  • Another season has finished and so it's time, yet again, to get out our red sharpies and start grading. We'll be once again looking at the lead, production, the cast and the romance in this review Katie Thurston's season of The Bachelorette (Season 17). A season that I think... was one that was all about control.

    It's such a shame that production left out key conversations like the one Katie had with Desiree after Greg left, which really makes it clear why she ended up with Blake. It felt like they were trying to paint her into settling for what was left.

    • @minasbaguette889
      @minasbaguette889 2 ปีที่แล้ว +69

      No that’s not it. That was just there by production to make the audience feel bad for Katie. Which after Katie treated the bachelor staff horribly, they axed. If you follow the bachelor staff on Instagram, no one congratulated her.
      Katie herself confessed that “I knew I loved Blake during hometowns” and that “my feelings for Greg vanished the minute he left”. She never loved Greg and just played him. If you argue with Katie herself admitting to all of this on after the final rose, I feel bad for you.
      Edit: Katie fans who have their rose colored glasses on. It is a mofo fact that none of the bachelor producers, hairstylists, makeup artists or even Kary the wardrobe stylist congratulated Katie after she got engaged. They even were nicer to Clare Crawley and congratulated her.
      The girls on Matt's season all disliked Katie we saw this on women tell all.
      The guys, Connor, Andrew and Justin all came out to support Greg.
      This is not my assumption, it's a fact. Accept that.

    Honestly production has gone from problematic to toxic. I loved Katie and though the cast were great, but the way that they edited it, and how they keep focusing on the drama instead of the relationships being formed, all just pisses me off. I give production an F-.
    Also, it didn’t have to be cut so short, they could have shown us more of the relationships developing, instead of focusing so much on Greg. Also, the fact that they showed her and Greg talking on ATFR after the engagement just shows how little production cared about sharing the love story.

    • @minasbaguette889
      @minasbaguette889 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Let’s review the facts, apparently Katie treated the staff so terribly no one congratulated her. And I mean none of the field producers follow her. None of the executive producers follow her. They did not congratulate her like they do other bachelorettes. Not even Kary the stylist likes her, he didn't post her congratulations post on instagram and hasn't posted her since June, (did you notice at the end she was dressing herself?). THIS IS ABNORMAL BECAUSE THE STAFF REGULARLY FOLLOWS ALL THE OTHER BACHELORETTES, OR AT THE VERY LEAST WISHES THE HAPPY COUPLE CONGRATULATIONS AFTER THE FINAL ROSE. You have to do mental gymnastics to say that is all a coincidence, it's clear they don't like Katie.
      The girls on Matt season hated her, and have said so on after the rose how she was trying to stir up drama to be bachelorette on the show. How her personality is terrible. This is all recorded. They also don't follow her, congratulated her on the bachelorette, or hang out with her in NYC.
      Even the guys in the house are siding with Greg, Connor and Justin came out in support of Greg. They are all liking his posts on social media. Justin is hanging out with Greg right now in NYC. Justin even tweeted "he wishes he could say all that he wanted to say"
      What is the common denominator? Katie

      It’s even worse on the bachelor. It feels wrong that they don’t show friendships between the women, only the drama. Like they’re trying to portray catty, mean girl behavior from women. There were friendships on matt James season I didn’t know about until after from the cast. At least with the guys they show both the friendships and fights.

    I find it interesting that production decided to really highlight the men that ended up essentially dumping Katie (Greg, Andrew, Michael,) and gave almost no time to Justin or honestly Blake either.... • @hommefataltaemin
    @hommefataltaemin 2 ปีที่แล้ว +415

    There are only two things I would change. I don’t think Katie as a lead was perfect but I think she was a lot more real with people and with the audience than a lot of others. She herself was quite wonderful and I think she deserves a B. She def made some mistakes but they’re always things that we have already observed to be part of her personality anyways for the most part.
    Think of Matt James where you left the season not knowing him barely at all, and Katie is different than that for sure. We got to know Katie much more.
    The other thing I would change is the casting grade which I would make slightly higher due to there being no horrible and toxic bullying like in SO many of the past seasons. The final guys all did love her even if flawed. There was no one like Luke P.
    You have always said that you hate that drama and want less of it, and that’s what happened. Yes the here for the right reasons squad was super annoying. But it’s a step up from villains of past seasons for sure.

    Having read Rachael Lindsay’s article about her journey on the franchise made me not to believe everything i see on the show. Production has a lot of control on how things play out.
    The promos were bad. They promoted the hosts more than Katie (by looking at the ABC website ).They made Greg look dull and boring. They made Hunter look like a villain. They never showed the romance between Justin and Katie (including that “honey moon” scene Fantake pointed out in the previous recaps). The Greg and Katie scene seems to be edited (Katie did not just say I love looking at you. She wiped his tears at some point). The Greg montage was weird.
    The ATFR was recorded shortly after the final episode (which means both Greg and Katie were still hurt and angry about the break up). Katie had just seen Greg talking down on her and telling her he deserves better. Greg also had to see Katie not giving him the response he was expecting. Hence, Katie reacted the way that she did towards Greg (which was just as wrong) and Greg said he did not regret anything. However on Nick’s podcast he admitted that he was wrong to put so much pressure and expectations on Katie. Similarly, Katie replied to Madison’s tweet ( it was something about not trusting the words that come out of your mouth when your heart is wounded) which Katie said “I wish I knew that before the ATFR”
    I therefore assume that they both regret the way they treated each other but did not have a chance to clear the air because they’ve already messed it up at the ATFR.

    Did anyone else feel Katie’s season had the same problem with editing? I feel like we didn’t get to know any of the guys apart from Greg. It was impossible for me to get involved in anyone except Andrew S because unlike the other guys besides Greg, he had screen time. Blake was Katie’s final pick but we never got to see them together. Justin lasted that long but we never got to see them together or see the bond they say they made and were sad that viewers didn’t see it.
    Honestly my biggest problem with this season was enjoying myself with seeing Katie bond with someone and then editing going back to the “Here for the Right Reasons” brigade and I immediately got frustrated and turned it off halfway through.
    The editing isn’t as bad as Matt’s season but it’s still really up there. After Andrew was sent home I lost even more interest. Not the worst season ever and not the worst bachelorette ever but it’s also…just mediocre. The production clearly didn’t care that much.

And watching that in comparison with Katie’s I’m just like, what happened to the editing? I feel like I didn’t get to know anyone apart from Greg and maybe Andrew S.

    Production gets an F
    - they didn't try even an ounce to make Katie's promos look good
    - they didn't dress Katie very well, in fact they put her in weird outfits and focused all their hair, makeup, wardrobe attention on Tayshia and Kaitlyn
    - they could have done a better job in promos in regards to Greg leaving, they could have hyped that up more the same way they did with coltons fence jump and they didnt
    - they seemed a lot more interested in making tayshia and Kaitlyn shine than they did Katie. Katie was always like this extra person in the photos instead of the star. when they posted photos online from each episode there were way more photos of taysha and Kaitlyn than there were of Katie

    I feel like C for the overall season was an accurate grade, though I think you scored Katie a little low as the lead & production higher than they deserved. I would say:
    Katie: B
    The Men: B
    Romance: C-
    Production: D
    Katie: B
    I thought overall, Katie did a good job as Bachelorette. She made some mistakes, as humans tend to do, but overall I think she was a good lead. Will I ever rewatch this season? Nope. But it was far from the worst season in recent years.
    The Men: B
    I actually liked the majority of the men. They seemed to be mostly a good group of guys & seemed to really get along with one another. I don't remember a cast getting along this well in the history of this franchise. Could have done without the Right Reasons Gang, but even those guys weren't that bad.
    Romance: C-
    I feel like the romance was hurt by production, who I'm saving for last. They basically focused on Greg and Michael A. which means we saw very little of the other relationships forming. Then they were both gone and it was Blake romance in under an hour. It was definitely jarring & it would have been nice to see some of the other relationships Katie formed, like her relationship with Justin. This feels like what they did on Rachel's season where they emphasized her relationship with Peter making her love of Bryan seem like it came out of no where. I think there was a lot of Katie & Blake together that we did not see because production wanted to tell another story this season.
    Production: D
    Production. Oh production (smh). Why can't they just show what is actually happening rather than trying to craft a narrative that no one wants to see. It's reality tv. If there is more than person, there will be conflict & drama. There is no need to manufacture it. I get there will be heavy editing. It would just be nice if the editing actually made a cohesive compelling story worth watching. Every week after the show, clips would show up so we could see everything we missed which was far more interesting than what we were shown. I will never forgive them for thinking that the audience would rather watch men exchange stupid insults that belonged on an elementary school playground instead of enjoying time with Drag Race royalty Shea Couleé & Monét X Change and watching the men on the catwalk. They need to hire new people because the production really does suck. They earned the D only because they showed the majority of the cast getting along, no other reason.
    I am so ready for BiP!!!

    I think production really failed this season. They hyped up Katie being sex-positive and did very little with it. The group of guys was so much fun and even their drama was harmless, but instead of focusing on the fun bromance, they just randomly villanized Hunter and Thomas more than necessary. They had everything there to create a good and satisfying romance narrative with Katie and Blake, but they decided to throw Greg (and Katie) under the bus and give us too little on Blake and Justin until it was too late to make it good. If they could give us good edits for Michael A, Andrew S, and even some of the random folk that no one cared about, they could have edited everything with Greg, Katie and Blake better. One person choosing between potential mates is always compelling if everyone is genuine, so the extra drama wasn't necessary and subjects everyone to unnecessary negativity outside of the show.

    My rating:
    The Lead (B-): Katie had her missteps and acted at times too contrived, but overall I think she did an OK job navigating the process, considering the pressure for her to do well after Matt James's season and the fact she wasn't even in the top 10 (not to mention many would prefer to go straight away to Michelle's season). Yes, she probably caved in a tad too much to her cast mob moves, but none of them turned out to be too hindering. She has also shown frankness and openess in her conversations with the men. Her After The Final Rose confront with Greg was overboard, but I could see where she was coming from. Her active social media output during the season was a good touch but could have been more concise.
    Production (C-): As Chris pointed out, much of this season looked too makeshift and copypasted from Clayshia's season. Much of the screentime was unnecessarily wasted on drama and could have been better used in light-hearted moments. Hunter's edit was unfair and Justin deserved more than being the resident meme. The best for me was Tayshia and Kaitlyn as hosts who, despite the obvious beginner bumps, did very well and easily debunked the myth that Chris Harrison was irreplaceable on this show.
    Cast (C): The "right reasons police" narrative was exhausting and dragged for way too long, and apparently things between the guys were far more amicable. Blake, Justin, Michael, Andrew S. and Connor B (and heck, even Mike) were bright spots, Aaron, Thomas, Karl, Cody and James were annoying but none of them truly aggravated me unlike other past contestants (Queen Victoria still irks me to this day). And if nothing else, Greg's narrative from instant frontrunner to his blowout was compelling.
    Romance (B-): Basically since Redacted/Cassie's season, it has been clear that production's loyalty lies with the drama much more than with the romance, and they will have no qualms of sacrificing romantic moments over the dramatic ones. Although at times, it seemed like the romance part was in the backburner, this season had its solid romantic spots, especially with Greg, Blake. Andrew and Michael (there should have been more with Justin). But unlike Chris, I'm fine with the way how the narrative of the love story between Katie and Blake was handled, it didn't felt that rushed to me and whereas Katie's chemistry with Greg always had that "too good to be true" tone to it, her chemistry with Blake always felt very palpable and endearing to me.
    Overall rate (C): Not an excellent season, but not a bad season by any means. I think this season will go down a bit like Desiree's season, which is a season that nobody dislikes but is hardly an iconic one.

    • @rolandbaum4877
      @rolandbaum4877 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      i agree with your grades with exeption of your cast's grade: I think too, the narrative was exhausting, but that's not the cast's fault, it's a production decision. Given, that many characters from this season have recognition value (Michael, Greg, Karl, Blake, ...), even if some of these were depicted as villains.
      So I personally think, the Cast's grade should be higher like a B or even a B+ for me.

  • @caitlinbishop6624
    @caitlinbishop6624 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    I definitely disagree with Katie’s rating. Enjoying a season is pretty subjective so the overall score is fine, but I honestly would give Katie like an A-, and then minus only comes from some of the social media stuff and the way she talked at AFR (which I honestly didn’t hate, just think it wasn’t a good look)
    I think her cutting guys who seemed suspicious right off the bat was refreshing. We still wasted so much time on stuff like Thomas Karl and Hunter even though they got sent home almost right away. If they had stayed, I can’t imagine what more we would’ve missed.
    I think she did a great job being open and vulnerable, relating to the men, and trying to put herself on their level. It’s why it honestly annoyed me that Greg said she was putting herself above him because she was the bachelorette, and I saw the complete opposite all season. I think she compartmentalized the relationships well & treated them all with respect.
    But the thing Katie did that won me over the most, was how she treated the men both on & especially after the show. She wished Hunter Michael and Greg a happy Father’s Day which was so sweet, especially knowing how her and Greg ended. She shared photos and stories that we didn’t see on the show, and shared whenever they did a podcast or anything to try and get people to listen and get to know them more. She did not say a single bad thing about any of the men except for Thomas and Greg. She genuinely cared about & still cares for every guy she met and that’s super admirable. I’ve never seen another lead do that.
    She made mistakes along the way, but she was a pleasure to watch & I think she’s a great human.

Even though she was influenced, she did an amazing job of weeding out the villains (I do wish she would have weeded out Aaron sooner). I actually had romance as my lowest score with a B+. I gave production a high score because they did a good job of not releasing telling footage that reveals who is in the final 2-4.

Her getting men to open up and be vulnerable throughout is a huge win. Katie was genuine and it set the tone in a big way. I'd give her an A.
    Cast had a lot of genuine men who paid attention to emotions and told us about themselves. They weren't the best looking group across the board by bachelor standards, but much higher quality cast than normal. This allowed good romance throughout.. until 3 men left Katie in a row. She ultimately came off bad because production did everything they could to have Greg come off looking like a good guy but he’s not. If it was any other guy, there would have been villain music playing behind his insane fight. But without the villain music, half of the viewers couldn’t tell that what he did was really bad. I think there was a lot more at the end and with Blake that we didn’t see that would have made her more likable.

    i've loved katie since matt's season and was soooo excited for her to be the bachelorette. katie was actually an amazing bachelorette; she made mistakes of course, but she was a lot more level headed and intentional than others leads. i think she had the potential to have the best season in a long time, but production completely screwed her over. they gave her bad promos which didn't help considering she was cut earlier on matt's season, which of course caused ratings to be lower. so to raise them they brought in the greg drama in the end which completely tainted her season. she was having amazing relationships with the men and genuine conversations but all of that has been forgotten because of the greg stuff. it makes me so angry because she didn't deserve it and she does not deserve all the hate she's getting. i wish everyone watched these videos so they would understand how produced the show is and how they gave her a sour edit in the end which is taking away from her whole story. i'm so glad her and blake are together; they're perfect for each other and i wish them nothing for the best. i hope she talks about it one day when her contract is up because i wanna know what went down with production for them to do this to her

    I feel like Katie has been the best bachelorette I have ever seen, and I feel like she deserved a better grade than a C. My grade is a B. Generally, compared to past bachelorettes, she had good instincts and made wise decisions. She was entertaining, unpredictable, tried to give every guy a fair shot, and was really good at compartmentalizing her feelings, which is really hard to do in this environment. She even ended up with a good guy, and I bet 5 years down the road, we will see her season as a success because they will still be together. I even stand by her in how she ended up treating Greg. She chased after him once to beg him to stay, and he still walked away a second time. She shouldn't have to keep chasing him. Good for her in laying into him like she did. As far as production, I see why they spin narratives the way they do. I do NOT agree with how they edit in statements that never happened(that's just plain wrong and disingenuous), buy I see why they try to make it suspenseful like will Blake propose or not, and I see why they need to have a villain every season. I also understand why they tend to include more drama than romance. If they didn't do that, people would say the bachelorette is boring and not enough there to keep their interest. Cause, ultimately, it's about ratings. Anyway, stepping off my soapbox now...

    My grades
    The lead: A-
    I really liked Katie. She filtered out the drama and was definitely very entertaining and down to earth
    The cast: B-
    Very average cast. Some good guys and some crappier guys. I really liked Michael A and there were definitely some villains (Karl)
    Production: B-
    It felt a bit off without Chris and with 2 hosts, but the production was pretty good throughout. There also felt that there wasn’t too much producer influence near the end
    Romance: A-
    The romance was good. Katie did end up engaged and seems extremely in love. Her and Blake also seem perfect

    I guess after the recent horrible bachelor seasons (Matt and Peter) and the choppiness of Clare/Tayshia's season, I felt like I really enjoyed this season. When it comes to love and trying to script a reality tv show, there's always going to be a weird disconnect. Sometimes I wish they wouldn't force storylines so much and let the people on the show just be themselves more. They seem to think that would tank ratings, but I don't think it would. Overall, I really liked Katie and maybe it's because I relate to her, but I'd give this season a solid B.

    People might disagree with me, but Katie was one of my fave bachelorettes. I loved that she said fuck you to the goodie two shoes perfect princess bachelorette trope. She was brutally honest, said exactly what she thought even when it was imperfect. She showed her anger, and I love her for it. But ofc women aren’t allowed to show their anger, they are expected to be amiable even when they’re getting treated like shit. Every-time a woman shows anger, she’s disliked. This is just fact. Katie said fuck you to that. Plus, her talking about her sexual assault on the bachelorette was ground breaking.

    To me, this was a bit harsh as this is the season that gave me faith again in the franchise. I had stopped watching after the Nick Viall saga, then watched Peter's season and lost faith in humanity. I thought Katie was a breath of fresh air, even if not perfect, still very relatable and fun and bold. The men were AMAZING, such support and love and bromance, they were awesome. Sure the repeated storyline of who's not here for the right reason got silly, but I'm also here for the drama.
    The only real fly in the ointment was the ending, as none of the three favorites was the final pick. But otherwise a great season.

    • @Julie-7605
      @Julie-7605 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeeeesssss....... She was relatable. Not to mention, the most modern women of the bunch. She wasn't trying to fit into the female archetype role. I enjoyed watching her ATFR fight with Greg because I have more masculine energy than feminine. I think this is a strength. But it can be off putting to see it in a woman.

    Well in the theme of control, I felt as though unlike other seasons, Katie as the Bachelorette was never in it. It wasn’t even her firm final decision at the end. Whether it was the drama with Thomas brought about by the other guys or the guys basically sending Karl home as well, or the fact that Michael A and Greg left, I felt that this season was never about Katie or how she felt. I felt as though a lot of her autonomy was really taken away from her, like how I felt Hannah Brown also had the season taken away from her.
    If anything I feel bad for Katie’s season blowing up for her sake.

    As a whole, I did not like this season, and I think its ALL in the ending. You were right about blake having no screen time. Not to say they arent in love, but solely based on what was shown, its really hard to believe that they are, not to mention all that greg stuff factoring in too. Also, katie was wayyy too reliant on what the other guys thought. who knows what wouldve happened had she given cody, hunter, or even thomas a 2nd chance. and the repeat dates... BORINGGGG. this is all sad too because I was really captivated and invested in this season until the last couple of episodes... so thats dissapointing. All in all, we needed more episodes, more focus on the actual relationship that survived, and for katie to rely a little less on what the guys of the house felt. A C is a PERFECT grade for this bleh season.

    I liked having Tayshia and Kaitlyn as mentors and hosts during the season. However, I think for MTA and ATFR (especially the latter) they need a non-biased 3rd party. Because they weren't just a host, they were Katie's friends, they can't interview people like Greg objectively. (and they just aren't great at the live show in general)

    • @emilyallen366
      @emilyallen366 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You might be onto something. Chris Harrison was great at the live stuff, but outside of the live stuff, he just felt like a robot there to ask the lead a list of questions when he was talking to them on the show. With Tayshia and Kaitlyn, it felt like some friends hanging out and chatting. Not sure how they'd bring in a non-biased party for the live stuff since even a former lead who has had no prior involvement with the season may come in with their biases.
