Ram Dass (Richard Alpert; 1931 -2019), was an American spiritual teacher, writer and psychologist. Disillusioned with the consumerist world, Ram Dass sought a path to the salvation of human consciousness through Hindu mystical teachings.
In the 1970s he began teaching psychology at Harvard University, where he immersed himself in the study of psychedelic drugs.
At the end of the decade, he went to India and studied under the Hindu guru Neem Karoli Baba, who would give Richard Alpert his new name, meaning "Servant of God".
When he returned to the United States, Ram Dass became a guru himself, giving lectures on self-knowledge throughout the country.
