In a saltwater pool, the process that turns salt into chlorine to disinfect the water is called electrolysis. Here’s how it works in simple terms:
Salt Addition: First, salt (sodium chloride) is added to the pool water.
Electrolysis Through the Cell: The pool water, now containing dissolved salt, passes through a device called a salt chlorine generator. This device has an electrolytic cell.
Chlorine Production: As the saltwater flows through this cell, it undergoes electrolysis. The electrical current in the cell breaks down the salt (sodium chloride) into its components: sodium and chloride. The chloride part combines with the water (H2O) to form hypochlorous acid and hydrogen gas. Hypochlorous acid is the active form of chlorine that disinfects the pool water.
Disinfection: The hypochlorous acid works to kill bacteria, algae, and other pathogens in the pool, keeping the water clean and safe for swimming.
Reconversion: The chlorine eventually combines with other chemicals in the water, turning back into salt and other byproducts, which allows the cycle to continue.
This system is effective for keeping pool water clean and reduces the need for added chemical chlorine, making the water feel softer and more pleasant for swimmers.
