I used to do this River all the time back in 2017 and 2018 but shortly after became disabled and now I can no longer kayak. So being able to watch it brings me great joy, thank you for recording this. A great trip down memory lane for me
Nice video , grew up 1/2 mile above Goat Island. The center run between stoney creek and Goat Island that is best run on the right side side of the V is a spot Eddie S. and I cleared out of a lot of rocks to make it an easier run , this took a big prybar and lots of sweat which we had the time and energy back in the 70's. this is straight across from the Cypress trees planted on the right bank which I planted 20 plus years ago to hold in a caving bank. We have run the river from Brooks Bridge all the way to mermaid point . Oh and Riskys falls all the locals Just call it "The Falls" The second house down from Stoney Creek was Dicky Coleman's House who has run the entire length to the ocean and there was a cabin there in the 1800's and eary 1900's and his great grandfather had a pet bear and it was chained to a big oak there. Julian Coleman, owner of Coleman's clothing in Burlington back in the day had picture of that bear on his wall. His granddad found it as a cub on the other side of the river on the land that Jim Copland now owns down to Goat Island.
also, there used to be dam on the Haw named Sellars hence the road Sellars Mill Rd and it was aprox 200 yards above stoney creek. The mill race from it dumped into stoney creek. It washed out sometime in the late 1800's . there was also a dam down near goat Island. I learned how to canoe from Glenco to The Falls. My dad would go to work and drop me off at Carolina Mill or Glencoe and I would paddle back to the house. This section of river from the 80's to 2010 i would put against any river in the state for size and numbers of bass but it took a bad turn in July of 2010 and imho I still dont think it has recovered. we were the first to report a massive fish kill that had dead fish in Buffalo Creek all the way to goat Island. We were on a fishing trip that am when it was found. see mackinncblog.blogspot.com/2010/07/made-trip-on-mighty-haw-in-late-july-10.html
Thanks for the history! Nice blog as well. I love hearing the backstories about any river, esp my local one. I did a source to sea on the Haw a few years back and have run the Haw from Rockingham county just north of Greensboro (where it is 8 feet wide) to the coast 4 years ago. Amazing trip. You owe it to yourself to put in at buckhorn dam just below mermaid point and run to Erwin...a really pretty stretch of river albeit it is now the Cape Fear at that point. Thanks again for all the input and info!
RK, I really want to applaud you on this video! Kudos are in order. I really appreciate the voice over instructing and explaining the trip! It was amazing, and I absolutely picked up some awesome tips to use in my future Kayaking! This is one my favorites from you. :) Cheers! oOH...I almost forgot, loved how you panned down the satellite map too.
YakkelBerry , thanks man! You said you needed more than music...lol. I have some requests for this and thought I would give it a go...several videos in this series coming.
Lol, ya man I'm looking forward to the series. I really like getting to know the person taking the video, what they like, don't like, and just like this video, your tips and tricks. I learn sooooo much just from youtube videos, it is unreal, so ya these vids are sweet!
Great video! my home river literally in my back yard, ran it for yrs, we've always heard the Big Kahuna called the Dog Leg. I imagine it has many names.
Thanks John. While the Haw is never super clear, there are definitely several levels of brown that it can achieve. For the Haw, it is a little browner than normal at this level...about like heavily creamed coffee...he he he
