say "It's the economy, stupid" whenever an Election comes up haha .... turn's out, being able to afford to survive is the most important goal of most people
In the US a state or city is not judged a success unless there are more people added continually. Obviously you can't do that forever. There are towns in New England that have had a thousand people in them for two hundred years....I guess they aren't a success?
Illinois is valuable for transportation. Logistics is massive here. And it connects everything. Not only air cargo but ocean as well. A lot of people dont realize how important that is.

It would hurt but the country could live without Texas but we could not be without its poorer neighbor Louisiana for the port of New Orleans alone. Uh, Briggs? I think you might want to do a video on the top ten energy producing states. The reason I say this is because without energy most, if not all, of the other things you talked about in this video would not happen. I think you will discover that the top three energy producing states are Alaska, Wyoming and Texas. As you do this video you might want to take a look at Economic Geography. In case you are wondering, Economic Geography is the study of finding the most economical means of getting your products to market, starting with the raw materials for the production of the resources you will need to satisfy your energy needs and ending with the selection of, and transportation to, your distribution centers / markets. Take care.
Did you say Austin was a "desert oasis"? It may not have the towering pines of Oregon (or even of East Texas) but the TX Hill Country, which is just west of Austin, is most certainly no desert. Austin also has the Colorado River running through it. Yes, TX has desert but that is much further west.
Austin, TX gets 921mm rain per year, which is almost comparable to Portland, OR, which gets 938mm and Seattle, WA, which gets 999mm. Portland and Seattle have a reputation for rain but Austin does not, despite getting comparable rainfall. This may be because Austin's soil is limestone, at least the Western parts of Austin, so it absorbs water very quickly. That is why trees in Austin area may appear more like water starved shrubs, which are typical of dry climate. I also noticed that Austin does not have well-kept, manicured gardens and parks, like Denver, CO does. Austin gives rugged and dry vibes, despite getting substantial rainfall. Perhaps that is what Briggs meant.
@@you_dont_know_me_sirWell Austin is much hotter which means more evaporation. Also rain in Austin is far heavier than Seattle and Portland meaning a lot less rainy days

Same, love it here ! most diverse economy: hardware, software, chip manufacturing , birthplace of biotech, renewables, medical equipment, diagnostics, entertainment, Hollywood , national parks , agriculture, food processing, fast food, consumer products (Clorox).....micro breweries, wines, garlic (not in that order :); diverse cuisine.... .......
I sold my house in California and moved to Montana. It's the dumbest thing I've ever done.
You missed the agriculture in Florida. Florida contributes a large amount of vegetables and fruits in the winter to the US economy. Tomatoes, celery, cabbage, broccoli, oranges and more.
I've heard chatter from folks claiming how likely/unlikely their area is to be nuked in a tactical strike...
Now THAT'S a subject!
I think you summed it up for me 🎉😊
For some reason I thought Washington would be on this list, surprised that Michigan was. Great job Briggs thank you!👍💕
Definitely not gdp per capita... Washington is top 4
@@alancarlson8439 Thanks!👍
Washington GDP is 8th by ranking overall (not per person).
I have to throw my hat in the ring and nominate Massachusetts. We have a lot of history (the Plymouth colony, Salem witch trials, the American Revolution), we have a high gdp, some of the best universities in the country (Harvard, MIT), some of the leading work on biotechnology, birthplace of tons of artists and famous names from Sam Adams to John Cena to Aerosmith. So, I think Massachusetts should be on the list.
Living in the past?
Salem Witch Trials? I missed hearing what made that a contribution of any kind.
@@chuckinhouston9952You can't help yourself from knowing.
john cena ? really?! 🤣🤣🤣
Aerosmith REALLY??????
Two things to add:
1) Chicago is one of the most important financial hubs in the world hosting the CME, CBOT, and CBOE.
2) Texas is of course important due to the Permian basin the Bakken field, but let's not forget the Port of Houston, the 2nd busiest in the country.
And don't forget Barbeque in Austin. Find out what I'm talking about.
So basically, the 10 largest economies.
Pretty much. In America, money is really the only thing that matters. society, community, beauty, integrity....none of these things all together are still not even remotely as important as money.
What were you expecting in the list Arkansas, Kentucky, or Mississippi 😂😂
nope because new jersey and north carolina aren't in his list
Which is why people say "It's the economy, stupid" whenever an Election comes up haha .... turn's out, being able to afford to survive is the most important goal of most people
In the US a state or city is not judged a success unless there are more people added continually. Obviously you can't do that forever. There are towns in New England that have had a thousand people in them for two hundred years....I guess they aren't a success?
Illinois is valuable for transportation. Logistics is massive here. And it connects everything. Not only air cargo but ocean as well. A lot of people dont realize how important that is.
It's hard to imagine the US without Massachusetts
i was a little surprised it didn’t make it on the list. even now ma punches way above it’s weight class
@@ryanpb44 right you are. As a lifelong resident of Massachusetts we have some of the finest educational and medical facilities in the world !!
@@ryanpb44 just what I said.
We are also a donor state
You mean Massholes?
Wow florida is so nice❤❤
Super interesting! I knew CA would be top. If it were a nation it would have something like the sixth largest GDP in the world!
If you combined the 4-Corners states as a unit, where would the USA be without Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, & Colorado? Whether or not you're from here or have lived here, we are central in the American psyche.
Thanks again Mr. Briggs. I always enjoy your videos.
Yeah, GA!! Peaches, Pecans, and Peanuts.
Come for the veganry, stay for the smoked meats.
And wash it down with Coca-Cola!
@alliematt1016 😲I forgot the beverage!! Thank you. 😂
It would hurt but the country could live without Texas but we could not be without its poorer neighbor Louisiana for the port of New Orleans alone. The navigational choke point is why Louisiana is indispensable as is Michigan which should be higher. I would probably drop Florida from the list and drop Texas down to 7th or 8th.
I said the same thing 😅.
Mike Myers is Canadian he's definitely not from Chicago
The Cleveland Orchestra. The Cincinnati Art Museum. The Philadelphia Orchestra. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Art Museum.
Anytime I get to hear about California getting slammed for whatever, I get warm fuzzy! Right or wrong, that's how feel! But #1 and #2 did not surprise me. Yes, California IS #1 on this list and deservedly so!
California is just the greatest
I started my career in in Silicon Valley and I've been retired now for a couple of years. I wouldn't give up those years that I worked here. I really enjoyed my job. Luckily I didn't have to drive that far to get to my first job. When I used my motorcycle it was less than a 15 minute drive. I've continued living here because it makes a great starting location for traveling around the Western Region of the US.
Love living in California, never leaving!
@@RandomRabbit007 With just one week on extreme heat in 2024 here by the bay, who would like to leave CA?
@@humbertovazquez3733 Yeah people are dumb. The weather and lifestyle here is AMAZING (and it's only going to get better now that the public has woken-up to Progressive/Liberal realities, voters voted THEM ALL OUT).

Without SC, we could have lost the revolutionary war & been under English rule..The Battles of Kings Mountains & Cowpens turned the war around in our favor & drove the Redcoats north & to their surrender at Yorktown.. Very important history Briggs. BTW, I'm from VA, but a revolutionary war history buff..
Great sense of humor u have. Another comedian out of Chicago stand up Sebastian Maniscalco
I'm surprised Washington didn't make the list. Who can survive nowadays without their Starbucks coffee, Amazon Prime memberships, and Microsoft Powerpoint presentations?
Don't forget Costco in Kirkland
I love the 🍎 apples of Hippie-land
The nations biggest exporter.
Boeing?
@@Hemond1 HQ was in Seattle, then Chicago, now Virginia, however, Boeing Commercial production is in WA state, and Charleston, SC.
Once upon a time, California was also famous for its mineral resources. And not just gold, by any means.
California was the 7th largest oil producing state last year. Right between Alaska and Wyoming
There is a lithium mine in California that is reopening sometime soon if it hasn't already.
@5:18 as a metro Alanta resident I can safety say we do not infact have enough trees. We need more. Way more . We are the city in the forest. Ewok style.
We should keep all the states because all the states have history granted not all history is good but we need to know about it so that we don't repeat its self. Much love to you Briggs and your family
O’Hare has so many delays that they should rename it to O’Hassle.
And then there’s Midway, which has earned the nickname of Skidway because an arriving plane didn’t stop at the end of the runway.
O'hare just has too much traffic. Midway is in a neighborhood and was OK for the 50's. One thing that O'hare has
that IAH and Hobby do not is : rail service to anywhere. Thanks, RJ Daley.
Chicago. My home town❤❤❤. Thanks Briggs😊
And the Amtrak that you love so much has many routes that connect in Chicago, IL.
Here's something that has intrigued me about Virginia. There are parts of that state (esp Northern Va) that has a great deal of wealth, YET....no professional sports teams. I get the proximity to D.C ,& Maryland, but still...Virginia could DEFINITELY support pro sports.
Briggs this has been one of my favorite channel for years 🏆
Connecticut - the constitution state. We hid the constitution in a tree to keep it from the British. If it weren't for CT, we wouldn't have a constitution.
No. Not even close. That is not why they call it the Constitution State.
Yeah, Rhode Island too. Definitely need both uninteresting micro states. Oh yeah, dont forget Delaware and New Hampshire, what would we do without them?
And Submarines.
@@fishbone2921 I worked there and at P&WA in the 70s.
Really thought Massachusetts would end up on this list.
One of the things that Georgia is responsible for is Flooring materials, tile, carpet etc. I am a truck driver and I have hauled a lot of loads. I think part of it comes from Port Wentworth, GA imported items and then so much is produced in the USA. I used to haul Harley Davidson bike parts to PA. Auto parts to Lordstown (Cleveland) as well as to Detroit. Rolls of Paperboard out of Virginia.
Gotta wait around for you to say California. We seem to hit every list. Ha ha ha. ❤❤❤
My luggage left Chicago when I didn't. :(
Massachusetts
North Dakota, because it serves as America's Cautionary Tale.

Despite its *recent* problems with drugs, homelessness and wokeness, California literally represents 50% of human civilisation. Science, technology, Computers, The Internet, Silicon Valley, the Hollywood, Star Trek, Music, Art, Culture... never ending list. There are suburbs in California with more accomplished people than entire countries. As a non-American, Thank You California, for your contribution to human race. Of course, it was going to be Number 1 on the list. Well done, Briggs!
Star Trek??
@@Cam-vz2zk Yes. Star Trek has inspired millions of scientists and engineers around the world. As they say, one of the common thing amongst all smart people is that they watch Star Trek. If you have seen the show, you will notice that a lot of real world technology is inspired by it. Star Trek represents a desire to achieve the best of humanity scientifically, socially, artistically and philosophically. It is much more than just another TV show. So I would submit that it qualifies for its own place in the list.
I have lived in California for 55 years and I love it!
I have lived here for 56, my family homesteaded the Golden State. I love it as well. Our challenges are mostly created by our embarrassment of riches.
Washington needs to be on this list. Seattle is the cloud computing capital of the known universe...

When I moved to Atlanta, Georgia, I had to use the services of an Apartment Locator because I couldn't see lot of the Apartments from the Street there were so many trees. It saved me a whole lot of time finding places. I love the trees, and can't imagine now living without so many. I'm in the City but a friend of mine said it's like I live in a National Park, there are so many trees.
The Colorado River does not run anywhere near Austin TX. I guess Texans are as dumb as everyone else knows they are!
@@you_dont_know_me_sirWell Austin is much hotter which means more evaporation. Also rain in Austin is far heavier than Seattle and Portland meaning a lot less rainy days
Wisconsin. Btw, Chris Farley is from Wisconsin! Wisconsin produces cheese, beer, wine, and cranberries. Also maple syrup and cherries.
