Lye is a natural product derived from wood ash. However a properly made bar of soap has no lye in it. It’s used as a catalyst for the chemical reaction that creates saponification.
I’ve been making soap for over 10 years. I disagree with not using distilled water. Water varies in different areas. Distilled water is consistent no matter where you purchase it. Tap water varies in minerals and additives depending on where you live. Just use distilled water, it’s cheap and you will never have any issues with your soap.
Hi, I tried to follow very carefully all the instructions for this your recipe, and when I used an immersion blender, to mix the oils and the lye solution it began to foam. Any ideas as to why this happened? I'm disappointed. :( I want try it again, once I know what went wrong.
It sounds like you may have inadvertently allowed air bubbles into the mixture. You should “burp” the blender after you lower it into the mixture. Let the air escape fist. Also did you wait for the lye solution and oils to cool sufficiently? Try soaping at a cooler temp next time. Maybe 90-95 degrees…
Thank you! I buy coconut oil wherever I can get it cheaply. It doesn’t even need to be the best quality for so baking. The one I used in the video I bought at Costco. But that’s not the least expensive option, it’s what I could get quickly at the time. Usually I’ll order mine online in a 5 gallon bucket! And it lasts for years.

I have good water so it’s never been an issue, but you’re right, it’s more predictable with distilled water. 🙂
