Most people would watch these videos for educational reasons, but for me this is sheer entertainment.

Happiness is one of any number of possible values that have wholesome and unwholesome versions. The ultimate good is therefore not happiness, but wholesomeness.

I am extremely fortunate to have a true philosophy class in my high school in McFarland, WI. It is one of two or three schools in Wisconsin that has a licensed teacher that can actually teach philosophy. I am personally studying Jeremy Bentham right now and there hasn't been one basic aspect of his theory that hasn't been covered in this video. You're a great teacher from what i can tell, very laid back which I think is very important especially when teaching a class like philosophy.

watched your vid the morning of my philosophy final, just a refresher but thanks. you seem like a very fluid instructor, which is somewhat lacking in many campuses.

Thanks. Your lecture makes utilitarianism a lot easier to understand than Pojman's "How Should We Live"

@IchEsueberich I think you may have confused this video with another one. There was no reference to any culture with gender equality in this talk on Utilitarian Ethics. As far as written languages go, I believe we have examples going back as far as 3500 B.C. in China, Cuneiform in Sumeria would also have a similar date, along with hieroglyphics in Egypt.

I'd like to say. I have my Religious Studies examination on Wednesday, and trying to cram in revision is exceedingly dull and boring (What Teenager woudn't say that?) but this Video has went beyond the Powerpoints, and the bits of paper. It was a nice way for people to revise, so I will say thank you for putting this up.

..greatest number is a double maxim, maximizing happiness and maximizing the number of happy people are two different agendas. I also think how near a benefit is from occurring is irrelevant if it's relatively certain to occur and whether or not someone is a Christian is besides whether or not they should serve in the military (if serving in the military causes unnecessary pain/loss of happiness, if it promotes anti-utilitarian sentiments or if it's not a decision that could be made by..

Only if the happiness created outweighed the happiness/suffering minimized/increased *and* no other policy could produce a greater ratio of happiness to suffering. The best possible way to maximize happiness in the long run and on a grand scale is to persuade people to feel connected to the happiness and suffering of every other sentient being in the universe, interests would still collide but when they did it wouldn't be the result of sadism or lack of empathy.

The point is: When the majority decides that it's better for whites to be victimized and killed, than for the racial dogmas to be questioned, we sacrifice the lives of white Americans to keep the racial paradigm alive.
So with rule utalitarianism, the ideas and preconceptions of a minority can dictate that people from the majority group should die, for instance. As long as X is considered the better choice, be that a minority or majority, Y is categorically rejected.

Mill was an inconsistent utilitarian (rule utilitarianism is deontology) and an inconsistent hedonist (with his claim of qualitatively higher and lower kinds of pleasure). I don't think utilitarianism should be thought of as a collectivist philosophy. Unlike democracy, utilitarianism does not in principle prioritize the interests of the majority. In some scenarios, the happiness of fewer individuals would outweigh the happiness of a greater number of individuals. The greatest happiness for the..

@lelanddupuy yes I'm a prof, and I'm not certain I know what you mean by volunteerism and the non aggression principle, but they sound good. As far as philosophical anarchism goes, I would imagine everyone would have their own interpretation, by definition. In many ways I believe everyone already is an anarchist, in that we only really keep the rules we want to anyways. You should check out my existential ethics videos, they are probably much more up your alley than Kant. Thanks for the com.

are you a professor? cool lecture. how do you feel about volunteerism, philosophical anarchism, and the non aggression principle? i'm in an existential crisis... if a system doesn't work, why would anyone think that putting in another figurehead will fix it?(presidential race).when has anyone joined the mafia and made it a non profit organization? why would corrupt government be any different? i'm on the very of being an anarchist...

Utilitarianism is not about egalitarianism, TravellerAdventures. It's about the greater good.

    • @genesisingold9604

I thought it was about greater happiness.

    • @YukonBloamie

Typically, the word used is "wellbeing", because not everything that makes a person happy is good for their "wellbeing". Aristotle used the word Eudaimonia which means "flourishing". Where in Utilitarianism the flourishing is focused on the group as a whole primarily, and the individual after.

Can utilitarianism be applied to things like racism or genocide? For example, is it a valid argument to say that Jim Crow laws agreed with Utilitarian philosophy because the majority of people at that time wanted to suppress a minority, and this is what they (the majority) perceived as "good".

You refered to a culture of gender equality that lasted for a very long time about 1200 b.c. What is the evidence for that culture if I guess there where no written language? Autors Links , Paper (Journal Articles) could be helpful ...
