Excellent optimistic points from Richardson. I really hope her vision of a NEW American dream that includes way more of us than ever before is headed toward consensus and, thus, creation.
An uber-pithy implication of HCR's views..."democracy is not a spectator sport!" That's a burden for most busy layfolk, who've left such "work" for somebody else to do. The Rule of the Rut: When you're in one, does a sense of direction apply? Democracy gets harder as demographics expand and diversify. HCR has an awesomely sophisticated idealism moderated by her extensive experience with historical reality. How do the rest of us get to such grasp without trying? We don't if we just leave it to someone else!
What's wrong with a man having faith in his God, his Country and Himself? Would it be better for a man to put all his faith in the government to take care of him? I prefer not, thanks.
Thank you, this is articulating some of my thinking I have not been able to do myself. There is work to be done by us and hope in the process. We are all apart of creating a new country to include us all.
Part 1 - I hope by “man” you mean person. Part 2 - we are the government. We can direct ourselves to take care of all of us so we all have equal opportunity. That would include opportunity for women and people of color who have suffered the most under racism and sexism, which came from our history.
Jerry if that’s your takeaway then I’d suggest you weren’t listening, because it’s not at all what the professor said. The point was inclusion, and working together to secure that inclusion. Rather than focusing on our individual selves in the image of outdated tropes of what society should look like we should strive to embrace everyone in the equation. Politicians have always played upon emotions to both earn and suppress votes. In the past few years it’s become particularly toxic, as well as transparent. We’re at a unique time. Enough people are finally paying attention that we’re afforded a choice to turn from divisive rhetoric and to rebuild.

We can only choose if everyone can vote equally.
