I’ve seen Mike perform live a couple times. His voice is the real deal and no auto tune required for him. Check out some of his studio releases and his production skills are amazing too
lol there is so much auto tune in there. He might not need it but he is using it.

Seems like it wasn't appreciated even remotely as much as it should have been at the time.
Been listening to Masse for a year or so now.
I believe what makes his voice unique is the honesty in his voice. One can hear his appreciation for the music. He isn’t just belting out another cover song. So many “try to hard”, where as he is just relaxed and enjoying singing to us as much as we do listening.

Mike Massé was a Public Defender. Played a massive amount of covers of music ranging from Elvis to present day, with a rotating cadre of about 4 other guys, in his spare time. His voice can do decent emulations of the delivery styles of a wide variety of artists.
He's finally made music his full-time job.
He also did a live cover of Africa with The MonaLisa Twins.
Hi Beth, yes , this the most popular cover by Mike Masse, but I really, like Really suggest to listen to Mikes cover of "Scarborough Fair/Canticle" together with Sterling Cottam! I'm not quite sure but I think not even Simon and Garfunkel were singing this live in quite that way with the interlocking phrases...

It’s important to note the original recording of Africa used two different vocalists, David Paich took the lead vocal on the verse and Bobby Kimball took the lead vocal on the chorus, as no one had the vocal range to sing both, yet Mike Massè performs the entire song, singing everything with harmonies from Jeff. Mike is an incredible talent.

The husband and I went to see Mike live a few years ago. Was a really fun night of live acoustic music and at many points turned into a sing along. Fun night and nice guy. His stories about Toto contacting him about this video is very funny. He became friendly with the band.

Mike Masse has his own TH-cam Channel and a lot of fantastic covers of other songs. This is by far my favorite cover of this song.
This guy is hands down one my favorites. You should definitely give him a listen even if you don’t react. his version of “in my life” live from Liverpool, his cover of rush’s “Time stand still” are probably my top two. Absolutely worth taking a trip down this rabbit hole

5:30 I´ve always had that feel when listening to this song, that incstinct Beth mentioned. Those high notes by the lead if you listen to them accapella, almost sound anoying, but not really, then that voice merges perfectly with the backup and the instruments, and becomes a masterpiece(for example, there are really high monotone notes that are really sustained for severeal steps.)
It makes me think of a wedding singer that we always cringe for, but it´s just becausewe didn´t gave it time to show us the full ansamble.
I love that you found Mike Masse. I've been listening to these covers for years. I also love his versions of "I still haven't found what I'm looking for" and "Fake Plastic Trees".

My favorite version of this song other than Toto is a school band and choir. Africa le Toto as Gaeilge. I check out different versions from time to time. Glad to hear this one. Stay ginger, I love it.

I am sure the two of these guys had sang together with each other for quite a while before this recording was made! Beth, I don't detect any "effects" other that just the normal reverb any etc. most live-artists use in small venues. (These guys are obviously very GOOD raw!) They were rehearsed on this song! (Most likely because they love the song themselves personally!) Since it turned out as "near to flawless" as could be wished for, they posted this version online! And, when Toto saw it and proclaimed it "best cover", Mike & Jeff found a HUGE feather in their cap!
Now, I am inspired to attempt this over-done song on my guitalele.
(Hmm... I need to find someone to do the harmony and/or overdub it. The blend of the voices is what "makes" this song!)

I was lucky enough to see Mike Masse play live in the Pie Pizzeria many times as I attended school at tue University of Utah from about 1999-2005 and continued to stop in once in a while for years after that.
I'd forgotten about these guys! Africa is such a great harmony piece to cover 😁 Jared Halley's is another one of my favorites.
Mike is the real deal. No autotune. He just turns up the reverb on his mic
I am old enough to remember the original version. This song was EVERYWHERE. It was in ads, movies, TV, and blasted on the radio. I do believe my local radio station had to ask people to space out their requests for this song because they were playing it too much! It is still a great song, but this cover..wow!

I remember when they released the original album with this cut on it. This acoustic version is totally unexpected in terms of how actually it's better than when the entire band is playing this. Really phenomenal version, this should have been cut as a single. Dare to compare, Rosanna?

Needed a ginger fix. Thanx. My favorite Toto Africa cover is "Toto Africa as Gaeilge" I think a high school aged choir thing. And I generally hate what choirs do to this song. Don't know how i found it but glad I did. May have been when I was checking out the UCD Choral Scolars "mo grilled mear".

He uses an effects pedal. He gets reverb and sometimes uses it for harmonies, but I am pretty sure he never uses auto-tune.

I suggest watch his live streams, check out his videos, come to his shows. He never uses auto tune. I work with him for a couple years now, auto tune is not in his books.

I can't remember if it is the original writer or the lead singer of Toto, but I recall a story that Mike told about when he met them, that the guy makes people listen to this song when he has guests over to his house. I want to say it's the writer of the song, but my memory is complete garbage.

I’ve eaten pizza here - it’s in a bland as hell suburban strip mall and is the last place you’d expect to hear such a great musical performance. Kudos to whoever set up their recording equipment because it’s gotta be an absolutely terrible place to try to capture sound well. Pizza is great though!
