Have known Judy since we were both 18...frequented same jazz clubs in Melbourne. Well knew the bands she sang with.....so lively to hear her beloved husband, Ron, before he was robbed by a dreadful health issue .. so.many memories of Judy. ❤😊
I cry almost every time I see her or listen to her. She's so wonderful! But, watching this is one of the first times I've been able to watch her with a wonderous joy. This brought forth a smile. Miss her. God Blessed us and that's the JD that is beyond compare.
Her first love was jazz. She started singing with a top australian jazz group Frank Trainer's Jazz Preachers when she was 18. The seekers were later - folk pop.
One of the finest singers I have ever heard. There is no style of music she cannot sing. Hard to recognize her from her years in the Seekers because of her hairstyle. Also love her to the moon and back.
Judith - love the short hair but for me youre a 70's Gal n im a 70's guy, the best era for me. youre the best, So many Thanks, you have given So much Pleasure listening to your music/voice, God bless you and the guys always
I feel that Seekers fans who dismiss this part of Judith's musical career may be missing a very important point. She developed a fascination early on for traditional jazz and pursued it with great passion singing, recording, and developing her style with Frank Traynor and the Jazz Preachers before joining with the Seekers in 1963. Judith never was your typical folk singer. She's a powerful belter with a bold and edgy vocal resonance who can easily switch to the soft sweetness of a gentle lullaby...''Little Moses''. These are the wonderful features that allow her to contribute to that amazing and deliciously unique Seekers sound that we all cherish. This is what I hear when I listen and why I enjoy just about everything this talented lady has done during her entire recording career....starting in 1961. As strange as it might sound, I think jazz played an important part in that one-of-a-kind sound that the boys could never quite capture with another singer. jtk🍁
One of the more valuable pieces of footage on TH-cam, IMO. Judy Durham, jazz singer in the grand Bessie Smith style, looks and sounds great. Her sister Beverley stuck to jazz, and has more Billie in her.
This not what is associated with Judith. How fantastic her voice ever was, it is so fortunate that she returned to the Seekers eventually and for which she will for ever be remembered. This just simply does not do it for her. But by and large Judith was a phenomenon equalled by none and loved by millions as a Seeker.
It's not my kind of thing either - but _she_ enjoys it, and those who do like it say she was very good at it. It's not our place to say she/they shouldn't do it if the wanted!
@marco brenni "harder sounding voice"... As befits the style. In these two songs Ron's piano playing also has a hard harsh edge. Not my favourite style of music but obviously one that appealed to Judith from an early age(when she tells us she also wanted to be an opera singer...another very very different style). Kiri the Kanawa a great Kiwi opera singer and diva always sounded a little "off" when she did crossover to the more popular songs she herself loved. But why shouldn't a great artist like Judith Durham or Kiri te Kanawa explore the fullest possible range of their musical gifts and interests
@jdadmirer She does look and sound great. But the Seekers didn't sing "ditties" then and they don't today. They produce timeless, intelligent and evocative music--a fact Judith herself came to recognize and embrace. See them again this October, live in Australia...
At 5: 28 - 5:42..."Slow & Easy" Jazz developed as a "Pop Art" by the one of the most creative entertainers in the business. Jazz owes a lot to the Spirit & Creativity of Entertainers like Judith Durham. hmm, Veritas, Jamieson (Peter)
All musical artists must resist resting on their laurels and singing the songs that made them famous ad infinitum ad nauseum. And so they look for new channels, new venues. Happened to the Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel, etc. (Imagined 60 year old Beatles singing "Do you Want to Hold My Hand?" The mind boggles.
Doesn't stop me @Steven Torrey from delighting in hearing their anniversary concerts on line where from Aotearoa/NZ I can see the evolving of their stage presence and some of the fascinating mechanics of performance and artistic relationship (s)
She's always spot-on pitch but this idiom of music, ie, American style blues/jazz, is a bit mismatched for Judith in my opinion. It's a bit strange. I can't tell if I like it or not. She's not deep enough in her range to really match this style.
I don't know if it was Ron's idea, but not for me, sounds like she's struggling a bit. Very sad about Ron Edgeworth, but I'm glad she's back performing with the seekers.
Thomas Kallmyrför 1 sekund sedanFantastic Voice of Judith Durham, and Three men and they have been together so long, like a Family should be.....mostly there are Divorcing and in Berlin, who many is still after one year together after marriage,of 66 pairs only ONE PAIR still together.....
Ok love Judith to the moon and back and honestly believe she has one of the finest & purest voices of all time BUT! sorry no Jazz or short hair i am sorry to say
Her voice IMHO is as well suited to this type of singing as Folk singing. In this she can sing in the low er tones and with wider expression/greater depth. Her husband ain't bad either. As to her hair, well, is need fluff but she is supposed to have felt her jawline was too wide.
I respectively disagree. Judith Durham may be able to sing in the lower tones, but this rendition doesn't really show that. Compare Ella Fitzgerald singing Basin Street Blues (eg with Louis Armstrong).
My goodness - Joan Bakewell introducing Judith Durham! The two of them talk at 2:50. What a unique piece of film. One has to say that this diversion into Jazz-type singing did not suit Judith and as for the fashion style of both these well-known people, it's awful. The Seventies fashions really were not good and Judith's hairstyle here is better forgotten.
These two have created something fresh and unique in trad jazz and I find it quite exciting. She's all aglow, doing great music with the love of her life....puts a smile on my face.
As great as Judith is -- that's how BAD this interviewer is. In the U.S. an entertainer would walk out on such insulting questions ...or at least ask, "Are you kidding?"
The hair stylist did not sync the layers with her head. There is nothing worse on a women’s head then a half inch layer. First layer should have fallen to the ear. Then soft whisps. Hair stylist that chop hair and not frame a face, should be sent to a master to learn. Unfortunately, the are few stylists that can perfectly cut hair for face shape and colics. It’s a beyond terrible haircut, on top of her head.
How can jazz not suit Judith? She is just the best at it! Have you heard the album The Hottest Band In Town? Well, I guarantee that will change your opinion.
I'm unable to decide whether you mean that she performs this material "better" or that the actual musical content of American jazz & blues is superior. But stylistically, the pop/folk genre of the Seekers is so different than what she's doing here, that I don't believe that any direct comparison of the two is especially meaningful or particularly productive. The nuances of vocal technique aren't identical, and the fact that Judith has maintained her voice well over a considerable amount of time indicates that she treating her her physical vocal attributes quite well.
Let's get a million views for this special lady

Precious heart died today, August 6, 2022. God just won the Vocal Lottery.
They were a great couple along with the Guys from the Seekers , I'll miss little Judith very much , she will be singing with the Angels tonight. 🎶🙏
She is singing with her husband ,Ron on Piano. What a beautiful couple.
She could turn her hand , and voice, to anything ...... the girl just had class.
Unmistakable Durham whatever the genre. Brilliant as usual, and husband Ron, oh my God, what a duo!

Fantastic and genuine xxx
Judith pode cantar até sambão e pagode do Brasil, que ficarão lindas.
This old song could be done by anyone but Judith sings it with a wonderful voice!!!!
Judith's hair style and jazz voice does not change a thing she is still Judith and she is great
Judith - love the short hair but for me youre a 70's Gal n im a 70's guy, the best era for me. youre the best, So many Thanks, you have given So much Pleasure listening to your music/voice, God bless you and the guys always
Great Piano and vocal!
Totally love Judith singing jazz! This is the best!!Ron sure could play the piano!
I saw them at Ainslie Footy Club Canberra in the mid to late 80s. Class acts!
Absolutely amazing!
Pure talent....She can do no wrong with me

@john king thanks John King for putting this into such eloquent words.
This is very good, and nice to hear Judith singing music she loves - I've never seen this clip (or indeed, this side of Judith) before.
Everything she does is exceptional, she would have been incredibly popular in Bayou country.
Lovely to hear both Ron and Judith chatting to Joan Bakewell as well as Judith singing and Ron playing the piano.Excellent!

Have always loved her, what a voice ❤
How did the Sacramento Jazz Jubilee not get these two to appear? Sad that it can never be.
Yes.
Short hair is just fine, Judith is a great singer and entertainer, what a girl.
yeh husband and wife ron passed away I loved the seekers but Judith still has a great
This not what is associated with Judith.

wow yeah, i would not know that is her if it did not say so. very different look for Judith but still very lovely!!!!
A far cry from Georgy girl, but none the less a class act she'll always be...no matter what she does imo!
Omg❤
She could belt ‘ it with the best.
A really surprsing new looking Judith, with a harder sounding voice

She was very young when singing with the seekers. She was a mature woman at this video time
@@marilynwoolford-chandler1161 : Thanks!
@@kerrinorourke5914 - of sure!

Oh I've never seen Judith with short hair,it quite nice.
Same
i have been watching many of her videos, but haven't seen any with her hair like this.
She could also play Ragtime piano like her life depended on it! Definitely NOT a One Trick Pony!
I think she's a better pianist than Ron, even! And that's saying a lot.
Very good it’s different
Trad Jazz not my cup of tea but my God could she belt out a song and her husband Ron was pretty awesome
I think Judith can sing almost everything, she is easy on the ear and she had Ron to steer her through the tricky b its.

She looks ok with short hair but does not look like the same person.
She left the Seekers do do this? Bizzare.
She needed to vary her career fro just banging out the same old hits with the Seekers
No, she didn't leave The Seekers to do this. She was doing this BEFORE The Seekers.
I agree. She should have stayed with the Seekers and done some of this on the side if she wanted. They could have lasted a lot longer.
Yes,wasted 20nyears ,in Europe singing jazz ,
Ok love Judith to the moon and back and honestly believe she has one of the finest & purest voices of all time BUT! sorry no Jazz or short hair i am sorry to say
It’s what she always wanted to sing, so...anyway, she looks wonderfully updated in this video, and she was happy doing it.

the same to me
Give the girl a break for Chrits sake. She is a great jazz singer and Ron was a great jazz pianist.

Just shows how professional Judith is, and how rude, self important bores Usaans are
Oh no Judith 😢. Love you but not Jazz xx

Agree. I like her MUCH better with long hair. I wonder if she thought the same because she later wore her hair long again.
She was very good at it, but somehow it didn't suit her. The Seekers as a group just worked.
All about opinions. I thought this suited her equally as well as The Seekers style.
It was a pity that she didn't stay with them, they needed a piano player.it would have been perfect.
Love her but shes not ever at all a singer of jazz.
Jazz does not suit Judith. It may be her first love, but..........
Not quite “black” enough, a quality I can identify but not describe.
How can jazz not suit Judith? She is just the best at it! Have you heard the album The Hottest Band In Town? Well, I guarantee that will change your opinion.

Rubbish!
Nobody looked good in the 80's.
Agnetha from Abba did"
Olivia NJ did.
Linda from the Stone Ponies did.

im sorry , this is terrible...
