  • We stopped by Cold Spring NY because ‪@Travelingmel‬ had a gig in town. What a charming little Hudson Valley location. I can only imagine how crowded it gets on the weekend. It's about an hour from Grand Central Station in the City by train. A bit more by car if there's traffic. We start at the top of the Hill and make our way down to the river. Enjoy the summer time sights and sounds.

Yes... one of the most humid, rainy & smoky summers in Vermont and the Northeast that I can remember. Lovely walk. Cold Spring is a day trip for me and I enjoyed seeing parts of it I hadn't seen before. Thank you!

Hi Judy, thanks so much. We just got a weird few hours of smoke yesterday and it hits 97 here today but mostly it’s been a nice summer out here. That said, I haven’t spent much time in the North East so this was a fun little visit. Hope to get back sometime. -H

Hey there, so glad you enjoyed it. It really is a charming little place. I had never heard of it before our trip either. I’m sure there are hundreds of these little towns all through the north east. Very cool to see the views up and down the Hudson as well. - H.

A great video, Henry! I was born in Cold Spring at the Julia L. Butterfield Hospital that no longer exists. It was a half mile behind you at the beginning of the video on the left (east) side of Chestnut Street (Route NY 9D). My brothers and I attended St. Mary's Episcopal Church for many years. I was an Alter Boy there. There is also a scene in the movie "Hello, Dolly" at the beginning of the movie that was filmed on this lawn with the church in the background. I watched Gene Kelly direct the scene and while trying to get a better look at what was going on, I bumped into a woman. I would see this woman months later on the cover of Life Magazine; she was Barbra Streisand. I said "Excuse me". She said "That's quite all right". I didn't know who she was at the time. I was only 11.
01:36 - You mentioned the historical marker. Abraham Lincoln visited Cold Spring twice. The first time, he visited the house behind the historical marker. The second time was when his remains were aboard a train that stopped in Cold Spring in 1865. My father owned an "Esso" Service Station from 1968 to 1972 about 300 yards behind you on the same side of the street. It is now a Gulf gas station and mini-mart/Duncan Donuts.
01:57 - I lived three quarters of a mile up Main Street to your right in the neighboring village of Nelsonville.
02:07 - This is where the movie equipment was staged and where Gene Kelly stood directing the scene. My encounter with Ms. Streisand occurred right behind the Veterans Monument to the left.
02:15 - A dirt road was plowed, left to right down the slope of this lawn for "Hello, Dolly". A horse pull wagon filled with people in colorful costumes rode down the road singing the first song.
06:00 - the field across the street was our Little League field.
10:57 - The Cold Spring Fire House here was once a Texaco Service Station.
11:23 - The Old Homestead Club was the building I took my first accordion lessons in.
11:32 - The store "Currents" was once a stationary store where I used to by comic books.
12:20 - Cold Spring Pizza has been a pizza place for decades, under different names. It was once a soda fountain called "Busy Corner" featuring Borden ice cream.
12:25 - The yellow building across Garden Street was once Cold Spring Hardware. A son of the former owner is now the sheriff of Putnam County - in which Cold Spring is located. The family also owned Cold Spring Lumber Co. which I'll point out later by the river.
13:12 - The building across Main Street here where you see the sign "STORE", actually says "Palen's Drug Store". This sign was covered-up for many years until a few years ago. Palen's was one of two drug stores in Cold Spring. It was a "Rexall" store and the door to the right of the drug store was the entrance to its soda fountain featuring Bryer's ice cream. The drug and soda stores were connected inside. The fountain and counter and stools were relocated to The Depot restaurant by the tracks. Now I understand they are in the ice cream store at the top of Railroad Ave., by the tracks.
Inside the grey building in the center was a general and clothing store named "Click's". Like Palen's both sections of the store were connected inside.
13:59 - The Village of Cold Spring building was once the Cold Spring Fire House.
14:25 - Where the awesome ivy is growing, is the former "Fishkill National Bank - Cold Spring Branch".
14:33 - The green awninged building to the right was once the Cold Spring Post Office.
16:31 - Lunn Terrace: Up the road to the left is a rocky cliff. It was atop this cliff that the singer/artist Don McLean posed for the picture of his third album: "Don McLean". Don lived back in the woods atop the cliff where he wrote "American Pie" among other songs. Don and folk singer Pete Seeger would preform with others at the Bandstand by the river a couple of days each summer. Pete Seeger lived six miles further north in Fishkill, off of NY 9D. They belonged to the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater group.
16:53 - The Depot. This was once the northbound train station for the New York Central Railroad. Later it became a Sinclair Service Station and Willie's Jeep Dealership. This included the entire depot building and the white building at the top of the hill (center). The white building is now an ice cream parlor where the Palen's soda fountain, counter and stools were reported being. Right behind The Depot is the creek that legend has it, General George Washington drank from and commented onhow cold the spring was - hence - Cold Spring. Bill and Hillary Clinton frequent The Depot.
17:15 - While growing up here, this beautiful diorama did not exist. It was just a waist high cinderblock wall painted with black and white diagonal stripes with a small sign that read: " Dead End". Decades ago, Main Street continued over the tracks to its western segment on the other side. You used to be able to walk across the tracks instead of going through the "Subway" underneath them. The subway was used as a "public" urinal quite often.
18:58 - Fish Street is the street to the right. You are looking down the western segment of Main Street.
19:10 - Almost ALL of these buildings were domiciles. The only businesses here when I lived here in the 50's - '70's were the Cold Spring on the end of the street to the left and the Hudson View Inn on the right.
20:24 - The Hudson House River Inn was once he Hudson View Inn.
22:30 - The structure is affectionally called by the "Springers" - "The Bandstand". Growing up, Pete Seeger, Don McLean and other would play here a couple of Saturday's a summer.
22:54 - This replication was built by a local blacksmith located a block from my former house in neighboring Nelsonville. His daughter and I were classmates in school.
23:00 - The Hudson River Fjord - There are only two fjords in the United States: The portion of the Hudson River and one in Washington state. The mountain if the left is called "The Crow's Nest". The mountain on the right is "Storm King Mountain". It the smoke wasn't so thick, you could see the City of Newburgh.
24:25 - These houses occupy the former Cold Spring Lumber Co.
29:00 - You mentioned that July 4th. was just days away from when you recorded this video. Before they moved and improved the Cold Spring train station, this was a dirt lot. On the evenings of Independence Day, villagers would gather here to watch the dynamic fireworks display conducted by the United States Military Academy (West Point) across the river. There was once a railroad siding here. During the making of "Hello, Dolly", the train used in the movie was parked here. My younger brothers and I got to climb all over the engine in 1968.
32:05 - Some of the Native Americans who lived along its shores call the Hudson River "Mahicanituck," or "the river that flows both ways." It is tidal as far as Albany and it actually can flow in both directions as the tides come in and out.
32:19 - Gouverneur Kemble Warren - the man who started the West Point Foundry had a home back in the woods you see here. You could once see the mansion from this point. I mentioned Don McLean lived in these woods. His home was called "The Gate House". It once belonged to the Warren estate.
The area in the latter part of your video is new to me. The pathways and stairs are new since i lived there.
I didn't mean to clutter up your comments section, but I thought I'd explain a few things for historical reasons.
    Misc notes:
    1. The actor Richard Chamberlain once lived in Cold Spring.
    2. General George Washington and his men camped on the hillside where the local public school is located. Haldane Central School.
    3. About seven miles downriver (Manitou, NY) is where General Benidict Arnold made his infamous escape to the British Navy in Croton-On-The-Hudson, NY.
    4. Four miles north of Cold Spring is Breakneck Mountain (and tunnel). Breakneck Mountain was the main source of the rock used to make the Brooklyn Bridge.
    5. Julia L. Butterfield, wife of General Butterfield of the Butterfield Stagecoach family lived in Cold Spring in a house called "Cragside". It sits on the corner of Morris Ave. (Route NY 9D north of the traffic light) and Craigside Drive. Yes, CRAGside became CRAIGside. Haldane School's address is on Craigside Drive. She left money for a library and a hospital to be built. The library (Julia L. Butterfield Library) is still there. The hospital alas has been raised.
Henry, you did my birthplace proud! Thank you for a wonderful and amazing video!
    6. Legend has it that some of Captain Kidd's pirate's treasure was buried in the Cold Spring/Nelsonville area or across the river on the mountain "Crow's Nest".

It shows how very proud you are of your birth place, for many years I lived in Beacon, and visited friends in Cold Springs, had many stays at the Hospital, it was a shame when it closed after Dr. Giampi retired and passed away.

Hello Henry. I love these small New England towns. I was in Granville, NY last Saturday. I was on my way to Manchester, Vt in southwestern Vermont, and Google routed me through part of bordering New York. Granville is nice, but you can certainly tell the tourist dollars end up across the border in Vermont. I've never been to Cold Spring, but I cross into New York frequently to visit the opposite side of Lake Champlain. I think you'd fit right into a Vermont small town like Montpelier or Middlebury. Thanks for the walk and take care.

Watching this video tells me there has been quite a lot of improvement made in the town, let me ask have the Town Records been moved from where they used to be or not, if not, should that place gets on fire, there wouldn't be any records left to be found.

Very enjoyable to watch and well narrated. Felt like I was right there with you. I am new to vlogging, but heard if you wear a wireless lavalier microphone while filming, it will negate the sound of passing cars, big trucks, etc. and produce better audio from a narration standpoint. At least that is what I'm going to try. Rode and DJI are brands of mics I would recommend. Happy trails!

    • @CityWalks
      @CityWalks  ปีที่แล้ว

I think It kind of depends on the mic and software. For this I used the DJI wireless system and I think it turned out well. Sound is harder to get right sometimes than the video. Thanks for watching and commenting. All the best. -H
