This is exactly the method that my parents and grandparents used to clean cast iron. I have added to their collections over the past twenty years and have never had a bad experience fire cleaning cast iron. As to the question of can it be don in a grill..... yes. I was in a situation due to the drought that we couldn't have a wood fire. I just fired a dutch oven on a gas grill until all the crusty stuff turned to ash and then seasoned it as usual. It worked great.

Woohoo! Tried this yday with perfect results! Old piece my husband literally found at the DUMP, lol. And thought I'd like to rescue it. It had chipping, pitted, scratched old seasoning on it. I warmed it in the oven and put it in the fire overnight, and it came out beautifully this morning! Rinsed/scrubbed it a bit, dried it, and oiling it now!

I am glad you made this video/ Several other videos say not to put pans in a fire? I have done it and like you have had good success. I always use a fire to clenpans that are crusty with carbon build up. I am fixing to try electrolisis just to see how good it will work.I hope some of the nay sayers see your video.

WOW! It works. I forgot to preheat but, it works like a charm. The pan is a 6 5/8 no.3 with a heat ring, didn't even see that, LOL. Guessing a Lodge, no other markings on it but a small 3 on the handle. Best 50 cents ever! Thank you for this.

Thats a beautiful wood stove! Whats the make and model? Also, I'd examine your flue/stovepipe if you do this even a few times a year because who knows how that mystery crust interacts with the creosote in your chimney

Great video. After you hose it off what are you using to scrub/clean it up with in the yard? Looks like soapy residue, is it a brillo pad and soap?

what kind of cleaning do you recommend for general cast-iron cleaning after use in cooking?

I was gifted a cast iron skillet from a work buddy(she's in her late 50's), it was her grandmothers.
I live in Norway, there are no makers mark on the pan, she said maybe her grandfather made it himself.
The only thing i know is that it's really old.
What's the safest way for me to remove the crud?

I have a small cast iron skillet that the cooking surface is wonderful, but the outside and the inside walls are really in bad shape. I have a wood stove and I have been thinking about trying to clean it but have been really concerned about losing the inter surface seasoning. Maybe I will give it a try.

That is a good way to ruin your pans. I would recommend setting up a lye bath. You could leave your pans in it for months without damaging them but it usually only takes a few days.

I take it you mean the grills and not the whole unit! I suppose it would work, but you might also check my channel for guidance on cleaning cast iron with electrolysis too.

  • @MrThemBlues
    @MrThemBlues 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I'm going to respectfully agree to disagree with you on this method. There's too much risk involved in using fire, especially if the person doesn't know what they are doing.
I've used electrolysis to remove rust off of some severely corroded and damaged pieces. It's extremely easy to do, very inexpensive, and runs zero risk of damaging the piece. And it's a completely thorough "refresh" of the piece - you truly start over from scratch with the raw cast iron as it originally came from the factory.
I would never put a piece in the fire.

Detergents should not normally be used for cleaning. The best fat for re-seasoning is saltless pork fat.

Fire will damage the pans. Use yellow cap Easy Off Oven cleaner in a trash bag. Or lye bath.

nothing can be easier and cheaper than what he did, free fire , no need to set up tank, soap, water power etc, pan looks dark, shiny, flat. id give it an A PLUS. if youd like to talk a bit more about this you can find me on instagram @sandiegoironman, take care.
