In 1825, the Sikh forces of Sardar Gurmukh Singh Lamba conquered the fort from the Gakhar chieftain Nur Khan. Rohtas was also thereafter used for administrative purposes by the Sikh Empire until its collapse by the British in 1849. Sardar General Gurmukh Singh Lamba was of eminent general of Maharaja Ranjit Singh ,he was wounded fifteen times ,eight times with musket balls, thrice by sword cuts ,thrice by spear thrust and once by an arrow. He was the recipient of highest military honour of izazi-i-Sardari and civil awards of Nirmal Bud (Pure Intelligence) and Ujjal Didar (Bright Looks). The title of Izazi-i-Sardari was the highest honour most distinguished Sikh generals such as Hari Singh Nalwa ,Sardar Gurmukh Singh Lamba and Dal Singh Nahema received . 2. Sardar was a great warrior, fearless soldier who participated in various campaigns. Sir Lepel Griffen ,famous writer of Sikh history writes in his book Chief of Punjab ”,The detail account of military services of Sardar would be the history of all wars of Sikh Empire” 3. ”He took part in many of campaigns of Ranjit Singh. His popularity, how ever made him incur the enmity of Main brothers who by their influence over Ranjit Singh ,reduced Sardar Gurmukh Singh power and wealth. On death bed Ranjit Singh is said to have realized the wrong done to his faithful follower and commissioned his son Kharak Singh to restore his former Jagirs. He also served under Raja Sher Singh” 4. The caption, brings out remarkable character quality of Maharaja, being on death bed ,how he was concerned about his followers and realizing injustice done ,accepting mistake, and carrying out corrective measures speaks volume of his courage and leadership qualities .Apart from this ,Sardar defeated Main brothers (Dogra Raja’s Gulab & Dahain Singh ) father Kishora Singh ,and always refused to toe in line with Main brothers who were not faithful to Khalsa Sarkar, but holding powerful position in Maharaja darbar 5. Joseph Devey Cunnighan an, official British historian was dismissed by Lord Dalhousie for leaking out ” Gulab Singh has a secret understanding with the British” .Shah Mohamed concludes “Sarkar Khalsa having won ultimately lost of treachery of men like Tej Singh & Main brothers (Raja Gulab and Dahain Singh) and conspiracy of British. 6. Sardar Gen Gurmukh Singh lamba was with Maharaja Ranjit Singh at the capture of Lahore in 1799. When Nar Singh Chamrari Wala died in 1806 his troops were placed under command of the Sardar. In 1807 ,he captured famous fort of Moranda (Kasur ) from the grand son of Ahmmed Shah Abdali where he was wounded with spear and was awarded Jagir of Kasur ,amounting to Rupees thirty five thousand per annum .He fought battles with Gourkha’s in 1809 and next year he was present in the reduction of Sahiwal and Khusab ,where the Afghans and the Kabul Wazir were driven from the Punjab and fought in Kashmir and all along the Northern-Western borders of the Province. 7. In 1813 ,he fought the battle of Attack, where he commanded a division and played a prominent role in the capture of famous fort of Attock build by the Akbar, grandson of Baber dominating the River Indus. River was crossed by the Maharaja with war cry “KhalsaJi ,Jeena-Ya- Marna” 8. The strength of Maharaja Ranjit Singh army stood at 50,000 in 1821. A new and novel institution of army consisting of all the three wings, namely Infantary, Cavarly and Artillery was raised by the Maharaja in 1822 , known as Fauj-i-Khas The Fauj-i-Khas was comprised of 11,000 Ghorcharas divided into 15 Derahs lead by eminent Sardars ,among them Sham Singh Atari wala,Sardar Gurmukh Singh Lamba, Hari Singh Nalwa and two non Sikhs,the Mulraj Derah and Dogra Derah. 9. The Fauj-i-Khas was best contingent of Maharaja, well dressed, well armed and well disciplined having a high degree of perfection trained by two ex generals of Napoleon Bonaparte Jean Ventura & Allared who participated in the battle of Water Loo where Genral Ventura trained Infantry & General Allared trained Cavalry & Artillery. 10 . In1825,Sardar captured the famous fort of Rothas ( UNECO World Heritage Fort ) from Ghakhar Cheif Nur Khan father of Fazil Dad Khan,but due to enmity of Sardar with Dogra’s Rajas Gulab and Dhain Singh, where sardar had defeated their father Main Kishora Singh having influence over the Maharaja, the fort was given to Sardar Mohar Singh, but when Mohar Singh retired to Banaras against the wishes of Maharajas the fort and his troops,(contingent of 700 horse and men were placed ) under the command of the Sardar. 11. The Sardar was of medium stature, but due to long command he was popularly being addressed by the Maharaja as Lammba Sardar .Where few historian believe that Mohar Singh was extremely tall personality, sardar took the name of Mohar Singh lamba as his contingent was placed under him. 12. In1832 ,When the Sikh army on way to Bannur under General Tatra Chand was defeated by Dilsha Khan,the coward general fled ,leaving prodigious guns in the hands of enemy,Sardar General Gurmukh Singh Lamba charged at the head of his horse men and recaptured prodigious guns on his own. 13. 18 KM, East of Peshawar, Jamrud Fort was build by Sikhs in 1823 to mark the western edge of their empire. The observation tower on the first ridge and the fort on the top of centre hill in depth 14 . In 1936,Sardar Hari Singh Nalwa started to rebuild the fort ,it became a alarm for Afghans. When Sikh army was concentrated at Lahore to take part in celebration of Kanwar Nau Nihal Singh (Grand son of Maharaja Ranjit Singh ) marriage. Main Brothers (Dogras Raja Gulab and Dahain Singh ) had passed secret information to the Afghans ,encouraged by this, Dost Mohammed Khan ,the king of Kabul laid a siege of the fort with twenty to twenty five thousand troops when about one thousand sikhs were inside the fort ,highly in balanced of forces, and declared a Jhaid against the Sikhs 15. On 23 April 1837,heavy fighting took place between Sikhs and Afghans. Afghans were forced to lift the siege and retreated. Sikh extended their boundary till the Kyber Pass .The Sikh general Hari Singh Nalwa was wounded and later died. His samadhi still exist inside the fort .Khalsa Sarkar Wizar Jawahar Singh nominated General Sardar Gurmukh Singh Lamba as military and political commander to safe guard the gains of Khalsa Sarkar and to defend the fort of Jamrud.The round pinkish castle that stands to day is a British construction. 16. With death of Ranjit Singh 1839 the Sikh Rule was threaten by powerful British in India .In August 1847 , the sardar was appointed with Sardar Bur singh of Mokerian, to take charge of Rani Jindan whom it was necessary to confine in the fort of Shaikhu Pura, and discharged his difficult duties with fidelity and discretion, till the out break of the Multan disturbances, The Rani was sent down to the country. 17 Sardar General Gurmukh Singh Lamba was highly respected personality at one time having Jagirs of 3.5 Lac of Rupees thousand per annum” His sketch portrait painting is displayed at Central Museum Lahore. Sardar Jagirs areas were Naushera in Sahapur,Pindi Lala,Doburj,Chak wasava,Kot Star Ruk Gurmukh Singh(Bara Dari ) and Qila Sardar Atar Singh . 18. To day the town ship exist by the name Qila Sardar Atar Singh. The fort was build by the sardar on name of his son Sardar Atar Singh, Where he resided with his son Sardar Atar Singh Lamba .Sardar Atar Singh died 1880 His son Sardar Gyain Singh Lamba was a highly influential personality of Gujrat (Pakistan ) ,having Lahore Darbar seat at his credit. After staying at Qila Sardar Atar Singh he moved to Bara Dari ( New Palace Build) 19. Sardar General Gurmukh Singh Lamba,born in village Khewa on the right bank of River Jhelum,near Jalapur.Sardar had a Havali known as Havali Sardar Gyan Singh at Dinga and Havali and Mohala Sardar Gyan Singh at Yakki Darwaja Lahore ,having two sons Sardar Tara Singh Lamba and Sardar Har krishan Singh Lamba. . 21. After the death of Sardar Tara Singh Lamba,he was living with the younger son Sardar Har krishan Singh Lamba at Bara Dari( New family palaces at Rakh Gurmukh Singh ) on axis Callian walla-Mandi Bahaudin. Sardars family was well respected and the entire family was united .Apart from managing their daily affairs , Sardar’s frequently used to go on Sikar 22. With passage of time ,due to neglect and want of repair the condition of the fort Qila Sardar Atar Singh detracted ,walls started collapsing on their own ,hidden “Royal Treasure of the family” was discovered and confiscated by the Government of Pakistan in 1951.
