Before I ever got my copy of this UHQR, there were dozens of reviews, opinions on Forums and downright disappointment in the Vinyl Community like I've not seen in recent times.
Since this isn't baseball, is "hitting it out of the park" the intended goal? And exactly WHAT does that mean?
This UHQR defies the norms in many ways. Expectations are crushed for some, but is there more to this release than meets the ears?

Three points of clarification:
1) Analogue Productions is located in Salina, Kansas not Saline as I mispronounced in the video.
2) On Steely Dan Greatest Hits, the RL isn’t always written into each of the 4 sides, but the MASTERDISK stamp is and that’s a Robert Ludwig (RL) cut.
3) Some reviews have said the vocals are pushed back to the point where they’re suppressed. While I agree the instrumentation on the UHQR is more predominant, the vocals are still clear and sufficient to my ears on my system.
David, this was a fantastic review...love your tie in of the name of the title, the many sounds of the many pressings, and how your perspective was changed on what sounded / felt best.
While I am not a collector of this artist, I really enjoyed your nuanced take on this and so many others! Excellent channel...tribute to the VC! ❤

Interesting and thorough review! I just got my UHQR version yesterday and haven't had a chance to listened to it yet. I love the album musically, but I'm hoping that I'll like the sound of the UHQR after paying $150 for it.
That was really good new to the channel. You gave some good balance and perspective on the subject. One of the points with Analogue Productions is the high standards we expect which allows us to trust there judgement and in turn have us welcomely open our wallet for a superior product. It’s a fine line in the VC as Mobile Fidelity experienced. Thank You
This UHQR sounds fantastic. Vocals and music are very clear and the highs are well controlled. Superb mastering and pressing.
Highs “well controlled”. That’s the point! Can you imagine the horns on Parker’s Band being brighter than on the UHQR? They are perfectly attenuated and yet just crisp enough, especially that solo!
What kind of audiophile wants a castrated $150 record?

My copy will arrive in the next few days & I have ordered all the SD ones as for me they are the greatest. My issue is that I can’t play 45s but will be able to in Oct with the arrival of my new TT. So I was getting concerned with the reviews but your insightful review has put my mind to rest. And as you say it is all about the music. Thanks again. @@SafeAndSoundTXAudioExcursion David, I have been in this wonderful hobby for decades since I was 13 when a friend played some discs for me on a Sanyo three-in-one with the LP hanging way over the minuscule platter as I got very excited with the music he was playing & the fidelity which was better than radio quality. I never was satisfied with the performance of my components & it has been a never ending quest through upgrades until the last few years when I can say I am happy with my equipment & room. The quest has been to get great music excellently recorded & to have that wonderfully reproduced to provide an outstanding listening to music experience in my room. So I have broken the bank & will be getting my final TT which is an Acoustical Systems APOLYT. The cartridge will be an Acoustical Systems Palladian XO Boron.
I received mine this week, but due to work, I have not had a chance to listen to it. If I am going to play this baby, I want to sit down, and enjoy it. Hopefully this weekend I get a chance to do that. Thank you for taking the time to do this review.

On a different topic, if you're looking for an interesting series, have you heard any of those Atlantic 75th Anniversary LPs that Rhino have released? I picked up a couple of the LPs that Kevin Grey mastered and I've been pretty impressed. Not sure if you'd consider these audiophile LPs, but they are certainly in the same league as the BN Classic Series. I would even compare "Fragile" with the Steve Wilson remix. Oh yeah.... they're only a bit over $20. The series has a broad array of artists and titles, so I'm certain there's something for everyone. The Citizen CD set is a favorite also but I didn’t want to muddy the waters.
I tried the new UMe. I will be sending it back. No fill on side one track five. Other than that it sounded ok. At least the vinyl was quiet as opposed to my OG black label ABC. I found a UK pressing in my collection that sounded very nice. Quiet vinyl and very good dynamics for my taste. That will be my 'go to' on vinyl. I own the redbook and sacd too.
Wow, _thanks_ for some sane clarification on this. I received my copy last week and it had been sitting in the bin waiting for me to buy some distilled water for ultrasonic cleaning. Then a friend told me this was the worst thing ever, dead and lifeless. I haven't even opened it yet, wondering what to do! I always thought the OG album was a bit lean, and really have only listened to the digital version for the past 20 some odd years which I think sounds better. Until the UHQR's I've been leaning on the Greatest Hits. Anyway, after being blown away by CBAT and pleased with Countdown I was wondering a course of action if feedback was universally bad. Your explanation makes total sense as to my friend's feedback. I guess I'll just relax and enjoy it!
It's not the worst thing ever, they could have added a little more on the top end but it is there you just gotta work at it to hear it, I think you'll enjoy it because the og is too bright this does the complete opposite.

I imagine so! Between our hearing and system differences these are variances in the outcome that can happen. When it isn’t a slam dunk it’s harder to decide. One reviewer really thought the vocals were almost lost. To me their very present in spite of the instrumentation being a bit louder in the UHQR…the ear of the beholder.

With my old ears accentuated high-end is important to me. I gotta hear that treble. I would think that the majority of the buyers are possibly in my 60+ age group as we were around when this album was first released, and many of us suffer from higher frequency hearing loss. When they re-master these records, they should take that into consideration. The higher frequencies don't need to be accentuated so they sound like a cheap transistor radio, but accentuated enough that those higher frequencies can be heard above our tinnitus.
The most irritating sound for me is when that person pulls up next to you waiting for a stoplight and not only can you feel the bass sound but all you can hear is the "boom-boom, chicka-chicka". Argh!
Amen on those boomy car stereos, they are killing their hearing in an enclosed vehicle and loosening the bolts!
I got the new, standard release. I pre ordered Aja, but didn't think I wanted to spend $150 on Pretzel Logic.
The Geffen pressing sounded about what I expected after just listening to this on CD for years.
I like Katy Lied, and probably will do the UHQR, but a little nervous since they don't have the original master for it to work off of.
Will also get the Gaucho UHQR as I love the sound of it.
This album never did have a lot of high-end presence. To my ears this affected mainly the sound of the drum kit - somewhat cloaked, even muffled. The acoustic guitars in particular, on the other hand sounded great. I have a mint Japanese pressing on the pink Probe label, and it sounds fine. I was lukewarm on Pretzel Logic when it came out in '74, but I've grown to love it more over the years.
My original has a lot of top end presence, but not too bright, and overall is an open, fresh listening experience.
Thanks for the thoughtful review, especially concerning our expectations around "audiophile" reissues. Almost always, my first exposure to an album is through a regular pressing and I look to audiophile reissues to be quieter, cleaner, more articulate than the original. In the case of Pretzel logic though, I've never owned a copy and don't have any expectations about how the album sounds. Pretzel Logic will give me the opportunity to listen in reverse, first to the UHQR and then a regular pressing. The "What happened?" question for me may be about the original release, not the UHQR.

Hi friend. Do you plan to review Aja UHQR? I went looking for the measured and honest review I've come to know recently on this album in advance of the copy I received today, but no luck. With a 3 year old, a teenager, and an overall tight schedule, I couldn't get around to hearing all of it this evening, but side A... Wow. So far, I am impressed on the same level as CBAT. The only difference is that this album was so close to perfect to begin with that it may not wow in the same way as CBAT. I can say for certain, so far, that Black Cow and Aja both are incredible. I was blown away with the balancing act on the drum segment closing out Aja. Absolutely superb on my setup. Woah! You'll see what I mean if you haven't closed out side A yet...
Personal opinion, but this is the best version of those songs I've heard. To be fair, I was very forgiving of PL for reasonable points, but this AJA press is more towards what I'd hoped for than how PL turned out. Hoping the rest of the album goes well, though I'm confident.
Now, that tricky Katy Lied next year will be a real test and hopefully treat!

IIRC, Walter Becker and/or Roger Nichols mixed PL on electrostatic speakers, which was a newish technology at the time. Early electrostats had a natural roll-off on the top end, which may have been compensated for during mixing and mastering, but may sound harsh on normal tweeters. I drive a pair of early 80"s Acoustats so I'm pretty familiar with the sound. Also had a copy of o.p. and quad versions of PL, and also preferred the folded down stereo of the quad (alas no proper decoding) to the o.p.

Thanks for that insight on the electrostatic speakers! That could account for some of the perceived harshness on non-electrostatic speakers.
Electrostatic speakers have been around since the 1930's...

Great shoot out and analysis. Not having the deep and broad history with the album like yourself, I came at it from a different perspective. Bottom line is I love all 3 of the UHQRs released so far. Do you think Katy Lied will be skipped? I have heard discussion there may be some tape issues? Thanks
There are issues from the start with using a new DBX system that caused issues. The UHQR will come out and they’ll do the best they can :) I think they’re contractually obligated to release it as part of the series agreement.
Those Polk Audio speakers you have are really good. I have a pair of Alison AL130U speakers from 1990- with 2 8" woofers, 3" mid and a Meral tweeter which is an upgrade. That was a very thorough review of Pretzel Logic David. It seems youhave more versions of that album than anyone I have seen review those UHQR45's. That's an interesting point that Chad went with what sounded better to him, a rolled of high freq range on this record. Robert Ludwig did a great job on the The greatest hits 2 LP set as you know. No compression, full range, open soundstage, detailed. I have a Black US OG pressing and colour vinyl issue. Anyway, my OG Steely Dan records sound great. The next issue of ABC Records with the rainbow label sounded better than the dark OG ABC label first issue depending on the title. This is the case with my copy of Countdown To Ecstasy. Ludwig's mastering of the DBX infected Katy Lied tracks for The Greatest Hits is an improvement over the OG

Thanks for another great video. I just wish you had done he chart comparison you did for the CROSBY, STILLS & NASH album because that was a very useful chart. Hope the Quad versions of all STEELY DAN albums get reissued at some point.
I appreciate your mentioning that chart. The reason for it was the distinct variances between songs which was unusual. Typically, the characterizations of the differences are universal across the tracks. But a general rating chart comparing the presses is a worthy addition and I will start to include them more regularly. Thanks for refreshing that thought!

You, Steve in Canada and the persons who join your groups are among the few I pay any attention to in music matters, quality, master tape conditions, history, music impressions. Note you once again came up with ideas and an angle no one else did on the PRETZEL LOGIC box. Chad is doing his best to stick to the mission of his company and their name, because he loves and cares about this. Unfortunately for music, there is no Martin Scorsese advocating music master preservation and restoration as he does for film, but you and your group are the closet thing, so please keep at it!

So, Josh Norrid posted the waveform..
The UHQR vs White label promo, and the waveform clearly shows the top end of the UHQR was totally sheared off.
So, my ears thought I heard it that way.
The waveform confirms it.
I don't think I'm going to ask myself... "what's the definition of good".
I've been listening to music my whole life.
I'm a fan of AP, but I'm not a fan of this mastering decision.
I'll also add, that this is the first AP lp I've experienced where I just totally disagree with what is being presented.
I'm glad this wasn't my first UHQR, because I would never buy another one.
All of my other AP stuff is great.
I'm kinda concerned now, though, and might wait for Aja UHQR reviews before purchasing.
If something has changed, and I'm just not able to hear or agree on what "good" is anymore, then I should save my money, and just enjoy what I have collected so far.

All of the Steely Dan reissues by Universal at 33-1-3RPM are cut to vinyl from a Hi-Res digital master file provided by Bernie Grundman.

Are you in the US? If so, since the price is the same look for a free shipping option. While Acoustic Sounds says Free Shipping for in stock items over $99, the UHQR is considered special packaging and doesn’t actually get free shipping. Look at Plaid Room Records, The In Groove of Elusive Disc.
Good video David! I need to go surfing discogs for that Greatest Hits. Being in Canada, the UHQR's are a bit too steep of a cost to grab them. I have the AA-1006 first press of Aja so I won't be getting the next UHQR either from Steely Dan/AP. Cheers
The AB 1006 is the first pressing, and the best. You might have an AA with the B scratched out, this is also an AB 1006.
They increased the price and changed the stampers, but still had AB's they just relabled as AA.
I have an pristine AB 1006 and the sound is incredible.
That said, I still pre ordered the UHQR, I just got to see how it sounds!

@@pnichols6500 - Would say you can hear Jim Keltner’s off beat hi-hats on “Josie” in the intro and first verse very well on yours? On mine it’s almost impossible until the second verse. Also hard to hear Jim’s trash can thing in the middle eight.
@@UFO_computers Finally got a chance to give it a listen, yes definitely, can hear the high hats coming in at the beginning and staying with them when you zero in.
I just got a new $3k phono preamp and it makes quite a bit of difference, may not have been able to isolate them with my previous preamp.
But my copy is excellent except Deacon Blues, the sound quality remains but that track doesn't jump off the vinyl like the others.
I'm guessing someone play it over and over? But no pops or clicks that would make that more evident.
If Deacon Blues was equal, I'd pass on the UHQR probably.

For the money, the Universals are good enough, though I will spring for the AP Aja and Gaucho.some of us actually have a budget. That said, I agree about GH version.

I have the MASTERDISK stamped and some sides have a handwritten RL. Pressed at Specialty records.

I never understood the reasoning behind quadraphonic recordings! What were they going for? Listening as if you’re in the band? Obviously stereo is the only thing that makes sense if you’re trying to re-create a live performance! There is a point of origin on stage that fires into the audience!
It sounds like to me you’re saying this is a very flat recording that doesn’t have much dynamic range! I mean I have a DBX 3BX so that I use for expansion purposes on many of the 70s OG’s to give them some life! But I don’t wanna pay $150 for something that doesn’t knock my socks off ! Katy lied, has that somewhat flat feel to me! I have Asa on pre-order and am expecting to be blown away! Nice comparison video David! Your winnings from my contest have been sent🎉
Very interested if you can provide any starter/guideline settings for Dbx and classic vinyl. Acquiring a box (my roommate in late 70’s had one and played Steely Dan repeatedly). Never heard it sound the same since! Thank you!
@@bruceevans3746 hey Bruce! I don’t know which DBS unit you have, but there are two main controls on it! One is expansion, and the other is transition level! You don’t have to push all of those up as far as you can! It’s not like a volume control! But what it does is, it will make your music a little more snappy and punchy! My DBX 3BX has an array of 3 horizontally running LEDs and outside of my ears I try to have the LEDs running or bouncing from yellow into red LEDs! I hope this helps! It is the best tool I’ve found to make those older,less dynamic range recordings, palatable! I run my DBX almost constantly through almost any recording, and it enhances the sound! However, I do run that very very lightly on most of my stuff and basically pull the transition and expansion all the way back down to nothing when I’m playing CDs! I hope this helps! I talk about DBX on my channel. If you want to take a look at some of the stuff I’ve talked about on there.
As an update…quad was a precursor to the idea of immersive sound but the format wars killed it (until the movie industry woke it back up), but you’re right in that sound comes at you unless your sitting in the middle of the band or orchestra.
And in a very different and unexpected kind of way, the UHQR of Pretzel Logic has blown me away in a very different way by taking the original and giving it a new smooth feel that is nudging me to listen to it again and again even after spending days with it last week. I’m thinking that says something…

Hi David, I enjoy watching your videos and I agree with most of your other Steely Dan reissue analysis, but on this UHQR Pretzel Logic pressing I disagree. I compared the UHQR to my original ABC (ABCD 808) Black Label - Santa Maria Pressing last night with my wife and we both agreed the OG pressing sounded better. The original pressing had a more open/wider soundstage, balanced highs, mids, and bass, with a distinct presence . I didn't hear what you described as "crisp and bright" on the OG pressing. For $150.00/plus tax & shipping, this reissue is definitely not worth the high price tag, in my opinion. Michael Fremer's review was spot on.
I fully understand your perspective in the usual perspective of what “sounds” better. Having a Santa Maria OG is an advantage as they were about the best label based mass production plant. Mine was not from there.
That’s a good method having your wife listen. Sometimes I get in my head too much analyzing everything. My wife not concerned with soundstage terms will give a basic I like the first or second one better Lol

I solved my dilemma about buying Uhqr versions of these records.
I simply buy mint 3rd pressings of each Steely Dan lp. Then I A/B them to the original pressings now rendering them to be the equivalent of a UHQR.
Saves me about $1000 in the end.😊

You only need the RL on two or more sides - check out and compare Robert’s handwriting on the matrix numbers
I assume you mean he didn’t always initial each lacquer, but his etch-writing gives away it is his work even if the RL is missing? Guess I haven’t tested that aspect!

Well, what a disappointment. I did my A/B with the original & the new UHQR Pretzel Logic. Lets just say the UHQR has been neutered, not good. My system - McIntosh MC2102 tube amp, McIntosh C2300 tube pre-amp, McIntosh MT10 turntable, Clearaudio Concerto V2 MC cart, Sonos Faber Amati G5 speakers.
Absolutely the top end was suppressed to create a "smoother" outcome per Chad's admission to me. So the Wow! factor isn't like it normally is on a release. I have zero doubt the decision was made because the top end was too harsh or generated to much sibilance on the UHQR at 45RPM. Chad wouldn't make this decision just for the hell of it. My clue on that is he told me "you certainly don't want this any brighter". To my ears, on my system, I hear the same thing but have gotten to enjoy this cut more and more as the original always was on the edge of too bright for me. The $30 Universal,, between coming from a Hi-Res digital and/or being cut "as is" off the master tape, is even brighter to me. So, despite initial WTH? moments, I'm enjoying this more that I would have imagined at first. P.S. Nice system!!!
Well. Interesting. I wonder if chads listening thru headphones means this so more suited for headphones. I actually think he needs a setup for non-headphones. There is a difference.
Regarding headphones, I think I wondered out loud in my video if Chad uses them but I KNOW he primarily (if not exclusively) listens to speakers sitting at his desk in his office. I do use headphones as part of my evaluation. I will have to ask him :)
@@SafeAndSoundTXAudioExcursion I think he uses headphones a lot. Headphone listening is far different than in room stereo setups. Headphones are very surgical and subject to the whims of how they fit on your ears. Spatial queues are almost totally lost on headphones. It’s all floating in your head. I think if you are making mastering decisions based on headphones there is risk it will not sound good with speakers in a proper 2 channel setup.
@@revelry1969 I agree that the headphone experience is critical to a proper evaluation. Now I need to ask what brand and model he uses :)
@@SafeAndSoundTXAudioExcursion I think doing headphones and proper 2 channel setup is important and probably more than an oligarch audio setup. This is why we have equalizers. The original setup from the studio, Mastering ears, decision maker ears are important. No way to reproduce what he heard without his exact setup. I like the UHQRs in general but it is a bit of a crap shoot that the mastering is pleasing to you. The mofi recent masterings I have to tame the bass on. Either it is my system doing that or the way it was mastered. I think more the latter because many complain the same thing as me. When making decisions on mastering it seems Chad should assure listening in a way that can assure best on majority of systems. Key off the oligarch? Or key of the general masses.

Well there was no remixing done of this. Contractually I think it was an All or Nothing type deal, and we all know Katy Lied has issues. In fairness, he said this master was in great condition and the original.
I heard that about Katy Lied. I did purchase the UHQR, can't buy a thrill which sounds great on my system. I think I will wait for AJA@@SafeAndSoundTXAudioExcursion

Ah, my friend, here we are again. So I'm finally around to listening to PL. Right away, all comments about the highs being cut off are understood. Perhaps the underdog opinion here, but again, a golden pressing. No, not as "wow" as CBAT, but This. Sounds. Right. It truly was mastered very hot, which is part of what makes it the "banger" that it is, but these are very solid levels across the board. I totally understand the "headphone" listening, but on my old stand-by setup with a pair of old Geminis, sounds fantastic. This is a case of an album that our ears are trained to hear in a way that perhaps diminishes what this new mix really is trying to accomplish. I love it. Again, for you folks out there just looking for a solid player copy, the cost may be prohibitive and you might be a tad upset if you expected the same sounds you are familiar with. For the aficionados out there (did I somehow become one???) this is well worth it. I can't wait for the next installment. Chad is an absolute pro.
Thanks for the comments. I think there is a mature mastering decision here that is hard to appreciate in a quick satisfaction world of perceived expectations. I had to mature in my listening to appreciate what was done here. It appears you are in the same camp.
Absolutely. Do you have any particular feelings or insight on the upcoming UHQR Katy Lied release? Odd man out here all but certainly, but I am a huge fan of the album. I've read and heard over the years that there were many issues during the original recording/mastering process, so I'm hopeful Chad's team was able to polish the tracks. Rose Darling, DDLITNYCNM, YGT2, Dr. Wu, and Throw Back the Little Ones in particular are favorites of mine.
Can't believe there are people who still spend 150 bucks on this hypes. Been listening to UHQR Miles Davis out of curiosity. Clear, flat, and detailed but wasn't 5X greater than 30 bucks Blue Note's Tone Poem series at all if not same or equal to.
Nothing will be 5x better unless the original totally sucked! There are those who will pay tens of thousands to go one half second faster 0-60MPH so it’s a matter of what’s relatively important to the consumer.
The sound quality might be the best in comparison all in all it is a disappointing. Not even close to my best sounding recordings. Not worth the money. A waste.
Honestly I would never put PL as having the potential to be a best recording! I certainly get that the expected improvements we often get on a remastering (better top and bottom end prioritized) did not happen here as the midrange, vocals and bottom end really were the priority for improvement. To that end, the UHQR achieved its goal and I’ve gained a better appreciation for the title via the UHQR recording. But I get your perspective 100%. And with Aja being such a stellar upgrade and hard to beat one knows what can be done.
I have zero doubt that the first lacquers sent to Chad were problematic and this sound was a choice made due to alternatives having shortcomings that we will never hear. Chad eluded to that when he told me “you certainly don’t want this thing any brighter”.

I though it was just me. this was my least favorite sounding album of steely dan.

The UK original 1974 to me sounds about as good as it gets. I don't think paying £100+ for one of these new "enhanced" pressings adds very much and probably loses what made it great in the first place. Originals are fro masters that are fresh so close to the original recording. Horses for courses I guess but the original is what I tend to go for.
