I did this because of your video. I’m curious how the heck you did this without a mask inside the airstream. The fumes from this stuff felt like it was gonna kill me
Your channel has been an inspiration. Thanks. Is there a preferred why to remove the edge trim from in interior skins? The plastic trim is cracked and broken I'm wondering if it can be replaced?
Great video, i followed your directions and it worked well. It didn't peel off as easy as yours but it worked! Quick question, now that the vinyl is off I can now see all of the holes (so many holes)... should I be replacing this sheet of aluminum or is there a work around/fix for "patching" the holes - detail 1976 Argosy 20 -reno
might have helped break the bond w the glue and softne things up yes - but I'd still do what he did to actually move the stuff off the surface - less scrapes on the aluminium ^^
Do I have to derivet the box and the window frame covers and stuff or can i just paint and peel? Seems liek I could just pull it from under like a sticker when it gets to the point where it is stretchy?
So I'm about to get started doing that next week. How long did it take you to do that one section. trying to get a time frame to see how long it will take me. You did time laps so It was hard to tell the total amount of time.
Question; I’m just trying this and finding the vinyl does not come of NEARLY as easy as your video shows. Peels off in layers, then small pieces. Should you not even try to pick it off until you’ve applied like 4-5 coats?
Hi.. I am at the stage now where I either can use my old walls or create new ones. I plan to paint the aluminum. I changed the layout so i imagine patches and new holes cut would be necessary PLUS having to remove the vinyl. Ugh. My question is though, isn't the top panel one long piece from the factory? did you reuse that one? I was thinking of maybe just taking the vinyl off that one long piece and reusing it, and doing all new aluminum for the rest. Did you go with 5052 or 2024?
Stripping the vinyl is a huge pain and in no way worth it! My top center piece was destroyed pulling it out. If you have yours, you could do that. I used separate pieces to create the center on both builds I have done. It wouldn't be horrible to strip the vinyl on just that one piece. Just be careful installing it so you don't destroy it. Also when with painting aluminum, know that you have to prep the surface by sanding it. You technically can get painted aluminum panels but they are about $100 more for a 10x4 ft sheet. So that will add about $1200 to the total cost of aluminum roughly. I used 5052. I would certainly use the cheapest you can find if you are painting since the surface quality isn't important.
@@MillerGarage great advice. However, I thought that regardless of paint, the skins do provide some structural integrity to the trailer, no? I mean or is that coming from the .032 thickness? Yea, i looked into powder coated sheets but I want a blush color and i cant get that easily, not white. Do you think I can use the old walls as templates? My walls are actually in pretty good shape, but I just think stripping them as you said is gonna be a lot of work and time. How much money do you think I should estimate for new walls? I have a 22 foot trailer and I already did the segmented encaps ( thanks to you!).
For the life of me I can’t get half the glue off these two panels. I’ve used a whole bottle of jasco on the door panels and it’s not working. Half came off yesterday but today it’s like it’s not bubbling anymore. So frustrated
Yeaaa, that is the worst process. I refuse to reuse original skins. Part of the problem is the Jasco no longer has the effective (albeit highly caustic and toxic) ingredient that it once did. I have heard that heat guns work well also. Best of luck!
a quick question for you my wife thought of. looking at some of our interior skins there is alot of holes from stuff like the original curtain guides and stuff like that which wont be reinstalled. did you do something to fill holes like those or did you just remake the interior skins with new aluminum?
Hey, so I filled them with rivets in the rear sections. A lot of the really bad spots will be covered by cabinets or final trim/decor stuff. The front (door forward) is all new aluminum. Next one I do will be all new. Its more expensive but you avoid patches and extra rivets plus avoid all the time spent cleaning. And the bare aluminum looks awesome.
@@MillerGarage this is good to know as we were looking at stripping vinyl but weren't sure what to do with all the holes. It does make sense to just remake using the old as templates. the more I think about it the more i think there are some areas/joints that are less than ideal looking. where did you buy your aluminum for the interior walls from?
@@Crazybarracuda I have heard people saying the Jasco doesn't work well now and I think they reformulated it. I had to apply it thick several times over 30 minutes to get the results but then it just peeled right off in one piece. But yea, that whole process is a huge nasty pain in the butt.
Ian, thanks for all your vids on the airstream. I've learned a lot following you. Question - What was your final decision on stripping all of the interior panels using this method? Would you recommend stripping with panels still attached on walls or removed and laid down flat?
I ended up not stripping them all. I replaced panels in the front section with new aluminum and painted the panels in the back. On the next one I will do 100% all new aluminum. Its just not worth the effort and cost of chemicals to strip the vinyl.
The Seek First Adventure You do a great job of explaining things. I have a. 1983 AS 31’ Excella. And Trying to get educated and inspiration to do this and the windows myself.
Its a preference thing. Some people like the bare aluminum. After doing a little of it tho, I may choose a different route due to the huge amount of work and chemical use/cost to do this.
It's awesome there is aluminum under the vinyl. I was considered trying some heat, but that looks like it works.

Very helpful channel brother. I'm wondering if a heat gun would have done the trick to get the vinyl off as well??
might have helped break the bond w the glue and softne things up yes - but I'd still do what he did to actually move the stuff off the surface - less scrapes on the aluminium ^^
Super helpful info, thanks!

what did you do after you removed the vinyl? what did you put in its place???
I did not remove it all. I don't suggest doing it personally. Way too much work. Just buy new aluminum, it will be cheaper if you account for time.

what thickness aluminum did you use to replace the skins? .032, .040?
.032
Anyone ever used an infrared paint stripper to do this?

Since I had a small container of the jasco I figured I would try it and wow I am getting no where near the results you were
