- Santa Cruz de Mompox o Mompós is Located in the north of Colombia, in the south of the Bolivar department, on the Caribbean Coast. Mompós is also called the ""Caribbean Savanna "". It is one of the most precious jewels from colonial times.
Mompox is part of cultural, religious, colonial and historical heritage. It has also been declared a World Heritage by UNESCO. It has not been a very common destination to visit in the Caribbean Savanna in middle of the momposina depression. It connects the Magdalena River and the Cauca River. This city was founded in 1537 by the Spanish conquistadors. It has the particularity of being surrounded by water because it is located on an island in the middle of the river Magdalena, and has a beautiful colonial architecture. A religious city, Mompós is also the birthplace of Cumbia and the place where Gabriel García Márquez found the inspiration to create one of his literary work (Macondo).
A little bit of history…
Founded in 1537 by Don Alfonso de Heredia (who was the brother of Pedro de Heredia, founder of Cartagena). The city's name, Mompós or Mompox, was inspired by a Cacique (Indian), nicknamed ""Mompoj"" that had settled his tribe in the city. Mompós became an important center where convicts were sent for blasphemy, heresy or other reasons.
The order of the Jesuits was present in the city and created the College of San Carlos, a cultural and philosophical center. It is during this time that the city specialized in jewelry. In fact, the quality of the jewelry attracted many visitors over time.
Above all, the city was a link between all religious brotherhoods that came to trade. Mompós was the second biggest commercial center after Cartagena, and was actually safer against the pirates of the Caribbean. At that time, Mompós was perfectly located between the Andes and Cartagena.
What can you see in Mompox?
Nowadays, jewelry, fishing and tourism continue to be important income sources for this city, even though these activities are not very developed, and so Mompox remains an authentic travel destination. The city centre conserves its colonial architecture and was also declared a World Heritage site in 1995 by UNESCO. Going down San Francisco or San Miguel street, it is possible to see the traditional jewelry made by the experts of this art.
The main tourist attractions in these destinations are tours by canoe down the Magdalena River or in the Ciénaga de Pijiño. It is the perfect place to observe the birds and the flora and fauna of the region.
How to travel to Mompox?
By Road: The current way to get to Mompós from Cartagena. This way incudes a dirt road to Yati and a boat to the Magdalena River to get to the Bodega. This is where we will find the way to Mompox.
Mompós - Cartagena: 248 km / 7 hours, Mompós - Santa Marta: 8 hours. The road is long and in bad shape until Santa Marta.
A stop in the Aracataca village is a must while traveling by car. It is the place where the author Gabriel Garcia Marquez was born. You can visit a museum dedicated to him there.
By Chalupas (boat): Accessible from Magangué in 20 min.
By bus: It is possible to get here from Barrancabermeja in 2 hours.

Mompox es un pueblo hermoso, con sus calles llenas de historia y su estilo español donde el tiempo no pasa y su gente amable que resiven al forastero con mucho cariño aunque yo sea barranquillero pero quiero mucho a mompox tengo muchas amistades.

Si son de Bogotá y quieren ir a mompox les recomiendo viajar a valledupar y ir en bus o en carro a mompox queda más cerca que de cartagena son 3 horas de valledupar a momppx

Se pueden ir en bus o en transporte colectivo o privado. Lo pueden contratar desde su hotel o nuestra oficina de la calle de la factoria al lado de la plaza Santo Domingo.
Toma en cuenta que el transfer es bastante largo y hay que contar unas 5-7 horas.

No me gustó que mostraran las peleas de gallo. Sus exposiciones eran muy simples. Mompox es hermoso pero siento que les hace falta expresarse mejor a la hora de hablar.
