Big one-volume books look great on the shelf. For instance I have a very impressive book with all the Sherlock Holmes stories. But sitting comfortably with that huge volume while reading it, is just not possible. Also, as I've experienced with other big books (like Webster's Encyclopedic Unabridged Dictionary Of The English Language), big books tend to get damaged more easily than small books. So I'm all for splitting big books into several volumes.
