Metroid has the best water levels IMO. They're mostly there to hinder you and tell you "get your ass back!" or just very short parts that you can easily do within a few minutes. Because they expect you to get the Gravity suit before going to these areas or to explore them fully, so I think it's a great way to design a water level.

I've always considered Ice levels to be the absolute worst, even putting water to shame. The main issue with ice levels, and perhaps its an issue mostly because I already suck at any sort of platforming section in games, is that they love to make everything slippery....then add in a section that requires precision jumping while sliding all over the place *breaks controller just thinking about it*.
Naughty Dog didn’t let you down since they already stopped making Crash games by the time Wrath of Cortex came out. It was actually developed by Traveller's Tales, the same company that made all the Lego games.
Its not that bad now. Biggest problem with that was keeping track of where to go next, and since most replay it about 30 times they know it like the back of their hands now
ahh. That Atlantica level on Kingdom Hearts. I remember I couldn't navigate thru it properly so I just skipped it and ended up finishing the story mode of the game all the while forgetting about its existence. Yes, you can skip it.
You forgot to mention that in sonic 1 the level right before the final boss is a return to water labyrinth! Just when you thought it was all over it turns out that there is more water
Can confirm that playing Sonic on the GBA was....... lets call it an experience....... one that I would love to forget....... Great video as always. btw.
The Conker water level is a game design disaster. Just. Fucking. Awful. I was having quite a good time playing Conker, then this soul crushingly boring, dark, impossible to navigate area where everything looked the same came along and took that away from me.
rabbidluigi: This whole area is so cramped that it becomes such a maze to navigate, which means that you'll likely spend too long in here, and watch Conkers little face contorting as he runs out of oxygen. That's literally me when I spend to much time failing at a level lol! 😂😂😂
I'm surprised you didn't have Earthworm Jim's water level. A place where you have a very short air timer, in a delicate glass sub that will kill you in very few collision hits, while you have to not only squeeze through tight sections, but also find secret passages for oxygen reserves through walls that should hurt your ship. It's insane for a water level, and always found a way to make me throw my controller down in disgust.
mmMMM it feels good when a video about water levels doesnt diss the water temple from OoT. I swear that level gets way too much bad rep even though it's not that bad (or atleast the 3ds remake wasnt too bad)
I actually really like "Combination" in Conker's Bad Fur Day. As a kid, I'd swim back and forth through that level over and over again - literally no idea why. Also, the music in 'Labyrinth Zone' is badass, you can't deny that
Also I know it was just a simple mistake, but Wrath of Cortex was made by Traveler’s Tales, not Naughty Dog. The only Crash games Naughty Dog made were the OG trilogy and Crash Team Racing before moving on to Jak and Daxter. Which explains why the series’s quality afterwards was...inconsistent, to put it best.
You never read your comments do you? I and many others have told you multiple times that Naughty Dog no longer owns Crash Bandicoot, they lost the rights after Warped, so they didn't make Wrath of Cortex or any other that came after that. So they don't have a say on whether or not it gets remastered, that honor goes to Vicarious Visions who made the N'Sane Trilogy.
Absolutely hated that Conker water level when I played it. You can’t see anything while you are down there so every death never felt like my fault. Easily one of Rareware’s worst water levels

Never had an issue with Labyrinth in Sonic I. It was Scrap Brain zone 3, which was the same deal. That last jump right before Robotnik was always what got me. Not really any air bubblers nearby, and the jump almost seemed too high to make, especially with the lag time between control inputs and what Sonic did in the game. UGH. Lakebed is pretty neat, though I've yet to complete a Twilight Princess playthough without getting lost in there. Only bad dungeon in that game is Zant's palace. That one is just much too easy and short for the supposed final dungeon of the game
That said, #2 was pretty easy. Make sure that one turtle gets captured after defusing most of the bombs, and you’ll get a fresh timer with the bombs still defused, making it an easy sprint to the finish.

I would have to be so careful in the first level of the dam just so I could have all my turtles at full health just so I could use them all up nearly with that swimming level's brutality.
Water levels do have a tend of being bad. However I will say that many I don't mind as much. Most are beautiful to look at and the majority having amazing soundtracks. I do like quite a bit of them like Ancient Cistern, the dkc1 water levels, dire dire docks, aquatic park, etc.
Just to comment on RabidLuigi's ideas for top 5-10 topics. How about best Roguelikes? Best "Metroidvanias" ? Best 3D platformers? Best 2D platformers? There are hundreds of topics and even going back to ones already done, you started this channel years ago, many great games and terrible games could update old topics too.
the sound of Sonic drowning from Labyrinth Zone made me panic when I was kid Second only to the sound of running to a Pokemon Center with a poisoned Pokemon...
i hate Chemical Plant Zone more than Labyrinth Zone. it's like Labyrinth Zone, but it's placed where Labyrinth Zone was originally going to be placed. it has bottomless pits underwater, meaning that, if you miss a certain jump, you just have to watch Sonic slowly sink to the bottom of the screen. not to mention the above-water parts also being really challenging. and this was the Sonic 2 level they brought back for Mania?!
Zennec Fox If I was a bit meaner than I’d honestly just say git gud, since Chemical Plant has never really been that hard even in the OG Sonic 2. In fact it’s only the *second* level in both that game, Mania and even Generations.

i remember trying to do everything in KH2 and when I got to the Atlantica Ursula boss "fight", my disc wouldn't be read at the same section, leaving the game on the same screen with the bgm still playing. i had to borrow my friend's disc to get past this. not a fun time at all
I have a feeling something the Water Temple is going to be on this list so I want to offer an alternative take to say that the Water Temple is one of the best dungeons in the franchise and the closest 3D Zelda has gotten to the sheer quality of the 2D games dungeons. Most dungeons in 3D Zelda are like theme park rides, punching you over the head with pretty setpieces, easy puzzles and combat encounters while remaining extremely linear, for instance the Shadow Temple only has one branching path that you have to go on to progress on the main path. The Water Temple is different, exploring it was the puzzle and the idea to use a changeable water level to explore the dungeon was pretty ingenious since you have to have a good spacial map of the dungeon to make meaningful progress. I have similar praises for the Wind Temple, Great Bay Temple, and Lakebed Temple but I guess I just look for something different in Zelda Zelda dungeon design.
What do you think about Skyward Sword's water temple? The actual temple, not the flooded forest. I found the design to be tricky when I played it, but maybe I was just too young to figure ig out quickly. I actually enjoyed most of the temples in that game, as there were quite a few unique mechanics to keep the puzzles interesting.
Um, Will, why did you single out NaughtyDog during the Coral Canyon segment? Travelers Tales made *Wrath of Cortex* and the series itself is currently in the hands of Vicarious Visions and Beenox.
What's the music that plays between the entries from? I'm tearing my hair out over here because it's so familiar but I can't place it lol Great video btw! I'll second one of the other comments I read on a Top 5 Metroidvanias video

I hear ya, RL, I'm in the middle of an unscheduled "vacation" too, and I'm BORED.
How about a counterpart of "best water/fire/stealth/driving/etc levels"
alternatively, "series that learned from past mistakes" for said level styles?
I really like the new thumbnails. Fits much better in my opinion
Top 5 jump scares in video games that will leave you needing toilet paper.
there also great water levels
like the Iron Whale from Shovel Knight
the sound of Sonic drowning from Labyrinth Zone made me panic when I was kid
Second only to the sound of running to a Pokemon Center with a poisoned Pokemon...
i hate Chemical Plant Zone more than Labyrinth Zone. it's like Labyrinth Zone, but it's placed where Labyrinth Zone was originally going to be placed. it has bottomless pits underwater, meaning that, if you miss a certain jump, you just have to watch Sonic slowly sink to the bottom of the screen. not to mention the above-water parts also being really challenging.
and this was the Sonic 2 level they brought back for Mania?!
Zennec Fox If I was a bit meaner than I’d honestly just say git gud, since Chemical Plant has never really been that hard even in the OG Sonic 2. In fact it’s only the *second* level in both that game, Mania and even Generations.
I'm surprised you haven't done a Top Five Rhythm Games yet. Let's bring back some music to the channel!

*"I Guess It's Just A Bit Of A Tide Cliche To Complain About Water Levels."*
*"There's So Much Material To Wade Through."*
*"You Can't Just Drown A Regular Level And Expect It To Work Just As Well."*
I never had much trouble with KH1's Atlantica. It was a bit time-consuming, but that was my only complaint.
I remember in Lego Dimensions, Sonic is revealed to have PTSD related to Labyrinth Zone. Hilarious
the water part in metal gear solid 2 is literally the reason i have never been able to beat mgs 2
I personally enjoyed the Atlantica world in KH1 versus the KH2 version of that world. Really wish we could have revisited Atlantic's or Neverland.
"Play Labyrinth Zone on the GBA"
Did that years ago...HORRID EXPERIENCE
Rockman & Forte got a GBA port as well...while it also had screen crunch...it was MUCH BETTER
i remember trying to do everything in KH2 and when I got to the Atlantica Ursula boss "fight", my disc wouldn't be read at the same section, leaving the game on the same screen with the bgm still playing. i had to borrow my friend's disc to get past this.
not a fun time at all
I have a feeling something the Water Temple is going to be on this list so I want to offer an alternative take to say that the Water Temple is one of the best dungeons in the franchise and the closest 3D Zelda has gotten to the sheer quality of the 2D games dungeons.
D
Honorable mentions: Water Temple from OoT and Poisonous Pipeline from DKC 3.
Down where it's worse
Down where it's wetter
Please, what's the name of the song for the "Number X" interludes? It sounds so peaceful.....
Now that you've brought up Wrath of Cortex not being re-mastered, it's gonna get re-mastered. XD
Um, Will, why did you single out NaughtyDog during the Coral Canyon segment?
Travelers Tales made *Wrath of Cortex* and the series itself is currently in the hands of Vicarious Visions and Beenox.
What's the music that plays between the entries from? I'm tearing my hair out over here because it's so familiar but I can't place it lol
Great video btw! I'll second one of the other comments I read on a Top 5 Metroidvanias video
Aquas from Star Fox 64 3D. Both it and the Metal Gear Solid level shown are considered honorable mentions.
@@matthewmagnani2915 Thank you!
@IndigoSaint No problem.
@@matthewmagnani2915 Don't you mean dishonorable mention?
@@sonicstar917 It depends on the video in question.
A bit surprised you didn't bring up Dimitri's diving sections from Sly 3: Honor Among Thieves.
