Hi Kaelyn, would you be up for making a video all about how you read articles/books effectively and how you take your notes? I have just started my Masters at History and I am realizing I have to take a much a more disciplined approach to doing seminar readings if I ever want to get anything done on time!

I really like the question that you came up with for your documentary course. It is something I have actually been exploring since I was undergrad as a film studies and cultural anthro major. When creating short films, marketing campaigns, and social media content, I always try to have my subjects guide the story. They choose what and how they are going to say something. I might help guide their words in order to make sure they feel they are being heard and seen correctly. I also usually allow them into the editing process as well for the same reason. It is a bit unconventional, however I love that it and will be exploring it more in a masters program!!!
I love that! I hope I can incorporate a similar method in my doc project!

I had a prof in grad school (English lit) who would start each seminar by going around the room having everyone give an initial impression of the text we were looking at that week. While that would have irked me sooo much in undergrad (to the point that I probably would have dropped the course, LOL), I knew that in-class engagement was an inevitable and significant part of the grad seminar experience. It was soooo much easier to talk in that class given this mandatory moment of non-judgemental engagement. It was even fine to just say I didn't like this text, I didn't get it, it was challenging, etc. I'd had undergrad classes with the same professor and didn't speak a word the whole term outside of one presentation (and I was not alone in this). As a prof who DID want conversation going, he must have picked up on this little trick somewhere along the way ;)
I personally benefit from the cold call methods because it forces me to get out of my head. I'm glad it worked well for you also
